Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments How funny - I just realized something. When you look at your books in List View, it sorts properly but usually with the wrong rating.
However, it appears that looking at your books in Main View - even though the sorting is wonky- all of the books are listed with their correct ratings. And even though the sorting is not exact, it does tend to group similar ratings together (lows on one end and highs on the other), so it's much easier to find applicable books from my TBR that way.

So far I've found*:

Amsterdam - Ian McEwan
On Chesil Beach - Ian McEwan
The Sea - John Banville
The Pilgrim's Progress - John Bunyan
Saturday - Ian McEwan
The Story of Lucy Gault - William Trevor
July's People - Nadine Gordimer
On Beauty - Zadie Smith
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot
Unwind - Neal Shusterman
East of Eden - John Steinbeck
The Ghost Writer - John Harwood
The Stone Gods - Jeanette Winterson
Seeing - Jose Saramago
Breathing Lessons - Anne Tyler
The Road to Wellville - T.C. Boyle
The Law of Similars - Chris Bohjalian
The Bright Side of Disaster: A Novel - Katherine Center
Rabbit, Run - John Updike
Juliet, Naked - Nick Hornby
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress - Dai Sijie
A Separate Peace - John Knowles
Songbook - Nick Hornby
A Thousand Acres: A Novel - Jane Smiley
The Double Bind - Chris Bohjalian
Baudolino - Umberto Eco
Man and Boy: A Novel - Tony Parsons
Thank You for All Things - Sandra Kring
Lost & Found - Jacqueline Sheehan
You Remind Me of Me - Dan Chaon
The Most Wanted - Jacquelyn Mitchard
Bee Season - Myla Goldberg
The Moment Between - Nicole Baart
How to Be Lost: A Novel - Amanda Eyre Ward
Promise Not to Tell: A Novel - Jennifer McMahon
Summerland - Michael Chabon
The Lace Reader - Brunonia Barry
Light on Snow - Anita Shreve
A Son of the Circus - My other husband John Irving
Diary - Chuck Palahniuk
Specimen Days - Michael Cunningham
The Island of the Day Before - Umberto Eco
Look at Me: A Novel - Jennifer Egan
Haunted - Chuck Palahniuk
The Unnamed - Joshua Ferris
Death of an Ordinary Man - Glen Duncan
A Good and Happy Child: A Novel - Justin Evans

Diane | 741 comments For clarification, do the scores need to be only 3.45, 3.54, 4.35, and 4.53 or are scores using only two of the numbers (i.e. 3.44 or 3.53) acceptable?

(The examples I have posted so far have used all three numbers, so they are/were definitely within criteria at the time posted).

Oh no, I didn't even realize this might be the case. :o( I'll edit my post if so.

Cool! I totally missed that. Well that opens up a whole lot of new possibilities!

message 57: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments So 3.33 or 4.44 would also be fine?

Thanks for the adjustments, Cynthia! I also like the idea of "locking in" by reading a chapter or whatever now! I am a fan of knowing ALL of my books ahead of time. Except for the reading in bed one. I am leaving that one open to where the moment takes me!

Thank you for finding Specimen Days! It's on my TBR! I may go read a few pages right now to lock it in!!!!!

message 59: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments Oh gosh. I just noticed something that might help people if clarified. Every book has 2 ratings: one for the specific edition you own and one that is an average rating for all editions. Which one do you want us to go by?

Thanks!

Use the average rating for all editions.

You can use it for 5.5; it is on the popular list for 1974!

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Okay, so.... Which page is going to show the average rating for ALL editions? Our TBR list? Searching for the book? ??

message 65: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments Sara wrote: "Okay, so.... Which page is going to show the average rating for ALL editions? Our TBR list? Searching for the book? ??"

Yes

message 66: by Sara (last edited Feb 23, 2010 07:11PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Errr.... that wasn't a yes/no question? Was that a BOTH for TBR/searching for a book?

message 67: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments If you go to a books page and look where it says book data - click on more data - it will break the ratings down into the overall average and average for that edition - you want the overall average.

message 68: by Sara (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Ah, I see. THANK YOU!!

message 69: by Petra (new)

Petra Cynthia, I picked up The Russian Concubine from the library today and read the first chapter. It's rating, at the moment, is 3.54.
Just locking it in for the Challenge.

Thanks!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 306 comments AH! I'm so excited. Just read the first page of Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress for this because right now it is at 3.55!!

message 71: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) I also got Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3) by J.K. Rowling Spinners by Donna Jo Napoli Mr. Commitment by Mike Gayle The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Wicked Years, #1) by Gregory Maguire More Minds by Carol Matas

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Jamie, Balzac is a charming little book. Hope you enjoy it!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3028 comments kaion, I read The Memory Keeper's Daughter and it didn't like it as much as the movie. I only gave it 3 stars.

message 74: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) You're terribly generous, I only gave it 2.

Bonnie | 110 comments For those who love YA, Ally Carter (from the Gallagher Girl Series) has a new book called Heist Society that has a 4.43 rating.

I am planning on reading that for a book published in 2010. I started it and it was pretty good!

Matthew | 89 comments Does the overall book need to have this rating, or just our edition? For example I read the Green Mile, and my Mass Market Edition has a 3.44 rating. But The Book itself has a 3.25 rating. Will This work?

It's the overall rating.

message 81: by Juli (new)

Juli (julifabulous) | 61 comments I'm going to read Late Nights on Air from my TBR list. Rating 3.45 as of today.

message 82: by Petra (new)

Petra Cynthia, I'm changing my choice for this task. At the moment, I just can't seem to get into The Russian Concubine.
I started reading Haunted this morning. It has an average Rating of 3.34 right now. I think I'd rather read this book for this task.
Thanks!

message 83: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments ok, this task is *killing* me. I had a book that was perfect. By the time the library got it in, it had fallen below the required numbers. So I used it for something else. Now I am waiting because the book two after it in the series is at 4.32. I need one or two more people to give it a 5 star rating and I'm good to go. Ack!

Clearly, I have no life, as I stalk this book and its ratings. . .

message 84: by Sara (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments All the books I have on my TBR rated with 3s, 4s, and 5s are either not out or ones that I really need to take off my TBR because I don't really want to read them... ;) I think I'll wait a while and check back...

Leslie (leslie_nj) | 70 comments Hi. I found a book that is a 4.40 rating. To be annoyingly technical, since this is really 4.4, would this work or does the rating have to have three decimal spots?

Thanks....

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3028 comments I am still confused on this. For the rating system has has to be at least two of the three numbers like 3.41, or 4.37 as long as two of the numbers are in there? Does it have to be in order like 3.4 or 4.5 ? I am really confused.

Only the numbers 3,4,5 can appear in the rating, but it's OK if a number is repeated like 3.34 or 4.55. But no other numbers can appear.

message 89: by Jayme(theghostreader) (last edited Mar 14, 2010 01:40PM) (new)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3028 comments so if it is something like 4.04 it doesn't work?

Okay, I think I found a book off my tbr list: Witch and Wizard by James Patterson has a rating of 3.34

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3028 comments Devil Wears Prada has a rating of 3.43

message 91: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 138 comments Jayme wrote: "Devil Wears Prada has a rating of 3.43"

You've got it. Either of those would work.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3028 comments as long as the rating doesn't change

message 93: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments Jayme- just read one page so that you can lock the rating in. You don't have to finish it, but as long as you started it while it was at that rating, the rating is locked in.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3028 comments I don't have those on me atm

Since the ratings are 3 numbers it should be all 3 numbers.

Thanks for the response Cynthia. I will just put the book somewhere else.
