Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Thanks Kara. That was quick. Did I give adequate info? because I have more additions.

message 454: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) Yes, the ISBN was very helpful--it allows us to get the right edition directly from worldcat.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments I was wondering if you would add a cover to Stone Cold large print edition. The GR listing also doesn't state that it is Large Print could you edit that as well?

Good luck finding yours.

I suppose the edition you wanted changed is the one belonging to the given ISBN (as opposed to that that you linked to)?

Then you should have your cover now: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60...

message 461: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Wow, that was speedy. Is there anyway that I can do this myself and save you time?

message 462: by Isabell (new)

Isabell (purzel) | 246 comments While all users can add new book editions (although not combine them), only librarians can edit existing entries.

However, you could become a librarian yourself (as far as I know the only requirement is to have 50 books on your GR shelves, but that isn't really an obstacle, is it? ;)

Here's the link to the librarian manual, which also provides a link to the "application form": http://www.goodreads.com/help/librari... (direct link to application: http://www.goodreads.com/about/apply_...)

I always prefer to edit wrong or missing data myself, when I stumble across it instead of having to bother someone else and waiting until it is fixed. And it gives you instant pleasure for having done a good deed for the day (and making GR better does count as good deed in this sense). And it helps in procrastinating when I should actually be studying some more public law (as I should now, so I'll better stop my rambling now and get to the studying part that inevitable comes after the procrastination).

message 463: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Thanks Isabell maybe I'll do that. I believe I have over 50 books on my shelves. More like 2,000

We can't use information directly from Amazon - but if you own or have borrowed the book from the library or a friend and can confirm that it's 240, it'll be good enough for me. :)

Mine has fewer pages and is an Ace/Putnam Edition. Also there is no ISBN. I did not add a cover as it should be the same as the others; but in case, it is needed:

If information is supplied directly from a reader it's safe to assume they have a physical copy of the book and that's a reasonable source. We only worry about bad sources when users direct us to sites like Amazon/B&N for the information.

I combined the newly created edition with the others and added the cover (covers are not added to new editions when combining, so when you have one at hand you can always add that to the edition you create, but it's no great matter to add it afterward, either).

In case you need it, here is the link to your edition: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14...

message 474: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments OK thanks Vicky and Isabell. The librarian thing is a bit intimidating to me. I mainly requested to become a librarian so I wouldn't have to keep bugging you guys but I would love to become confident enough to help others as well. I haven't finished reading the manual yet though. Been too busy working on my "plan". Actually I am working on Isabell's task right now.

message 475: by Isabell (new)

Isabell (purzel) | 246 comments Added the covers of messages 471 and 472.

Sheila, that's why I'am a librarian as well and mostly I just correct the database entries for the books I own/get from the library. Sometimes I clean up other records that cross my way when I notice something that should be corrected. I've gone through the manual step-by-step whenever I needed some more information.

The new plan keeps me busy as well (I should be working for my studies, but it's always so much more fun to try and find books for the different tasks). I hope you find something you like for the task (and for the rest of the tasks as well).

message 476: by Bea (new)

Bea Thanks, everyone. One of these days, I hope to be a librarian also...but now too busy with working and reading. So I appreciate the help.

message 477: by Bea (new)

Bea Just went out to the link and noticed that my edition - like all the others - is labeled as series "Pegasus/The Tower and the Hive #4". Everything I found said that The Rowan is book #1 of The Tower and the Hive, which is how I entered it. Is the GR series label correct?

My copy is too old to show any series at all.

message 478: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 240 comments I got all the page numbers from post #473 and I'm working on the Ann McCafferty series. It looks all the books from the Pegasus and The Tower and the Hive series are part of the greater series "The Talents Universe" so I'm going to split them into their sub-series and get them situated. :)

message 479: by Bea (new)

Bea Thanks, Vicky. I sure seem to have given a lot of librarians a workout today. I really do appreciate the help.

I've added the page numbers of the last book (the page number was confirmed by WorldCat).

However, the first three paperback editions are a bit more problematic. We are not supposed to use amazon as a data source (see this post by rivka in the librarian group regarding requests to add books to the database: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...), so I'd need another source (author's website perhaps?).

It's always a valid data source if you have the book in hand and provide the information you get directly from your copy.

Thank you. I have those three in ebook format and thought I should get the paper version entered so I didn't need to get them verified for length. They were all published by either Amazon Digital Services or Createspace (which is also Amazon) and either the author's don't have a website or it just links the book back to Amazon. I found 2 others that will work instead of Done Being Friends and Finding Kate Huntley but I need to keep working on Midnight Sun since it is a recommendation from a friend for a challenge.

I found this info on isbndb dot com.

Does that work?

I've added both the paperback edition to Finding Kate Huntley (they had data on that on isbndb as well) and Midnight Sun to the database and combined them with the existing entries.

Unfortunately I still couldn't find anything for Done Being Friends.

message 492: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Hi Isabell,

Since I am new to this librarian thing I am "stalking" you and Vicky. When you added Midnight Sun did you just copy the write up about the story from another edition or did you add it anew from what showed on the isbn site? Was the reason you didn't add the cover on the left there because it was a link to Amazon?

I tried entering the isbn # in world cat and nothing showed up, why is that?

message 493: by Isabell (new)

Isabell (purzel) | 246 comments I've got myself my first stalker, yeah.

I added the description from isbndb, but that isn't strictly necessary. When you have a description for one edition that is set as default description (there is a checkbox under the large field to enter the description that lets you select your current edition's as new default description), that is usually used for all editions that don't have a description of their own (so as long as there is one edition with description, it's not too important to add one to the newly created editions).

Yes, that's exactly the reason I didn't add the cover, because isbndb only links to amazon and we are not supposed to use amazon data (or any other bookseller), so it's better to leave the cover empty for now until someone with a scan or another valid source provides it. If we really needed a cover I suppose we could add it from one of the other versions as they are all the same, but I'd only do that if I was really certain that the covers match and it was really needed/asked for.

I tried entering the isbn in worldcat as well (actually, that was my first effort to find another source for Deanna's books) without success. I suppose that worldcat doesn't have the CreateSpace books listed, but that's just my guess. It just shows that worldcat doesn't have everything (I sometimes come across editions that are not listed there, but usually it's a good source to find missing page numbers or even the original titles for translations).

Bless you! You are great. I bookmarked the isbndb site so I can check there for any future books I find that need tweaking. I end up with lots of free ebooks from POI and ENT that are self published and it is hard to find info anywhere but Amazon. Thank you for all that you do.
