Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4194 comments Would some kind person with librarian status add page numbers to this book One Clean Shot: Rookie Club Book 2 ?
I have a copy in my hand and excluding author's notes etc. it has 354 pages. I need it for a task that requires a total of 600 pages for two books. The other one I am using has 291 pages, so I need this 300+ book to satisfy the requirements.
Thanks,
Andy

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4418 comments This is the first edition of To Kill a Mockingbird.

It was published on July 11, 1960

Can the correct date be entered in the record ... right now it's got the "default" Jan 1 month/day.

Thank you in advance.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4418 comments Can the title of this book be fixed.

I searched by the ISBN of the book I had in my hand: 9780008255473

And I get: ADVENTURE OF CHRISTMA_POIRO PB Clearly mistitled!

Correct title is: The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding

(I could swear that when I chose it the title was correct ... GR has been so glitchy lately, especially with older books.)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4418 comments By the way ... can you, as librarian, tell who changed the title to that weird wrong thing?

Lately I've been noticing lots of titles similar to this. ALL CAPS, including the author name and/or pub date ... all as part of the title. Don't know if it's a glitch of some sort of data merge or if it's a specific person who doesn't know what they are doing.

I looked at the changelog (which records changes made by GR librarians) and I couldn't spot a manual change to all caps, but there are so many editions of that book and lots of changes.

From my experience, weird titles are usually the result of data importing - for instance I've seen a lot of GR titles recently that include stuff like "as seen on BookTube" or "TikTok made me buy it" because sites like Amazon have been adding those lines to the titles on their website to make them stand out, and that gets imported across to GR. I reckon the all caps thing might be similar.

Most books added to GR are from a data import rather than individual librarians; GR librarians mostly just edit books that have already been created. The exception is very small publishers and self-published books that aren't on Amazon.

I agree with Aimee; I believe most of those screwy ones showing up are data dumps to GR. It seems that these sloppy and incomplete records have been showing up approximately since they went to the "new" GR look. Maybe some settings at the admin end were changed with all that. I'm pretty sure that many are duplicates of items already in the system.

What bothers me most are all of the records that say the author, format, and/or dates in the title line AND YET the author is listed as "Unknown author". Somewhere in the dump process, the fields haven't been parsed.

Could someone please add details to this edition of A Perfect Spy? Missing ISBN (9780340393130 and 0340393130) and page count (607), also needs capitalisation fixing in the title.

Also, I'm not sure why this version of The Burning Land is listed as a separate book entirely to The Burning Land rather than a different edition, but if someone could investigate that'd be appreciated.

Thank you!

Burning Land is now combined.

A perfect spy is somewhat problematic. The ISBNs are either used for other copies and formats or have been placed in the ASIN because of duplications. Also, the covers of each version seems to be different according the GR records. There are several different covers attached to either those numbers or Coronet.
Some Coronet versions have no numbers or other identifying info. Your pagination is ok for all I can see, so I can add that.

What format is the one you have? I find some of the above listed as paperback, mass market pb, kindle, and unknown binding. Library standards would consider a mass market pb about 18 cm (this is what I found in WorldCat), paperbacks (or trade paperbacks) are usually about 20-21 cm. Which cover matches the one you listed; the link you sent?

I can see what changes I can make when I have more info. Oh, also, what's the most recent date listed on the title page or the verso (back) of the title page? That would help. The capitalization issue can be fixed, if you want. GR rules are different from what library standards were when this would have been originally cataloged in WorldCat. WorldCat lists as shown in GR.

Yeah, I did wonder if that might be a thorny one. The copy I have is a Coronet MMPB, it comes in just under 18cm. It's dated 1992, the cover matches the link I sent in the original message.

Hope that helps a little!

Julia (julia103) | 2619 comments Can someone please combine
The Man of Dangerous Secrets and
The Man of Dangerous Secrets

They have the same cover which says "Margery Allingham writing as Maxwell March".

Thanks!

message 3673: by Julia (new)

Julia (julia103) | 2619 comments And another one to combine:

Black'erchief Dick
Black'erchief Dick 1923 Leather Bound
Black'erchief Dick

The third one is messed up - it looks as though the author's name was smashed together with the person who wrote an introduction. It might be the same edition as Black'erchief Dick 1st US Edition (same publication year, same publisher), in which case it could be deleted instead of combined.
Blackkerchief Dick lists the introduction author but has a different publisher.

I'm checking the WorldCat records and there may be an issue with how each country catalogs. Please answer the following questions so that I can try to resolve this...
1) is 436 the last printed page, or is there a blank page, etc. that actually has 437 printed?
2) is this a trade paperback (about 20-22 cm tall), as opposed to a mass market pb (about 17-19 cm tall)
3) is the publisher actually "Pan" or "Picador" (or are both found? which is on the title page and which on the reverse of the title page, if so)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4418 comments What is with all the wonky titles lately? Is this some sort of bot import?

The Little Italian Hotel: Give your heart a holiday with the most charming, uplifting novel of summer 2023 from bestseller Phaedra Patrick

Thank you in advance.

I've noticed this issue recently myself too:

A Loyal Character Dancer Paperback Qiu Xiaolong (author) (the blurb on this is also nonsensical)
When Red is Black: Inspector Chen 3

They also have additional greyscale information when viewed from "My Books" that shouldn't be there - it looks like a messed up series listing.

Screenshot of the problem here: (I'm not sure why Imgur thinks it's NSFW, it's not)

If someone could fix that, it'd be appreciated. Thanks very much!

It appears to me that these non-subtitle "subtitles" are added to Amazon records. I'm not sure it's by Amazon, the publisher, the author, or a seller; but, it happens frequently.
