Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I posted this in the summer reading goals post and there seemed to be enough interest in making this a game so I decided to re-post it here. I changed some of the rules as well.

Basically how it works is there are different tasks that are worth between 5 and 25 points...you can set goals for yourself as to how how many points you want to earn each month or by the end of the summer (i.e. end of the day August 31st). To make it more fun you can reward yourself for earning a certain number points...or just do it for the pure joy of reading...I'll leave it up to you.

5 Point Items
- Read a book you borrow from the library
- Read for 30 minutes under a tree
- Listen to a book on tape, cd, mp3, or playaway
- Read a cookbook or view a cooking website***
- Free Space (only use if necessary)
- Read a romance novel
- Attend a program at your local library
- View a movie made from a book

***prepare an item from that cookbook and share it with someone - 10 points

10 Point Items
- Read a collection of short stories or a play
- Read a online newspaper or magazine
- Read an inspirational novel or non-fiction book
- Read a book about sports or the outdoors
- Read a sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal novel
- Read a horror or suspense novel
- Read a magazine from your local library
- Read a western, a novel set in the west, a
history about the west

15 Point Items
- Read a novel by an author you have never read
- Read a book about politics or history
- Read a book published in the decade you were
born
- Read an autobiography
- Read a book from "Times all-time 100 novels"
- Read a book with "coffee" or "tea" in the
title...the main library in the county just
added a coffee bar area so hence this challenge
- Browse three book related websites (good-reads
doesn't count..lol)
- Listen to or read any non-fiction book

25 Point Items
- Read a book about your town or written by a
local author
- Listen to a child read 30 min. on 3 different
days
- Attend a live book club meeting

Rules
- Each task will only count once (unless you finish all the tasks before the end of the summer then you can start over if you want).

- Each item read, viewed, or heard may be counted only once (so you can't use the same book to fulfill two challenges)

If everyone have fun with this maybe we can do another challenge for Fall/Winter/Spring etc.

If you want to play you can post your progress here. What tasks you're doing and what books you read etc.

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Another question, when you mean a local author, do you mean someone who is living there or who was born there? (Because if it just meant living there, I have the chance to reread an awesome book hehe...)

message 3: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Either or I think...it could be someone who was born in the town or surrounding area that you live in or someone who lives there now.

message 4: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments okay, that works! Hello 25 points!

message 5: by Cynthia (last edited Jul 20, 2008 04:20PM) (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I planned out what things I'm going to do to earn my 100 points (since I'm actually playing for real prizes...last year I got a $25 dollar gift card to Barnes & Noble)...I thought it best to plan ahead of time. I will edit this post as I complete the tasks.

5 Point Tasks
* READ FOR 30 MINUTES UNDER A TREE - I read The Sugar Queen for probably closer to an hour yesterday...it was a beautiful day here in Virginia.

* READ A COOKBOOK OR VIEW A COOKING WEBSITE - So I perused a few cookbooks but decide to look at Food Network.com...I found a recipe that I plan to make to take in to share with my co-workers for Bread Pudding. It's a Paula Deen recipe.

* READ A ROMANCE NOVEL - Just finished THE DEWEY DECIMAL SYSTEM OF LOVE by JOSEPHINE CARR - nice short chick lit romance book...made interesting because it centered around a librarian and libraries.

* VIEW A MOVIE FROM A NOVEL - I saw The Water Horse whih is based on a book by Dick King-Smith. It was a cute movie...it took me awhile to get into it but it was goodd overall.

10 Point Tasks
* READ A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES - I read Werewolves In Their Youth for this challenge...I liked some of these stories in the collection and others not so much.

*READ A WESTERN, A NOVEL SET IN THE WEST, A HISTORY ABOUT THE WEST - I read Walking West by Noelle Sickels last night...it was good but left me with unanswered questions. A lot was left up in the air at the end.

15 Point Tasks
* READ A NOVEL BY AN AUTHOR YOU HAVE NEVER READ - For this task I could have picked a thousand different books but I chose to read Manless in Montclair by Amy Holman Edelman....really enjoyed the book, it was a quick read at only 244 pages but it didn't leave me unsatisfied...some short books come up short (lol)...the endings leave you wondering what happens next, this book like the last book I read (teahouse) brought everything together nicely.

* READ A BOOK PUBLISHED IN THE DECADE YOU WERE
BORN - I read the Velvet Promise by Jude Deveraux published initially in 1981 the year before I was born...it was a good historical romance...I really like her style.

* READ A BOOK WITH “COFFEE OR “TEA IN THE TITLE - For this task I read THE TEA HOUSE ON MULBERRY STREET by SHARON OWENS...wonderful book, a lot of characters to keep track of, but a great story with a great ending.

* LISTEN TO OR READ ANY NON-FICTION BOOK - I just finished Becoming Jane Austen by Jon Spence...a biography of Jane Austen...it was too factual for me it took longer to get through it that it should have...the way it was written it was very text-bookish.

TOTAL POINTS EARNED = 100

message 6: by Stacie (new)

Stacie OK.I have another question too regarding the local author...I live in Petaluma. So, does my author have to have been from Petaluma or does the Bay Area count?

message 7: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Surrounding area is fine.

message 8: by Kathy McC (new)

Kathy McC Cynthia- Just printed off the list. What a great idea. I'm pretty sure I will not read the horror novel or the western, but I'll try to step outside the box. I'm anxious to get started.

For the record, the librarians at my public library take very good care of me, so I think I will make the recipe that I read for them. Thanks for that suggestion.

message 10: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Lori, I love that you are just as incapable of borrowing a book from a library as I am. It's just a sheer impossibility for me- which is sad because I work with tons of libraries.

message 11: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10553 comments Mod
Logan, I dont even know if i still have a library card.. i havent been inside of one for years.... I would rather own the book, than borrow it. And i dont see any point in borrowing it, reading it, liking, AND THEN running out and buying it... So i save myself the hassel and buy it from the getgo...haa haa.

Dont get me wrong, I dont dislike them, I just dont go in them :)

message 12: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I only buy books that I completely love, otherwise, I get them at the library. Or if it is a sequel to a book I love.

message 13: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I rarely reread books that's why working in a library and using one primarily is good for me. I don't see the point in paying for a book that is just going to sit on a shelf not being read. I'd rather save the money and buy the books the library doesn't have.

For those non-library users I'll adjust it to say...if your library has a book sale area (a lot of them do) and you buy a book from the sale and read it it will count for those 5 points.

message 14: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Good to know!

message 15: by Kathy McC (new)

Kathy McC Logan and Lori- I can't imagine not going into a library. I have cards for four different libraries and one of those cards gets me access to over a hundred libraries here in Michigan. I have run out of room in my house for books and I know that using the library supports it for those people who can't afford to go to book stores and for children's programs.
But, I also love book stores!

message 16: by Stacie (new)

Stacie Two things to share...one, I am with Logan and Lori and LOVE owning my books. There is something about having them all around me. I do, however, get books from the library quite a lot and feel fortunate that I am CSU student and have access to pretty much every library in the state of CA. I usually get books from the library that we are reading for my book club if I didn't vote for it or don't really think I am going to like.

My other thing is about a website I found that will come in handy for our summer challenge.

I found this great website while I was looking for books in the decade I was born and it literally lists the "best" books of fiction and non-fiction for each of the years. The glitch that I can't seem to get passed is that I can't simply go to caderbooks.com and find a link. I had to do a search for "the best books of the 1970's" and clicked on the link provided.

however, I did find that you could simply replace the number and it brought you to that year.

It is kind of neat to see what was "hot" in the literary world when I was born; although it was really nothing that I would read!

message 17: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I love owning them and reading them on my time rather than having to worry about a deadline.I find the selection is not that great and for anything current there's waiting lists that seem to go on forever.I just don't have the patience.

message 18: by Kathy McC (new)

Kathy McC I love owning books too. Problem is my house is over run by books and the clutter annoys me to distraction at times. Fortunately, my "To Read" list is so long that I can always find multiple books at the library that I want to read. Generally, I have so many library books at one time that I can't get to them all. I have former debaters who have promised me that when they have lots of money they are going to add a library to my house for me- then I will buy books to my heart's content. :o)

message 19: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I love to own books, and will always try to buy them rather than borrow from the library. Sometimes though, I just can't afford it, and so I go to the library, and end up picking up 7 or 8 books that I wouldn't necessarily have bought, aswell as the one that I originally went for. I think that the library is great for that. Sometimes in stores, I look at a book and think no - not worth my money. When I'm in a the library I get it anyway, because if I don't like it, then I haven't lost anything except for the time it took me to read it.

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments Thanks Stacie! The link helped me find a fun book to use for that same piece of the summer challenge!!

message 21: by Katie (new)

Katie (hockeygoddess) | 257 comments And I totally wish I was born a year earlier because I own four of the fiction books on that list and one of the nonfiction books must be fabulous:)
