Karina | 401 comments Just finished reading Age of Innocence. Did anyone else find it depressing?

message 7561: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Silk. My short review is as short as the book.

message 7562: by Geoff (new)

Geoff A Visit From the Goon Squad -- I liked the powerpoint chapter. Very few books virtually require a second reading, but this is one of them. With so many characters and interlocking plotlines a second reading might be necessary to piece it all together. However, it is still powerful and the emotional impact of the book remains the same.

Glorianne | 33 comments Casino Royale

Found it ridiculously sexist, even for Bond. Review here:

Recently read Age of Innocence myself. I agree with your assessment. Pretty typical of Edith Wharton's writing about realities of New York society.

One of my favourite authors, wish there were more, but if you don't enjoy his writing move on to another writer who appeals to you. There is enough variety on the list to satisfy most readers. Loved life & Times of Michael K.

Thank you so much for telling me how to read and letting me know that there are other authors on the list I might enjoy more. I did not realize that. As for Coetzee, I find him a very dry and humorless writer (so far). And also a writer who does not trust his reader: let me reiterate my point again since the reader is not as smart as I am (see parts 2 and 3 of Michael K).

message 7571: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments James, I just re-read my message and really can't blame you for being put out by it. It didn't come out at all as I meant it but instead rather snarky. My apologies.

message 7572: by Ian (new)

Ian | 143 comments Just finished "The Sound and the Fury", a stylistic tour-de-force, a book that really needs to be studied to appreciate it fully.

James (jamesg1955) | 23 comments To Mikela from James

And I apologize for over reacting. I was in a cranky mood. I read and read and love being in contact with other people who love books. And I have 5 more Coetzees in my book pile. I might convert yet.

message 7581: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments Just recently finished The Double by Jose Saramago (it took me nearly three weeks and two trips to the Blue Mountains!) - was a long and tedious read with some funny bits here and there but the last 50 pages blew me away! Double crossing cowards and fake beards!

Onto something more my normal style (I hope) with How Late It Was. Also finished Madame Bovary. That poor little girl :(

message 7582: by Liz M (new)

Liz M How Late It Was, How Late shouldn't be anyone's normal style (I loved it, but it is... unique)

I am weird like that :)

Anything with dysfunctional families, trauma or thick accents is always a plus with me!

Aileen | 154 comments The Hound of the Baskervilles. Nice short one to tick off the list.

message 7588: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I just finished White Teeth by Zadie Smith. It was pretty enjoyable. Not a perfect novel, but I grew to care for the characters and found myself thinking about the issues it raised quite a bit. 'Can't say fairer than that.'

message 7589: by Kari (new)

Kari Eggerling | 11 comments I finally finished Les Miserables. I'm glad it's over.

message 7590: by Heather (new)

Heather | 10 comments I just finished reading Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. Good, not great. I found it a little confusing, but I made it through and am happy to check another one off my list.

I just finished this one as well. Really liked it!

message 7592: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 90 comments Just finished City of God by E. L. Doctorow. Found it mildly humorous. Enjoyed the plot but a little difficult to keep track of.

message 7593: by Kai (new)

Kai Coates (southernbohemian) | 42 comments I finished The Human Stain by Philip Roth today. I liked it more than the only other Roth book I've read (Portnoy's Complaint). His writing, for me, is easy to appreciate for its literary qualities (good characters, interesting story that has something to say about our society, etc.), but lacks that spark which makes me love a book. However, there are 5 more Roth books on the list, so maybe I'll grow to love him.
