Ellen | 7 comments Catch-22. Hilarity at its finest!

message 7903: by Stephanie "Jedigal" (new)

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments Orwell's Burmese Days. Had previously only read his ever-assigned-in-school Animal Farm and 1984. Didn't have any expectations, but still was pleasantly 'surprised'. I now expect to enjoy his other two list entries.

Just finished The Castle of Otranto. Definitely not the best book on this list.

message 7905: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Just finished Life of a Good-for-nothing. Really good for a novel from the Romanticism which is not my favourite literary epoch.

message 7909: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Just finished A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.

message 7910: by Stephanie "Jedigal" (new)

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments Tim O'Brien The Things They Carried
Dickens A Tale of Two Cities
both excellent!

message 7911: by Jonpaul (new)

Jonpaul "Things: A Story of the Sixties" by Georges Perec. It could almost as easily have been written today. Terrific and uncomfortable reading.

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway.
Meh. Fast easy read, didn't 'float my boat' (groan, I know :o) but I can wee what critics found to like. Still, I say ***.

message 7916: by Jonpaul (new)

Jonpaul "A Man Asleep" by Georges Perec. A short read about depression and isolation. It goes well with cake and cigarettes.

message 7917: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 154 comments I just finished This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen. It was incredibly disturbing. My attempt at a review can be found here.

Finished The Turn of the Screw. It was quite scary as I'd hoped it to be.

message 7919: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 2 comments I know this is not the topic, but I just read that author Tom Clancy has died. He was 66. He was a great writer.

Charity (charityross) This thread is acting wonky and is now shut down. Please feel free to keep the posting going on this shiny, new thread (of the same name). :)
