My friends think I am nuts because I have read the last 200 books that I have read using an ebook reader on my Blackberry Curve. There are a plethora of ways to read books now, how do you read the bulk of what you read?

I still read mostly the old fashioned way...hardcovers and paperbacks.
I have been doing audio versions more though. Audio is a great way to sneak in another book or two while I am at work.

At least 90% of my reading is of printed-and-bound books. I have quite a few e-books on my netbook, and I use Kindle For PC to read those. I very rarely listen to audiobooks, although I used to do so more often. I don't dislike them; I just don't have much use for them right now.

I would say I read about 85% of my books in original paper back and Hard Cover, there's just something special about smelling the book and turning the pages (I know I'm weired)

I do love my Kindle thoug and read about 10% currently on as well as a good 5% on my iphone throug apps such as Stanza, goodreads, :0)
My goal is to switch over time to more Kindle reading as it's so light weight and easy to read on.

I'd say about 80% real books, 19% ebooks and 1% audio. While I love my ereader I can't see me ever giving up real books.

Pretty much all of the books I read are the good ol' fashioned paper or hard backs. I have read a few e-books but this tends to be because they only come as e-books and not for any other reason (and these I had to read on my PC as PDF as I don't have an e-reader of any description). I'm not sure about the e-readers, I like to feel the pages of the book I'm reading so I'm not totally convinced by them, especially at their current prices

i read paper and hard cover......but i have tried one on my pda, and enjoyed it, haven't finished it tho, and it has been a few yrs. lol, about "organizing".

i had a bone marrow transplant last yr, and i could have used a kindle then, i was unable to concentrate on books, and could not get to a library for audio books.

i am curious about the kindle, but i am afraid of what will happen to books........it would be nice to read in bed while my hon was sleeping and not have to fiddle with book lites and flashlites.......lol

Traditional print books for me most of the time. When I am knitting I listen to audio books. I have really enjoyed the Playaways because they are so tiny. I am reading one book online, but I don't enjoy reading it from a laptop.

I am being tempted by the Kindle and Nook, but I really don't purchase most of what I read, so I am hesitant to switch to something that I can't use for library books. If the library gets in on it, I might reconsider.

I always read print books. Audio books either put me to sleep -- not good when driving! -- or else I just space out and daydream through them. I just can't keep concentrated on the story. And I think of e-readers (sorry everyone) as reading little plastic boxes...ugh from me on those. There is just something about a real book that triumphs over the substitutes.

I read almost exclusively paper. I've tried to cut down on buying books for myself, and use books from the library almost exclusively now. Even the last of the "Girl Who ..." and "Mockingjay" series, so that gives an idea how serious I am about trimming that line item in my budget. :) Don't own a Blackberry or a Kindle, and can't see why I'd want to read sitting in front of a computer screen when I could be curled up in bed or in front of the fireplace. And I don't have much patience for sitting still to listen, except on long car rides. I do envy the portability of having multiple books to read in one tiny little place, especially when traveling, but it's not for me until the readers are much cheaper and the books are library-available.

i am a paperback girl. I read outside when its nice or in my fave chair in my room.

i did not know there were free books to download from gr, i saw some at amazon......is a sony ereader easy to see when outside.....cuz like mary i enjoy reading outdoors.....

I am not a big e-reader either. I just like holding a book in my hands

i downloaded some pdf books from the library today, and it will take me awhile to get used to it, but so far, i prefer books.....i find it hard to follow the lines when reading electronically.........when u have to move to the next line, my eyes seem to hiccup.....hmmm

I am still a fan of having my old fashioned book in my hand while I read but lately I have been getting more into ebooks because of the convenience of them. I have listened to a couple audio books but I find that I can get distracted by other things when I am not doing the reading with my eyes.

I like to have several books going at once - a nice big hardback from the library, a lighter paperback to carry around in my purse, an audiobook on my iPod to listen to as I drive back and forth from work or while running errands, and an ebook on my Palm phone for those times you don't want to pull out an actual book but have a few minutes to read. I'm on the list for a Kindle, so we'll see how that goes! I like the convenience of ebooks, but I don't think they will ever replace regular paper books for me.

i enjoyed audio mysteries while camping, or while driving the backroads.....i have to do dishes or putter tho, or i go off as well

It's not much of a problem for me as I tend not to sit in direct sunlight anyway and we don't get lots of it in Scotland.

I mostly read regular books, but I was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and some days, I just can't hold up a book. That's when my Kindle really comes in handy. I can hold it up even on my worst days.

I just got the new Kindle in the mail yesterday. I really like it so far. I've been using the Kindle app on my iPhone and I can tell I will like the actual Kindle better. It is very thin and light and the page turns are way faster than on the Nook I played with at Barnes and Noble. I'm used to a touch screen from my phone but the adjustment hasn't been too hard. I think I read ebooks faster because there aren't as many words on the page so I don't lose my place so much.

I too will never completely give up paper books.

My Kindle should be here on Monday!! I'm very worried about such convenient and instant access to so many books! I'm going to spend too much money!! And I can hardly wait to get started! :)

You've nailed my problem down exactly! It is so easy to buy books! Our credit card looks like I have personally made it my mission to keep Amazon.com in business. Enjoy it!

My Kindle has just arrived too. It is going to be so good for travelling, and it does everything it says it does. Unfortunately in NZ the number of books available is quite limited, compared to the US.

Oh, that's too bad! Have you looked at the ebooks available here on GR? They are mostly older classics - books now in the public domain. But quite a few of them are available in MOBI format, which looks like it must also work for Kindle. And they are free!

I love my Kindle, I've had it about a year and a half. It allows me to read faster. Especially when my daughter was a baby I kept starting a book, getting distracted by her and then spending half my next reading opportunity looking for my place. The Kindle lets me put the book down and pick it right back up at the same place. I like the bigger font, even though my eyes aren't particularly bad, it feels better to read big. (The Kindle screen feels a lot better than an iPhone or computer screen too.)

The Kindle has also made me feel less guilty about stopping reading a book that I don't like. And the free samples help me weed out books before I even get around to buying them.

I've read more since getting the Kindle, but I also like a variety of reading formats. I still read hardcover and paperback (usually cheap buys, loaners or gifts, but occasionally a book that is overpriced on Kindle or I can't find).

I also read on the Kindle app for iPhone and I've downloaded a couple other reading apps. I just finished reading Alice in Wonderland as a stand-alone app. Reading it in a different format helped me get through it in short bits--though I think this version was abridged.

I played with my Dad's iPad and see the advantage of the eBooks for Ipad: pictures. It looks like you could read picture books with a kid on it (cool!)

This is why I make all my Kindle purchases on my Amazon credit card. That way I at least get cash back for my books - which of course buys more books!!

well, i have been talked into getting a kindle......it is so fun to read the opinions here.....i will try to use the library for downloading and find as many free books as i am able, and this is a great place.....there r many classics that i have yet to read, as a tomboy i read comics and mad magazine whenever it was raining.....lol

My Kindle just arrived today! I've been having fun testing out all the features. I absolutely love being able to download a sample of a book. So far I've resisted actually purchasing any books, though! I had some books already downloaded (free classics from here on GR) so I've transferred those over to the Kindle. I'm sure I'll buy the occasional book - especially things I really want to read that aren't yet available at my library.

I have a iPad and can read on the iPad, kindle or nook. There are some books that can be shared when you purchase them, so let me know if you want to share some books. I need to figure out the logistics.

Welcome to the group, Gina! I did not know you were in this group! It is one of my favorites.
I am slowly working on my husband to get me an ipad or nook for Christmas. I am holding my breath!

Susan- I have a Visa card through Amazon and the cash back is in the form of Amazon "gift certificates" so they must be used at Amazon (no problem for us as we shop there a lot!) I'm not sure how much you have to spend to equal 1$ back but I think amazon purchases are double. I used the gift certificates and got my Kindle for free.

I read mostly paperback or hardback. I have an iPhone and have downloaded a few apps for reading books on there. I have only started one book on the Kindle app so far. I just read it when I am out and don't have a book with me.

I have been wanting to get an e-reader but don't see that happening for a long time since I don't have enough money at the moment.

I really don't know which I like better. Mostly everyone I talk to has the kindle. I have looked at the nook and the sony e-reader but I really can't decide until I have one in my hands for more then just a few minutes. Plus I am still trying to figure out the big differences besides prices.

this is what i am trying to do as well, but i live in a remote place and seeing as i can't touch the actual product, i need u guys to be my eyes and hands.......lol

Well I have looked at a few in different stores but most of them are demos and it just isn't the same as me being able to actually read a book or even just flip through a few pages to get the feel for it. I looked at a Kindle in Target and it didn't impress me because I couldn't do anything on it. I did get a site from someone to compare the different devices. I will have to see if I can find it and post it here.

My $.02 for what its worth:

I was really leaning towards the Nook because of the "lend a book to a friend" factor until I realized that you can only lend each title ONE time. I spent a good 20 min. or so at Barnes and Noble playing with a Nook and it wasn't very intuitive. I had to ask the sales gal how to find or do some things. The page turns were obnoxiously slow. I had read several ebooks on my iphone with the Kindle app and was used to getting a new page with a finger swipe. Nook is probably a better choice if you want to get ebooks from the library which isn't really important for me.

I ended up getting the new Kindle with wi-fi and I love it. It is so much smaller and lighter than the Nook. The Nook actually bothered my wrists after a while. Plus I can "lend" books to friends that have the Kindle app for their computer or phone by adding them to my account and uploading the book to their device. Then I just remove them from my account. You can have up to six (I think) devices on one account at a time. Oh and the page turns are so much faster. Plus the battery life is longer. And I prefer to buy my books from Amazon rather than Barnes and Noble. I like the web site better and I prefer the Kindle app on my iphone over the Barnes and Noble app. It takes a few minutes to get used to pushing buttons after having a touch screen but the Nook was confusing because it had a touch screen but it wasn't the screen I would be looking at or reading from. I never did quite get used to that while I was playing with it.

I never looked into any other ereader so I can't say how they compare but I do love my Kindle.

I've only had my Kindle for about a week and a half, but so far I absolutely love it. Like Lahni said, it did take a little bit to get used to pushing buttons instead of touching the screen. But now I don't even think about it. I LOVE being able to download samples of books before deciding whether to read them. Now my problem is that I still have stacks of real books waiting for me to read them - many of them on my YOU CHOOSE list. I will end up reading one or two of the classics on my YOU CHOOSE list on the Kindle, though.

Another plus for digital books: I was at the book store today and saw The Passage which I'm currently reading. I knew it was a big book but I didn't realize it was THAT big. I think it would have stayed on my "to read" list a lot longer if I had known. As it is I read along in blissful ignorance.

Onarock - you would need a light -they say any where you can read a paper book you can read an e-ink book. I have found that to be pretty much true. You could get a case with a light or you can get cases and lights separately, in case the case you want doesn't come with a light. I ordered a case from Oberon.com and it makes me feel like I'm reading a really nice book edition. So far I have no light.

I purchased the Amazon Kindle 3 cover with the light. It's VERY nice because the light easily slides away into the corner when you don't want it, but also easily slides out and lights up the Kindle when you need it. It takes its power directly from the Kindle so doesn't require batteries. I thought it was a little pricey, but worth it for the convenience of a built-in light.

I still read paper, but trying to read my nook more. I also read with my ibook app on my phone.
