Love to David. I'm working through the weekend so will catch up on Monday.:)

I hope the silence today is an indication that you are all working hard.

* Paul has done his painting etc.
* Mandy is delivering lots of gorgeous new Aussies.
* David is preparing for his trip.
* Jan is doing her housework.

What is everyone else doing?

message 153: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Nope, no painting here... weather is looking like rain (aaahahahaha - I wish, up here in the rural FNQ... hahaha).

I have been working though, promoting Elita's book of course, complaining about us being so poor that we steal from the mice under the fridge, moaning about the heat/humidity.

On more sane things, I've been having stimulating debates with people on model-aircraft forums talking about politics and the environment (eh!?), it's stimulating because I feel like I'm winning. Alas, on the internet, even if you win an argument it's still pretty silly - no one listens.

You will be happy to know I am suitibly impressed.
::fingers crossed behind my back::

Hope you have wealthy mice.

My husband said he was going to paint the bedroom door back in ... let me see ... hmmmm ... 2004 yup, he even purchased the paint.

Can't rush these things now Gail, on my week of I might get to finally put the roof on my little shed, only been a 3 year project. (-:

message 156: by [deleted user] (new)

Ha ha, still plenty of time. :)

message 157: by Jan (new)

Jan (auntyjan) I first saw Port Douglas in 1967 so feel lucky to have seen it then. My biggest shock of overdevelopment was Noosa. In 1967 there was a caravan park and the river was natural with a pelican gliding on the water at sunset...I had beautiful memories and was looking forward to seeing the place again on a trip around Australia in 1989...as we approached I could see a man-made edge along the river. There was still a pelican on the water but everything was so changed it was like a suburb...I had a surprisingly strong emotional reaction...the place where we once holidayed was now just a memory. We kept on driving and didn't stop to see any more.

message 158: by [deleted user] (new)

It's a shame, nothing stands still for long Jan. There is not any where near enough respect or appreciation for the natural environment. I detest those man-made edges along rivers. To me they are synonymous with power boats & jet skis. Yuck.

Ooooouch, I just got a paper cut. Where is Mandy when I need her?

As Mandy indicates above, the 'g' is pronounced but it is soft and the 'h' is silent.

Just got home from work Gail. Are you still haemorrhaging? Call the ambulance!!!

Out for dinner tonight at my cousins. Her son (my godson) is in second year of medicine and has chosen to do his practical component at a busy hospital in India (much to his mum's dismay). He says they get much more hands on experience there than in an Australian hospital! I feel sorry for the Indian patients having a lot of 2nd year med students bothering them! So we're having Indian for dinner and I might slip him a little cash for his trip.:)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments I'm just in from mowing the lawn for 3/4~1hr... bleah, I'm unfit. From 18 months ago when I was fit as a fiddle, playing squash 3 times a week for 2 hrs, top player of the town etc... to now, porked out 15kg, anxiety, issues issue issues... amazing how life can be turned upside down by one small thing (like the closure of a set of squash courts or lack of $).

I really feel for you Paul. I've recently contracted Ross River Fever for the second time - no one mentioned that it stays in your blood stream for up to 15 years and can re-occur like malaria or something. I can't even arm-wrestle my cat at the moment :)

Poor Tracey! Thank God for books hey.:)

message 165: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Tracey,

Ah yes, evil RRF.. scary to think I lived over 20 years about 200m from that river. What knocked us around this year was back in March we picked up glandular fever, the fever itself was very mild but we were left with inflamed liver/spleen for the next 6 months (we've only just now recovered enough to not notice it each day).

I know, one shouldn't flood this thread with tales of woe - needless to say one wonders at times just when things will get "better". That said, I think that as an author, things like anxiety disorder, OCD etc really brings out a unique slant to the stories being written. Readers of Elita's "Tree of Life" who have or are enduring such complications will likely feel the core of the story with a heightened passion.

Now, tomorrow I hope to get the painting of the outside walls start, assuming the weather plays along :)

Mandapanda Paul wrote: "I know, one shouldn't flood this thread with tales of woe - needless to say one wonders at times just when things will get "better"...."

All tales of woe are welcome! Paul, what you need is a sound financial plan. I'll lend you mine.
Step 1. Win Lotto.
Step 2. Retire.
End of Plan!

P.S. What did they do with the old squash courts? Do you think someone else might take over?

message 167: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Mandy,

The old courts were supposed to be converted into living quarters (Crazy plan in reality given the huge amount of internal rework required. Needless to say things collapsed and the bank forclosed on the property. Unfortunately there was only one bidder at the auction and they were well under the reserve price - so since then no one knows for sure what's going on.

We're trying to build a new set of courts but that's a $250,000 bill none of us can pay right now, even with ideal membership numbers.

Given the huge theraputical gains the courts give and seeings how the government are supposedly meant to be encouraging people to be active, it's hard to see why they can't provide a loan or assistance into the matter.

Until then, I'll have to stick with mowing, yard work, painting, carpentering and typing furiously on this keyboard to break my daily sweat.

Paul

PS, love the financial plan, ours was similar;

1. Write book
2. Get rich
3. Retire

message 168: by Mark (last edited Sep 17, 2010 04:33AM) (new)

Mark (valiukas) Paul, I think you're missing a step or two in that business plan. Oh, and the are on line two... something about a business methods patent?

message 169: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe Paul you should consider taking up tennis?

Plan
1. Get rich.
2. Retire

Haven't got no. 1 plan fully thought through yet. ;)

message 170: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda Mark wrote: "Oh, and the Underpants Gnomes are on line two... something about a business methods patent?"

Aahh! So my plan should be:
Step 1. Win Lotto
Step 2. ?
Step 3. Retire.
It makes so much more sense now Mark.:)

message 171: by [deleted user] (new)

And so much more likely now that you have a complete plan Mandy. What would we do without such astute business plans to get us by?

message 172: by [deleted user] (new)

Hope you don't mind Mandy, I have been tidying the book shelves by removing the books that were entered twice.

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Morning all - hope you've all got a fun filled weekend.

I'm going to -try- do that painting still, though at least the lawns are now mowed (which was good, as the exercise is sorely needed :) ).

Hi Paul, Here are some blogs etc that appear when you google 'I Hate Painting':

P.S. reading these is another good reason to put it off!

message 176: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Oh Mandy, you're suppose to be helping me do the painting, not discouraging me :( .

I'm just sitting here sipping my first coffee of the day, waiting also for my cat to go to sleep.

Other than that, trying to stir up business in my normal arenas (electronic design, programming etc)... I sadly fear I may have to start doing Web sites for a living again :cringe:

I realise that in your field you can work from home but I'm just wondering if there are any drawbacks to finding work with you being quite a distance from the main cities?

message 178: by Mark (new)

Mark (valiukas) Paul wrote: "I sadly fear I may have to start doing Web sites for a living again :cringe:."

Oh noes! Undocumented scope changes, explained to you in the imaginary conversation the client had with you while they were smoking crack? The never-ending procession of security problems? Spam act and privacy law compliance, with a client who thinks that buying a billion names cd is a legitimate way to get leads - and that the recipient "can just hit 'Delete' if they don't want it, can't they?"

I hope you manage to keep the other ventures afloat, because I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

Indeed... for all those who've been down that path, they understand clearly why so few choose to return. Of course, let's not also forget the near impossibility of getting the final payment from the client "We need you to change one more thing..." (good reason to charge double, demand half up front and if you get the final half consider it a bonus).

Mandy, the worst drawback can frequently be just not being able to effectively maintain communications with the client.... amongst other things :p

message 180: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments You know, the trouble with people having a "life" and doing things is that they don't post enough stuff in here :D

message 181: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Okay... time to go and mow some more... takes about 2 days to mow this yard due to its strange shape and size. Then it's back tonight to working on some more artwork for the books.

message 182: by [deleted user] (new)

Poor Paul. I tried to get on this morning but there was too much competition for the computer. I had to go out at 11am with sporting commitments, I have gust got home.

message 183: by [deleted user] (new)

'gust got home' does this mean you 'flew in with the wind' LOL!! love typo's

message 184: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Typos make things a lot more interesting quite often. Also good exercise for deciphering less obvious things.

message 185: by [deleted user] (new)

Ha ha, my goodness. Well unfortunately I'm likely to provide lot's of typo's. I'm hopeless at proof reading and typing. :D

message 186: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments You should try live-chat in active rooms... can be some rather amazing mishaps that get entered into long-term "funny quotes" archives.

message 187: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmmm, I once posted a comment which when read by others was picked up as 'giggling breasts'. :P

message 189: by [deleted user] (new)

message 190: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda LOL! Trust you to get in the spirit of the thing Gail.:)

message 193: by [deleted user] (new)

Ha ha. Glad you like the choice.

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Anyone know if there's a "live feed" for this site? I know on several of the other sites I haunt I can open up a page which shows all the new thread posts as they happen. It's an excellent way of really getting in the excitement and it lets you expand your boundaries a lot too as you get pulled into entirely new discussions on a frequent basis.

That's a really good question. If you go to the 'group bookshelf' page at the bottom right there is a little rss feed symbol. But I don't know if that just gives you stuff about the bookshelf or all group updates. Do you want to give it a go?

Good morning Aussie Readers. My husband & son are off to Tamworth this week for a State wide softball competition. That leaves my daughter and I at home to party. Unfortunately my daughter has a piano exam today so the partying has been postponed until it's over -- once it's over, party, party, party.

message 199: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda Have a great party Gail. My agenda for today happily includes some gratuitous shopping!

message 200: by Paul (new)

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 155 comments Mm... shopping, that'd be nice.

Feeling a bit of "Monday-itis" here, just not feeling influenced by the "let's take on the world" rush today.

Then again, I'm sure there's plenty who feel the same.
