Alexandra | 40 comments Here's the one that's been driving me crazy...

I read this book years ago, and I remember just a little. I believe "Unicorn" was in the title, but although there is a unicorn in the book it's a minor appearance and this was not a fantasy story. The main character is a young man, and remember that one day all technology stops working. I remember he and a young woman traveling down a highway littered with abandoned vehicles - since cars no longer work. But I don't remember there being other people around - or even where they were going and why.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Debbie Moorhouse Parts of it do but parts don't, if that makes any sense :). The two young people travelling together and the failure of all technology sounds like one of the books in Peter Dickinson's "Changes" SF trilogy, most particularly "The Weathermonger". But although that has horses in it, there's no unicorn.

Anyway, have a look at the The Weathermonger Changes Trilogy and see if it rings any bells. The ISBN is 0007140312 if that link doesn't work!

Alexandra | 40 comments Thank you so much for the suggestions. I looked at "The Weathermonger", that wasn't it. I'm pretty sure the two characters were the only characters in the story, or if there were others they ran into they were minor. I don't think it was part of a series, and I don't think it involved aliens. I remember a very simple story. I'm also fairly sure it took place in America. I'm also remember thinking when I bought it, from the title and the cover, that it would be a fantasy, but it really wasn't.

Madeleine L'Engle has been one of my favorite authors for ages, so I'm sure I would at least have remembered if she had been the author. But I checked out "The Young Unicorns" anyway, just in case, but that isn't it either.

But thank you both for trying! I appreciate it. I know this is a long-shot. I've been trying to remember the title and find this book for ages with no luck. At one time I thought it might be "The Unicorn Highway", as the title seemed likely, but after I bought a used copy - just in case - I found that wasn't it.

Debbie Moorhouse Is there anything else you can remember? Was it a novel or a short story collection/anthology, for example?

message 6: by Alexandra (last edited Aug 25, 2016 12:57PM) (new)

Alexandra | 40 comments It was a novel. I think the author was male, but I might be wrong. I don't think it was a well known book even at the time, and don't think it was from a well-known author - at least not to me. It wasn't one I heard about from others, just something I saw at a store and picked up. It's possible the story itself was just mediocre, I remember it more for the fact that it was different, than that it blew me away.

Short Story by Ursula LeGuin?

Alexandra | 40 comments Hi Maureen,

I couldn't find any information on "Short Story" by Usula LeGuin, but I'm pretty sure this book wasn't by a well-known sci-fi author. But thanks so much for trying! I really would like to figure this one out.

oops-sorry-the leguin i was thinking about was a collection of short stories called orsinian tales
i read it over 25 years ago and don't remember a thing about it but when i read your post
it immediately came to mind
it's a long shot i think but may be worth checking

Janet | 80 comments This is a serious long shot, but what about The Stand, by Stephen King? It's a weird post-apocalypse story. I suggest it because the main scene I remember is that of a young man and woman traveling down the highway littered with abandoned cars...

Kerry (libraryleo) | 13 comments Janis,

I think the book you are looking for might be Ariel: A Book of the Change.
