It's much easier to play than to explain, promise!

[Last reviewed and revised: 25 July 2024]

Basically, here's how the game/challenge works:

We will randomly shuffle players who sign up to play and assign them to teams. Each team will have their own team thread.

Each round consists of 24 shelf names (examples: 'urban fantasy', 'werewolf', 'PNR', etc) or categories (examples: 'blue cover', 'male author', 'pub date 2xxx', etc) or a mixture of both. Those will be randomly entered in the boxes on a bingo card. Each team will have a card with the same 24 shelves/categories listed in a different, randomly shuffled order. Each team's card will also have a free space.

Every week (day of the week & time zone varies each round) a shelf name and link, if applicable, will be posted on the shelf announcement thread. Each member on each team will need to read a book found on that shelf (or one that fits the category listed).

After a member has finished reading their book, they must post a read date, rating (1-5) and a review* on their team thread. Each player's read date, rating, and review is needed for the team to earn a stamp for the specified shelf.

*NOTE: Your review does not have to win any awards for its grammar or prose, however all reviews must be longer than "I really dis/liked it." Include what you did/n't like about it, if you'll read anything else in the series or by the same author, and anything else that made it a stand-out or crapped-out read for you. Please do not simply link to your GR review. You may, however, share a link to it along with your review on your team thread. Link-only and 1-line reviews will not be accepted.

The first team to get a stamp for every announced shelf and their free space achieving 5 stamped shelves in a row (horizontally, diagonally, or vertically) -OR- the round's specific pattern, if differing from typical 5-in-a-row line, wins.

Mandatory: Each player must check-in a minimum of once a week following the shelf announcement. Individual team members who fall 3 books behind will be removed from the challenge. Let your teammates know which book you will be reading. We are understanding of RL issues that may arise throughout the game keeping you from posting, however, this is a TEAM challenge. Interaction from all team members is essential.

Disqualifier: Throughout the game, if a player must drop out, we will do our best to find that team a replacement player. At times, that's not possible; in those situations we will likely allow a team to continue with fewer players. However, if a player must leave the game during the week of a potential winning shelf announcement, no replacement player will be asked to fill their spot, which will disqualify the team from winning.
