Kara (sterlink) I've been really enjoying the 2010 Sherlock mini-series put out by BBC, but have never actually read any of Arthur Conan Doyle works.

I would like to remedy this.

Could someone please suggest one of the better Sherlock Holmes mysteries for me to start with?

Preferably none of the following (which were part of the BBC series):
A Study in Pink
The Blind Banker
The Great Game

Thank you much!

Jenny why not start at the beginning with "A Study in Scarlet"?

Ivan | 8 comments I'm also loving the 2010 Sherlock series and have never read any of the Conan Doyle works. It would thrill my friend Willie if I would....the TBR pile is leaning like the tower in Pisa - urgh!

Jan C (woeisme) Right now, I am enjoying A Study in Scarlet, which is the introduction to Sherlock.

Before that I had just read (re-read) The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Most of the books are books are short stories because they ran in the newspaper. I think there are only a couple of full-length books, which I supposed were serialized at the time. Hound is a full-length book.

There is also The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, which is essentially short stories.

Memoirs and Hound are slim paperbacks. They have recently come out with 2 really thick paperbacks - Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories, Volume I and Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories, Volume II.

Jane | 121 comments Hound of the Baskervilles is a good one also. I am loving the Masterpiece Theater version of Sherlock Holmes. I like this version as opposed to the Robert Downey Jr/Guy Ritchie take in the movie.

Oh, MUCH better than the movie! I just really like the intricate mystery, (and really hate the corny shock factor CSI crap I get force fed on TV).

That was some quick help. From what I'm hearing so far, it sounds like all the Sherlock stories are worth a read.

Anyone up for a buddy read? Ivan??

The stories for the miniseries are none of them original Holmes stories, all being new mysteries written by Stephen Moffat and company, so you are safe reading just about anything Holmes.

If you enjoyed the modern take on Holmes, you might love the earlier BBC Holmes series staring Jeremy Brett. They are set in the Victorian era in which the Holmes stories were written and are very true to the stories. There are three or four full series, which are wonderful, and then two or three single shot movies that were done toward the end of Jeremy Brett's life that aren't nearly as good. Try The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, available on Netflix, to start with.

Werner Jan, you're right that Doyle wrote about Holmes mostly in the short story format. But he did two other Holmes novels besides the two you mentioned: The Sign of the Four and The Valley of Fear. (I've read and liked all four of the novels --as well as many of the stories!)

Jane | 121 comments For an odd take on Sherlock I recommend The Final Solution by Michael Chabron.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I've read pretty much all of them. For the most part I just read them in the order published.

Kara (sterlink) Hey, again, THANKS! I appreciate the info.

I'm still kinda surprised that no one has a favorite... I guess that's a good thing though.

Thanks for the tip! I have The Return of Sherlock Holmes starring Jeremy Brett (friend gave it too me), but didn't realize there were so many others with him as well.
