The rules for the Summer Challenge have been posted. The following has been added
Books identified as an "omnibus" (a volume of reprinted works of a single author or of related works), as a "bundle" (a digital collection of works of a single author or of related works) or as collected works (The Complete .... , anthologies, etc.) may be isolated into component parts and read separately as long as the isolated work has been published separately and meets the minimum page requirements.
The Harry Bosch Novels: The Black Echo / The Black Ice / The Concrete Blonde contains 3 independently published titles: The Black Echo, The Black Ice, The Concrete Blonde. These titles in this omnibus may be read as separate books.
The Study Series Bundle contains 3 independently published titles: Poison Study, Magic Study, Fire Study. These titles in this bundle may be read as separate books.
From William Shakespeare: The Complete Works, Deluxe Edition you may select a single play such as Hamlet.

If you choose to read an element isolated from an aggregate work, you MUST include a link to the book (isbn) that you read AND provide a link to a separately published work that relates to the isolated title. The use of particular title words, cover colors, or cover images to fulfill tasks applies to the actual book that you read.

Page numbers should be determined by the copy you read whenever possible. If a component part has 200 pages in the volume you read, record those numbers. For digital or audio formats use the page numbers provided if possible or follow the page number guidelines in item 5 above for the isolated title.

We strongly recommend that all players read these rules before the start of the Spring Challenge

If you have questions, please post them in Task Help Summer 2011 General Questions

We have added a clarification to the rules regarding audiobooks.

Audiobooks that are noted as being “abridged may be used to meet the general 100+ page book requirement as long as they are at least 2 hours in length. Abridged audiobooks may NOT be used for tasks with defined longer page requirements as there are no direct print equivalents.

We have added a clarification to the rules regarding ebooks.

ebooks without print versions cannot be used for tasks requiring a specific number of pages.

ebooks can still be used for specific page number tasks as long as there is a print equivalent that can be used to determine page numbers.

ebooks without print equivalents can be used for tasks without specific page requirements, since it is usually possible to "guesstimate" from the word count that a book is at least 100 pages long.

Books that are published only as ebooks come in varied formats, and some formats don't have traditional pages. We can't verify a specific page number for those ebooks. And unfortunately, the page numbers added to a book's description on ŷ are not reliable - any GR librarian can add a page number to a book's description and since there is no actual book with pages, there is no way to tell why he or she decided on that number of pages. We have seen some page numbers added that contradict all the other information about the book, including information on the author's own website about the approximate length.

We will continue to review the use of ebooks as technology and the information provided by book publishers and retailers change.

The Rules for the Winter 2011 Challenge have been posted.
The moderators review the rules each season. Here's a summary of the changes.

General Information #7
Each book must be read completely and can be counted only once per challenge.

All elements of books separated into multiple audio or paperback parts (often identified as “Part 1, “Part 2, etc.) must be read. Individual chapters of a book or unfinished serialized books (released by chapter) cannot be used.

Book Formats and Page Numbers Explained #4
All tasks require reading at least 100 pages unless otherwise stated in a specific task. It is okay to read two or more books to meet minimum page requirements (plays, poetry, etc.).
One book between 80 -100 pages may be used for one 5 point task.
*Picture Books and collections of syndicated or internet comic strips or panels must be aggregated to at least 500 pages.

*This applies to newspaper-style comic strips that appear in single or short format panels. This does not impact the use of graphic novels, sequential art books, manga, or collections of comic book issues.

Big Books
There has been a change in ŷ Author and Big Book Rules. Graphic novels, sequential art books, manga, collections of comic book issues, and collections of comic strips may not be claimed for Big Book tickets.

Group Reads Nominations
Categories may only be used once per year cycle (4 seasons)
Category nominators must respond with category nominations within 3 days of notification. Two additional days may be used to nominate a specific book title. Book nominators must respond within 5 days.

We strongly recommend that all players read the rules completely before the start of the Winter Challenge.

If you have questions, please post them in Task Help Winter 2011: General Questions

The Rules for the Spring 2012 Challenge have been posted. The moderators review the rules each season. Here's a summary of the changes.

#5 Determining Page Numbers:
When determining page count, you should go by the copy you read- EXCEPT as noted below for ebooks, audiobooks, and large print books. Therefore, if you obtain (own, borrow, check out from the library, etc.) the hardback edition, use the page count for the hardback edition. If you obtain the paperback edition, use that page count.

If you read an ebook or audiobook use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

ebooks without print versions cannot be used for tasks requiring a specific number of pages. ebooks can be used for specific page number tasks as long as there is a print equivalent that can be used to determine page numbers

Large Type books may be used. The mass market paperback edition of the title must meet the 100 page threshold. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition. Big Book tickets may be claimed for Large Type books if the mass market paperback meets the Big Book requirement. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

We strongly recommend that all players read the rules completely before the start of the Spring Challenge.

If you have questions, please post them in Task Help Spring 2012: General Questions

The Rules for the Summer 2012 Challenge have been posted. The moderators review the rules each season. Here's a summary of the changes.

Posting Requirements
To claim a task in Completed Tasks, the book you use MUST exist on ŷ. Instructions on manually adding a book to the ŷ database can be found in Add a book instructions You MUST include a link to the book edition you read. If a task requires details about an author, the author link must be included. For instructions on adding a link, see Add book/author/cover Instructions in General Help. Further details on posting requirements can be found in Posting Requirements in the Rules folder

And just a note on adding books- editions are not automatically combined. If you add a new edition of a book, please ask a librarian to combine the editions. New series titles must be manually added to the series listing as well.

Using ebooks- **if you are an ebook reader, please review the ebook rules.
If you claim a book in Completed Tasks that exists ONLY in ebook format, you must provide a reference to the ebook verification document when you post ex."Approved @ line #" or provide the post number in the ebook verification thread where it was approved ex. "ebook Approved post #"

And a note on genres
Added to Task requirements
4. For tasks that require books within specified genres the main book page's front page genre list will be used to determine suitability. Unless explicitly limited by the task creator, reasonable variations of genres will be accepted: ex. mythology, myths, myths-and-legends, mythological, etc.

Rewards of the Challenge
We've eliminated the 35 point tasks. They required too many last minute adjustments. We try to streamline the SRC process whenever we can

We strongly recommend that all players read the rules completely before the start of the Summer Challenge.

If you have questions, please post them in Task Help Summer 2012: General Questions

The Rules for the Winter Challenge have been posted.

A note on genres
For tasks that require a book to have a specific genre: The genre must appear on the list when you access it and the player may not shelve a book as a genre in order to use that book for the task.

20 point Task Creators
To be eligible to create a 20 point task a player must have earned 100 points in the qualifying challenge.

We strongly recommend that all players read the rules completely before the start of the Winter Challenge.

The Rules for the Spring 2013 Challenge have been posted.

Please see Formats and page numbers- rules 3-7.

A brief summary:
Books must have 100+ pages to be used for points in the SRC. Only plays or books of poetry may be combined to reach the 100 page minimum. Other genres of books must meet the 100+ page requirement on their own.

The Young Reader rule (Winter #6) has been changed and rules 4 and 5 now cover the use of children's books.

Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may only be used for 5, 10, and 15 point tasks.

Task creators will be able to determine if children's books <300 pages and/or graphic novels may be used for their tasks

We strongly recommend that all players read the rules completely before the start of the Spring Challenge.

The Rules for the Spring 2014 Challenge have been posted.

A summary of the updates:

3. Books must have at least 100 pages to be used for points in the SRC. This limit may be referenced as 100+.
Only plays or books of poetry may be combined to reach the 100 page minimum. Other genres of books must meet the 100+ page requirement on their own.

One book between 80 -99 pages may be used for ONE 5 point task.

>This clarifies the rule's wording, but doesn't change the acceptable book length.

5. For tasks that require information about a book or author, such as author's birthday or author's national origin, the ŷ record will be used to determine fit. If the information is missing from the ŷ record, a link to verifying information may be included in your post. Outside data cannot be used to contradict data existing on ŷ.

> The moderators will use the ŷ record to determine fit.

6. If information in a ŷ record is incorrect or incomplete, you may ask a ŷ librarian to update the record if possible. Information required for a task, such as missing print edition page numbers, should be corrected before you post.

> This helps the moderators and the ŷ community.

We strongly recommend that all players read the rules completely before the start of the Spring Challenge.

The Rules of the Summer Challenge have been posted.

A summary of the update
Clarifies rule 8: determining page numbers for ebooks and audiobooks

If there are multiple editions in a format:
From the editions page (click all editions on the main book page)
Set the Format as explained above, beginning with Mass Market Paperback
Set the Sort By as "num ratings"
Use the top edition result to determine the page number for ebooks and audiobooks
If there are no editions in MMPB, reset with Paperback and the same sort (num ratings). If there are no paperback editions, reset with Hardcover and the same sort (num ratings). If there are no print editions the ebook or audiobook may not be used for a task requiring a page number

If the sort results in a Large Type edition at the top, omit that book and move to the next record or format.

The Rules of the Fall 2014 Challenge have been posted.

The rule for using books with the genre "childrens" or "kids" has changed. Please review rule 4 carefully. We hope this new process will make it easier to tell if your book will fit a task. If a book fits rule 4 it may be used for any task. Task creators may still exclude books with children's genres.

There has been a change in the use of sequential art, manga, comics, comic books:
For 5, 10, and 15 point tasks and 20+ point tasks with the task creator inclusion.

Graphic novels, manga or collected comic book issues must be at least 100 pages.
Collections of syndicated, periodical or internet comic strips, single or short-format panels, or cartoons must be at least 200 pages to be used for SRC tasks

There is also a change to the Rewards of the Challenge effective Fall 2014
Task 20.8 has changed. Those who complete all the 5 and 10 point tasks but do not finish the challenge will be entered into a random drawing to create a 20 point task. The first "Nickels & Dimes" task will appear in Winter 2014.
The reward for the Summer Challenge task 20.8 remains "It's My Birthday".

We strongly recommend that all players read the rules completely before the start of the Fall Challenge.

Susan A | 1544 comments I have a question about the children's genre change.

Texas Family

Not a book intended for children, but is shelved as children because it is a topic in the book

I can't look this up in AR Finder since it is not a children's book. I guess that's why it doesn't show up.

Are all "adult" books that have been shelved as children's books excluded from all SRC task then?

Thanks for your help.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4419 comments I have several questions ...

on AR Bookfinder ... what do these codes mean? Just wondering because I've never seen this site before and can't seem to find a place that identifies what MG or BL or AR mean.

In your rules you have:
d) Books that have an IL designation of MG or MY (in the UK) MUST ALSO have a BL of 5.0 (or higher) AND AR Pts of 7.0 (or higher)

e) ONE book with the IL designation of MG or MY (in UK) with a BL of at least 5.0 OR AR Pts of at least 5.0 will be allowed for ONE 5-point task

Emphasis added by me .... d) has an AR points of 7.0 while e) has AR points of 5.0
The BL values are 5.0 for both options.

Just want to be sure this difference in intentional.

Thank you.

message 19: by Sandi (last edited Aug 14, 2014 12:42PM) (new)

Sandi Barnes | 548 comments There is a parent's guide and link to it is here:

I'm not sure if you choose student, teacher, or librarian options there would be a different guide, but here is some info from the guide I referenced.

IL = interest level

Interest Levels are:
LG = lower grades - K-3rd (SRC disallowed)
MG = middle grades - 4th-8th (SRC allowed with conditions)
MG+ = middle grades plus - 6th and up
UG = upper grades - 9th-12th

Still looking for BL and/or AR -- AR may stand for Accelerated Reader and BL may stand for Book Level

ETA: From the Guide --

What Is the ATOS Book Level?
Book level represents the difficulty of the text and is determined using the ATOS readability formula. For example, a book level of 4.5 means the text could likely be read independently by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical fourth-grader in the fifth month of school. The content of the book, however, may or may not be appropriate. The interest level will give you a recommendation regarding the appropriateness of the content.

Yes, the difference is intentional.
For IL MG
For d) the scores are: BL at least 5.0, AR Pt at least 7.0
For e) you may use one book for a 5 point task that meets these conditions - one of the BL or AR Pt scores must be at least a 5.0

I appreciate this change. It may take some getting used to, but I think will help some books that have a childrens genre, but are at an upper level. I read a book for the Summer Challenge that I had to move to a different task because it had childrens listed under the genre. Under the new rules, it would have been allowed.

Here's a thought - if you've finished the challenge, or you've finished all the books you'll be able to complete before the end of the challenge, keep your eagerness for the start of the new challenge under control by reviewing the rules. Start with The Rules of the Challenge. Then, take a look at the expanded explanation of GRA and BB tickets and the FAQs.

Even if you've been doing this awhile, you should review the rules - there may well have been changes since the last time you looked.

Finally, before you get ready to post that first book, refresh your memory on the Posting requirements.

This will give you something to think about while you're waiting to start that exciting new book on March 1! And, help you stay out of the ?/Problems thread!!

The Rules of the Fall 2105 Challenge have been posted.
Here's a summary of the changes, but we strongly recommend you read the rules thoroughly each season.

The omnibus rules in #11 have been detailed:
>tasks involving elements in the title/subtitle are determined by the isolated work
>tasks involving the author/author name are determined by the isolated work
>tasks involving the book's cover are determined by the book that you read. If an omnibus includes individual covers for the isolated works use the cover for the individual title. If the only cover image is the cover of the aggregate work use that cover.

When determining page count, you should go by the copy you read- EXCEPT for ebooks, audiobooks, and large print books.
If you read a large print edition for tasks that require page numbers follow the page number determination rules used for ebooks and audiobooks.

Only authors that are identified as authors (or a default blank in the author role field), co-authors, or contributors may be used for tasks involving author information. Other roles or functions such as editor, illustrator, artist, translator, introduction, designed by, foreward, preface, assistant or afterword may not be used for author-sourced tasks. Ask about other roles identified in a ŷ record in the season's General Questions help thread.

And there has been a change to the Rewards of the Fall 2015 Challenge
Task 20.4 Author! Author! has been replaced with task 20.4 Golden Oldies
Players may earn a ticket for each book FIRST published in or before 1950. A random ticket will be drawn from the ticket pool to determine who creates this task. Challenge finishers are not eligible for the drawing. Players must specifically request a ticket in the completed task post by claiming "Golden Oldie" and stating the original publication year. See the current season's Posting Requirements for more information.

Fall task 20.4 will be drawn from the Summer 2015 GoodReads Author ticket pool.
During the Fall Challenge you may claim Golden Oldies tickets and the first 20.4 Golden Oldies task will be chosen for the Winter 2015 Challenge.

The Rules of the 2015 Winter Challenge have been posted.

We strongly recommend you read the rules thoroughly each season.

Rule 7. We have removed "All elements of books separated into multiple audio or paperback parts (often identified as “Part 1, “Part 2, etc.) must be read. Individual chapters of a book or unfinished serialized books (released by chapter) cannot be used."

The publishing industry is changing, and the way some books are being released is changing as well. As the publishing schedule is not always easy to determine from a ŷ record, we are lifting this restriction. Please be wary of "preview chapters" and "excerpts", books must still be read completely.

Rule 7 now reads "Each book must be read completely and can be counted only once per challenge."

The ebook verification records related to Parts and serial novels will not be updated until after December 1.
