Peep (Pop! Pop!) Never mind! I already ordered two.

Loaned a kid Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta and he loved it. Then I said if he read The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive, #1) by Brandon Sanderson and wrote a 300 word essay on it, I would buy him 3 fantasy books. He loved it and ended up writing about 600 words. He also read it pretty fast.

So, now I need three fantasy books. Epic, fun, strong male characters? Not Harry Potter, he's read that. Doesn't have to be YA, just awesome.

So can you help me please? I need three books. Sheesh, next time I'll think before I throw out things like that. I haven't even bought myself three new books :(

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 484 comments The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton I enjoyed this

message 3: by Emmy (new)

Emmy the rangers apprentice series is pretty good! i liked it a lot. Another one that is a three book series is Sabriel, Liriel and Abhorson by Garth Nix. The first book has a female main character and male supporting and then the next 2 books switch off from 2 viewpoints, one female and one male. I will lwt you know if i think of any more :)

message 4: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) My favorite Epic Fantasy series is Robert Jordan, Wheel of Time series. The first is Eye of the world.

The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan

I also loved Terry Goodkind's Swoard of Truth series for the first 6 books, or so... that starts with Wizard's First Rule.

Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, #1) by Terry Goodkind

I also know that George R.R. Martons series that starts with A Game of Thrones is popular, though I havne't read it.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin

message 5: by Heidi (new)

Heidi How about The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness or Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant ?

message 6: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Gone was good... Knife is on my list, lol.

message 7: by Heidi (last edited Nov 30, 2010 12:57PM) (new)

Heidi I also liked The Book of Three (The Chronicles of Prydain, #1) by Lloyd Alexander

Fantasy that was too middle grade for me, but a younger guy might like include The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus Trilogy, #1) by Jonathan Stroud and Airborn (Matt Cruse, #1) by Kenneth Oppel .

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Thanks everyone. You guys are fast. These books better be cheap! Hahaha.

Heidi: Knife? Shudder. You know how I felt about that book. Hmmm, but they might like it. So you really think a 16 year old boy would like Gone? But you didn't like it that much, did you?

Ottilie, the Outsiders is good! I forgot about that one. Wait, what's it about? Is there a lesson learned in the end? I can't remember.

Emmy, I thought about Sabriel. Do you think boys would like it though? I was considering it because it's fantasy and everyone seems to like it, though I couldn't finish it.

Wendy, good ones. I've heard of those. Me thinks I'll pick at least one of those!

message 9: by Heidi (new)

Heidi The knife is good Peep. Stop being a baby! Gone would be great for a teen boy - that is your target audience...correct???

message 10: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I might get more than three. These are all actually good picks. No more suggestions or you guys are going to put me in the poor house!

message 11: by Heidi (new)

Heidi What about Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles, #1) by Suzanne Collins ? I liked that one. The Outsiders is not fantasy - sorry!

message 12: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Yes, he is a teen. The boys are in placement.

And Knife? PSHAW!

message 13: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Then Gone would be good. It is clean for the most part and it is about a group of teens who live without adults - every kids fanatsy.

message 14: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) And every parents NIGHTMARE!

message 15: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Wendy wrote: "And every parents NIGHTMARE!"

Ha! I actually like Lord of the Flies by William Golding better, but it is not as much of a fantasy book as Gone.

message 16: by Jason (new)

Jason (foreverjuly) | 176 comments Here's a good one: Elfhunter A Tale Of Alterra, The World That Is by C.S. Marks

message 17: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Oh Peep, this is my favorite genre, so my list really could break the bank, but for strong male leads I would say:

The Dark is Rising series starting with Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper

The Lord of the Isle series starting with Lord of the Isles by David Drake

The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner (how could you forget that one?)

The Heir Chronicles starting with The Warrior Heir

The Word and Void series starting with Running with the Demon by Terry Brooks, and really anything by Brooks is epic fantasy that will appeal to boys of all ages

The Bridei Chronicles starting with The Dark Mirror by Juliet Marillier

Age of Fire series starting with Dragon Champion by E.E. Knight

Eragon

The Farseer Trilogy starting with Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb

Alternating view points:

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull (I adore Seth, the male lead, one of my most favorite characters)

And female leads with awesome male supporting roles:

Mistborn series starting with Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Graceling

If you want more, I've got more!

message 18: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Thanks Becca! I will keep all the books in mind. Apparently the kid acted up, so I only able to order him two. Out of the list he picked Wizards First Rule and a Game of Thrones. I wanted to get more but hubby said no way.

I'll use the list as a stand by because the kid likes to read.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments if he likes to read i would say libraries may be your new best friend.

message 20: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Wizard's First Rule is a great choice for a teen boy. Richard is a very strong character.

message 21: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Brittany, they are in placement (detention center). The library on campus is small and older and not very popular. :/

I read it in 7th grade but I think it was bout street boys and someone dies and the boys go into hiding and their lives. It was awsome. If the reader enjoys it there is a movie which stuck to the book

message 23: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) The movie was excellent, but it didnt' compare to the book.

Outsiders is DEFINITELY a classic, but Heidi's right, it's not a Fantasy.

message 24: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Oh it is an excellent book Ottilie. Don't get me wrong there :)

message 25: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Heidi I wrote: "Wendy wrote: "And every parents NIGHTMARE!"

I never actually read Lord of the Flies, though I've heard really good things about it. From what people say Gone is very similar to LotF, add in some mutations.

message 26: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Gone is just like LOTF except for the mutations plus there are girls in Gone. You should read LOTF Wendy. It freaked me out for days!

message 27: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) You said you hadn't read Lies yet, right? Suffice to say, the eating of human's even for survival really really grosses me out. I don't even like to watch the Ethan Hawke movie Alive.

Heidi Wendy wrote: "You said you hadn't read Lies yet, right? Suffice to say, the eating of human's even for survival really really grosses me out. I don't even like to watch the Ethan Hawke movie Alive."

Nope I haven't. I read Gone and Hunger. By your last statement I think I am glad I skipped Lies! p.s. I feel your pain, I could barely even deal with talk of the Donner Party in "America: The Story of Us" on The History Channel!

message 29: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments I found Lord of the Flies extremely disturbing when I read it back in eigth grade (i think), and don't think I want to read something like it again even as an adult.

message 30: by Karen (new)

Karen | 16 comments How about Rot & Ruin (Benny Imura, #1) by Jonathan Maberry - great male characters. More horror than fantasy I guess, though.

message 31: by Ottilie (new)

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 484 comments Oh I only mentioned the movie cause I know some people like reading a book then seeing the movie

message 32: by Ottilie (new)

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 484 comments See I like that sometimes cause I have trouble visionalizing some of it. With DaVinci code it was good to see what I read for a few parts, I'm more visual

message 33: by rebecca j (new)

rebecca j (technophobe) | 15 comments Don't forget the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey or the Dragon Bones books by Patricia Briggs. Or the dragon series by Jane Yolen starting with Dragons Blood, or The White Dragon by Anne McCaffrey.
