Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments Yeah, that's a hit or miss series, Jenn. Glad you're trying out Mercy. Love that one too! Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Jenn!
I didn't finish the first book of Downside ghosts either. It seemed disgusting to me and wouldn't be reading it again.
Try Anne Aguirre grimspace. It's a sci-fi but it has both slow building romance and a kick ass heroine.

Sandra | 25818 comments Jenn, Downside Ghosts is either a hit or a miss for most people. It's not for me, but Steph really likes it, and we generally agree on most series.

So if you didn't like it, keep going with Mercy instead. Everyone I know likes Mercy.

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments You like Mercy? Nah. >;)

AmandaG (amandag3) | 122 comments I felt the same way about the ghost series. Maybe I will give it another shot though. The first time I tried reading Kate, I couldn't get past the second chapter. It is now one of my top 3 favorite series (Harry Potter and Troubleshooter/SEAL series are other two).

There is a book called The Shattered Dark that is the first in a series that I really liked. For sure there are two books out, but I am not sure if another had come out yet since I last checked it. I recently picked up Darynda Jones' series (can't remember name right now) and I got through book 5. Waiting for next one to become available at the library.

Sandra | 25818 comments Darynda Jones series is Charley Davidson 1st bk First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones very funny and Reyes is a hottie :)

Sense361 | 22 comments Yes, Sandra. Thank you. The Problem is I have already read it. Do you have some other suggestions?

Lis | 4028 comments How about Jane Yellowrock Skinwalker by Faith Hunter
Or Arcadia Bell Kindling the Moon by Jenn Bennett

Lis | 4028 comments Another one is Stormwalker by Allyson James

Sense361 | 22 comments Trank you Lis. I have read a couple of Books by Faith Hunter. They were good, a little harsh but good.
I also tried Kindling the moon, but couldn't read till the end. I was bored. Is it getting better with other books in the series?

Thank you Lis. This one I haven't read yet. I will try it next.

I think they get better as they go. And it's a completed series, so no waiting for the next one.

Kat Klein | 6 comments It took me 3 tries to get through Downside. It was worth it. It's one of the most unique series out there. And Chess is an amazingly flawed and wonderful MC

Lib (Enthusiastic reader, occasional reviewer) | 2 comments What about the Aisling Grey series by Katie Macalister?? They were good. Lots of laugh out loud moments... It's a bit of a slow burn romance (my favourite), and about dragons and the like, more so than vamps, but still one of my favourite series. I wasn't too enamoured by the follow-on series' but Aisling Grey was the bomb.. The first book is 'You slay me'.

Brooke (brookeluvsbooks) | 25 comments Do you guys have any recommendations that are like Kate but are more about shape shifters, im not a huge fan of vampires. I have already read and loved Mercy Thompson and need more books :)

message 67: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Jane Yellowrock by Faith Hunter.
There are vampires in the series but the main character is a skinwalker and can shift into any animal.

Lis | 4028 comments A few more strong female lead UF series that come to mind...
Alex O'Brien by Trina M. Lee - Once Bitten sometimes you can catch 1-4 bundle free
Bo Blackman by Helen Harper - Dire Straits
Blood Destiny by Helen Harper - Bloodfire
Others by Anne Bishop - Written in Red
Riley Jensen by Keri Arthur - Full Moon Rising
Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones - First Grave on the Right
Guardians Diary by Amelia Hutchins - Darkest Before Dawn
Vampire Empire by Clay Griffith - The Greyfriar
King Trilogy by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff - King's

Sandra | 25818 comments And for shifters you can't go past Nalini Singh and her PsyChangeling series, first book Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh this is pnr but is often confused with uf because of the overall story arc.

She also writes the Guild Hunter series which is humans/angels/vamps, first book Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh . Heavy on the humans/angels. Angels are not sweetness & light in this story and the vamps work for the angels, so aren't top of the tree either.

I hope you liked it then! Another good series is 'Otherkin' by Nina Berry: /book/show/1...

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 2179 comments Strong heroine with a sense of humor (but very little humor, you won't be getting a lot of jokes or the snark factor of Kate Daniels or Charley Davidson):

Hard Magic (Paranormal Scene Investigations #1) by Laura Anne Gilman Hard Magic

Series develops very well in terms of worldbuilding and UF elements (plus the characters of course). A bit more on the crime drama, A-teamish elements than some UF. And is a shortish, finished series where author had a clear story arc and stuck to it.
