I thought some people would like to join me in the new year as I read the much talked about series "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. Try to get some friends or your significant other to join you. We can create another thread to discuss the books with spoilers. :)

Oh, I was planning on starting this one next year anyway, so I'd love to join! I hope I won't hate it though, so I'll be forced to read the sequels. Although based on what I've heard, I have a hard time to believe that. :)

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments Thanks for joining Wan and Rebecca! All are more than welcome to join in the discussion. Some of us are a bit late on the Hunger Games bandwagon. :-P

Kristen (k10bentley) | 422 comments I've already read the series twice and it is my favorite series ever! I would love to be involved in a discussion. I'm a big YA reader (since I teach high school English) and when everyone is finished, I can recommend some other similar titles that will fill the void.

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments Awesome series, I pretty much guarantee you'll all like it. I don't think I've met anyone yet who hasn't, and I know a ton of people who've read it, both on GR & in real life. :)

Enjoy!

I've had a few students who haven't liked it, but I'll keep my opinions of them to myself....just in case any of you don't like it. ;-)

There is something for everyone in this series. I might even read it for third time!

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments YAY! I would love to have reading recommendations if I love it. I love those "if you love this try this" things at the book store. :) I too am big on YA, dystopia, post apocalypse, alternate societies etc.

I don't know how similar they are, maybe someone else knows, but I enjoyed the City of Ember series and the Uglies series. They are YA and may be of a similar vibe.

Here's a few:
Ship Breaker (Ship Breaker, #1) by Paolo Bacigalupi and Birthmarked (Birthmarked, #1) by Caragh M. O'Brien

My students loved these, too!

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 557 comments I might join in, as I am planning on reading this series this year (just not sure if I can fit it in the first 6 months of the year along with my Jazz Parks challenge). I'll see how I go.....

p.s. there are only 30 days in June

message 15: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I can definitely understand the hype now that I've read the first book! I loved it, and will definitely pick up the next one soon :)

message 18: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Catching Fire just came in at the library so I'll be reading that this week. Katniss might be my fav YA heroine so far, definitely a fan :)

*facepalm* I will fix the dates LOL. As for whether you finish before the end isn't too important. I am sure the discussion will be going on for quite some time after. :)

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm about to start the first book now! I'm really excited to see why everyone loves it so much.

message 21: by CyberAlmu (new)

CyberAlmu | 302 comments I've just started HG... Not what I expected, and I feel it a bit too slow.

message 22: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments You're right, it's not super fast paced, but I didn't mind it. And you can look forward to more action in the second half :)

**Catching Fire comments**
I'm reading the second one now and it's so much more emotional than I thought it'd be! I don't know if it's just me, but I've already teared up a couple times, wasn't expecting that at all.

message 23: by Vivian (last edited Feb 07, 2011 03:09PM) (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Finished the series. I might change my mind later, but for now a 5 star series. I'll save comments for later, don't want to spoil anything for anyone :)

ETA: I did downgrade the last two books to 4 stars.

message 24: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments Glad you enjoyed it, Vivian. :)

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments I am on Catching Fire. I am loving the series so far. I love Gale. I have only gotten 1/3 through it so far.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished Catching Fire this weekend and I think I have a love-hate relationship towards it actually! And I'm not a fan of Gale at all. Peeta though!

Why love-hate relationship? Because I find the books extremely slow and out-drawn, I've found myself find things to do except to read even. But I really love the story and the characters and I can't bring myself to let them go! I have to know what happens. I just don't want to read it. If it makes any sense, haha.

I'm taking a break now though before the last book, to see if maybe I'll like it better if I wait a while between reading the books!

message 27: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I understand Rebecca. While I was totally immersed in the first one, the second one seemed slow to me. I loved it after I was done, but a little drawn out.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, the last part I really liked as well, but it took a looong time to get there.

message 29: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I can't believe you could just stop though at the end of Catching Fire!

(view spoiler)

message 30: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments I had to stop, since the third wasn't yet out. But, had I had it on-hand I would not have been able to keep from jumping from one to the next.

message 31: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Yeah, it's weird, because it's not exactly a Fever-type of cliffhanger, but a shock.

Was it in this group where there was talk of Pettyfer as Peeta? I understand he's the IT boy right now, but he seems too pretty for Peeta, imho. And maybe too old?

message 32: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments If there are any other Fever-type cliffhangers, I hope I find out after they are all published. LOL! But, yeah, I agree, just a "what? wonder what happens next" kine.

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. They are probably thinking of him b/c he's in two movies right now, Beastly and #4. Seems those that are currently out tend to draw the eye of casters instead of looking at the entire pool of actors out there. He does look a bit older than I was picturing in my head.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Vivian wrote: "I can't believe you could just stop though at the end of Catching Fire!"

I don't know, but I just aren't in the mood to continue so I just can't. Might try it this weekend though. It wasn't (view spoiler) that shocked me really. I had kind of figured that out. (view spoiler)

message 34: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I think he discussed it in an interview. That he had talked to the director about it and was interested, but yeah, between Beastly and #4, I'm thinking he needs to pick a movie that hasn't already been a book.

message 35: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol well he's also going to be Jace in Mortal Instruments (well it's pretty certain anyway).

message 36: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Yeah he's in talks/negotiations about being Jace, he just has to sign on the dotted line. He's certainly making some dough off the YA genre, huh?

message 37: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments Rebecca, hope you enjoy #3 when you return to the series. :)

Seriously!? Another YA book-->movie? These people need to be more creative when picking actors. I don't like it when actors get popular and start popping up in just about every movie out there. There are SO many to choose from, widen your search a bit instead of defaulting to "the guy that just came off of ...". Just my opinion. LOL!

message 38: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Oh right, that was the other one! I knew there was a YA series I forgot.

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 557 comments He's definately done the rounds - ever since Stormrider (which wasn't a bad film if you like that kind of thing). Was he in Eragon as well?

Anyway - sorry got slightly off topic, I'm going to try and read Hunger Games next month - should be able to make this one afterall!

message 40: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments He certainly has, I liked Stormrider in fact. He wasn't in Eragon, that was some other blondie.

message 41: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I started The Hunger Games this morning....I love it, hate it, don't want to put it down, but need a breather. Intense is a good word, and the reasons I didn't want to start it are fairly clear to me. On the other hand, I'm glad I took the plunge! OK...sound a little schizo, but hey, blame it on the book! Bye until I finish.....

message 42: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments Looking forward to your thoughts when you're done.

message 43: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments So...just finished...literally couldn't put it down (try cooking dinner with smartphone in hand....lol...but I almost managed!) and thoughts are here. What a ride! I'm looking forward to the next, but definitely need some space, and something lighter before that! Shadowfever must wait a little longer....don't think that would be good to dive into immediately after this!

message 44: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments Great review! Hope you enjoy the rest of the trilogy, whenever you get back to it. Definitely a hard to one TBR one after the other.

message 45: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments I'm thinking to do it one a month...next book is comfortable waiting in Silver Wedding Anniversary . With so many cliffhanger warnings hints, I may have to do some rearranging to get Mockingjay down for March, too! Lovely read for tax season time!

message 46: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32520 comments LOL!

message 47: by Dana (last edited Jun 11, 2011 07:57PM) (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Oh, this is serendipitous! I just picked The Hunger Games up from the library today as a 'catch-up' read for another group I joined. Sweet!

It looks like I have been missing out by not reading this series. One of my daughter's guy-pals recommended this to me but I had yet to put it on the 'I might actually find time to read this before I die' list. Based on the comments here, it is absolutely a must read.

And after reading this...

Judithe wrote: "I started The Hunger Games this morning....I love it, hate it, don't want to put it down, ...sound a little schizo, but hey, blame it on the book!..."

A book that feeds my mental instabilities? How can a girl say no? ;P

Judithe | 6566 comments LOL! Enjoy Dana! I was kind of the same way, but am glad I picked it up. Be sure to have the next ones readily available...I need a break before I dive into the next one, but will be doing that SOON! (and would be hurtin' people if I had to wait too long!)

message 50: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Quick question...

Is Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins the last or do I need to steel myself for the fact that I am going to fall into the sticky web of this series, and then be left to twitch and fidget for a year or more like I have ants in my pants?

I don't know if I can survive another KMM/SF attack on my psyche. I'm a Taurus. We aren't patient.
