Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 35. Tatami kontra krzesła. O Japończykach i Japonii by Rafał Tomański - (Tatami vs. chairs. About Japanese and Japan) - very well written, incredibly addictive and giving a lot of facts and curiosities in a condensed way. The only thing which I've missed was actually going a bit deeper in some themes. But generally - really interesting book, I've learned a lot new things and more and more I think that even though it's really intriguing culture I could not feel homely and comfortable, I couldn't live there.

Amanda - I will read this book for sure. I have some trilogies to finish first and because of the fact that I have a lot of book for reviews to read before - it'll take some time, but I'll :)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 36. Come, Tell Me How You Live: an Archaeological Memoir by Agatha Christie - a light story about the part of the life of this author which I did not know before, her travelling around Iraq and Syria with her husband archaeologist, doing archeological researches there. Satire with a bit of kind-hearted smile and emotion, really nice read.

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 37. Jillian Westfield wyszła za mąż by Scotch Allison Winn - pretty addictive and interesting, but in the same time a bit tiring. The main character is chaotic, she is having eye-openers which would be more suitable for a person a few years younger and this mix resulted a lower note than it could get. And additionally author also gave me a reason for lowering the note creating illogical situations, especially at the end of the book - the main character is running around naked, in shock, then saying bye bye to her husband and waving to him through the window while he is getting into the car where the friend is waiting for him. And she is waving naked... Or maybe it was planned like that, who knows ;)

A Pig in Provence: Good Food and Simple Pleasures in the South of France by Georgeanne Brennan - gosh, this woman really know how to describe cooking and eating! During reading this book I was all the time hungry :D Really appetizing descriptions. Only one minus - in the translation into Polish someone put from time to time French words and sentences. Ok, I can understand keeping French names of the food (even if I would prefer to have it translated in footnotes), but putting there whole sentences is strange for me. Ok, sentence "C'est tres bien!" even I can understand, but not all of them were so easy. But in general - nice read :)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 39. My Soul to Take by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir - good crime story, in general better than first book, the plot was so interesting that for the most of the time I was wondering who was the guilty one ;) I was changing my mind many times! Small details which maybe I could possibly criticize, but in general a good read.

40. Wintercraft by Jenna Burtenshaw - I liked it mostly because of the idea. I know, i know - such plot is nothing unique, there are many like that, but I like the details of the plot :p So, I hope that the author will build well next books and will not fail my thrust.

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 41. The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff - a good historical adventure novel for young people, an interesting plot, also related with the human values, nice read :) Now, I'm curious about the rest of the book, it's good I already have them :)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 42. ¶ÙÅ‚´Ç²Ô¾±±ð by MaÅ‚gorzata SzymaÅ„ska-Warda - - bitter story of fate of young artists, story about their entering adulthood, their adolescence, tangle with life. Full of emotions net of relationships. It's giving a lot of questions related with life and people.

message 59: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 43. Firesong by William Nicholson - last book of a trylogy, which (here) is not really promoted and I think it should. Nicholson created a story for young people, which is not full with special effects and pursuits, but is really wise, full of values, references to our daily life and still full of fantasy.

message 60: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 44. Je vous demande le droit de mourir by Vincent Humbert - shocking testimony of a young man, who was "catched" in his body, full of pain and limitations. Incredible account from years of futile fight for improving his health and months of fighting for the right for death.

message 61: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 45. Agamemnon's Daughter: A Novella and Stories by Ismail Kadare - - inner payoff with himself, love, life, system, society. I would like it even more if the style of this book would be different.

Marta Agnieszka T. wrote: "36. Come, Tell Me How You Live: an Archaeological Memoir by Agatha Christie - a light story about the part of the life of this author which I did not know before, her ..."

Hi Aga!! I'm a really big fan of Agatha Christie. I read that book during the summer, some years ago. It quite surprised me to read her very own words, as she didn't like to speak about her life, though she had quite an interesting one (including a mysterious episode)!

message 63: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 46. Jhereg by Steven Brust - honestly: I thought it will be worse, but it was a nice entertiment :) The only thing which was irritating me was too much humor, often added by force. Of course, in general it was cool and funny to have humor in the book, but author did overdo ;)

message 64: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 47. Predikanten by Camilla Läckberg - what a story! Author did a better foul up than in the first book. Now I'm really curious about the other books from this series.

message 65: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 48. Walczymy z bykami by Ewa Kołodziejek - something like: "We're fighting with mistakes" - a good set of small articles related with Polish language written by the specialist. It's good to remind some rules of the mother tongue + read about some issues going on in Polish since some years (like a big influence of English on Polish).

message 66: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 49. Il destino di Adhara by Licia Troisi - it was more interesting than I've expected. Even though the plot is generally really used up - still it was curiously done, with characteristic heroes. And it's ending in such a way that I can just wait impatiently for the next books ;)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 50. Dewey The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron - what a marvelous story! Cat, library, positive influence of the cat on people - great combination for a cat lover! And in addition it's written in a simple, warm, moving way. It was a really great read, it was really touching my heart and I've finished reading totally tearful!

message 68: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 51. Ksiądz Rafał. Niespokojne czasy by Maciej Grabski - I'm not objective in the case of this and previous book of this author ;) Wonderful, idealistic, positive, warm, wise story about people and life. It's an amazing read, pulling at the heartstrings. I'm really curious what the author will do now - continue the story or write something new.

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 52. Sandry's Book by Tamora Pierce - first book of a cycle about 4 kids, which have a magic capability and thanks to that they meet in one place, where they can develop their talents. Very nice read, which carry a lot of good emotions and values, which should be promoted in the literature for kids and youth. I'll read next three books with a pleasure.

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 53. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri - an interesting story related with identity, society, family, relationships. It's a good read, it convinced me to itself and to try another books of this author :)

I love Lahiri'e books, I think this is the only one that I have not read yet.

message 72: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 54. The Darkest Room by Johan Theorin - I was expecting another "typical" Swedish crime story and I've got a surprise! It's a novel with threads related with crime, love, manners. Dark, "stuffy", full of wind, snow, fear, longing, questions. I had a big surprise, until the end of reading I didn't know what to think about it.

Andrea - for me it was the first one which I've read. But we have 2 more translated into Polish, so I'll try to get them as well :)

message 73: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 55. The Iron King by Maurice Druon - very well written and very addictive story of the cause of Knights Templar and its implications for Philip IV of France and his court. I'm delighted how ably Druon created characters in this book and how - in such a short novel - he build a reach story. I really wanna read the rest of the series.

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 56. Dewey's Nine Lives: The Legacy of the Small-Town Library Cat Who Inspired Millions by Vicki Myron - it's not a "high literature", but it's a set of really bitter and interesting stories about human and cats fates, mutual relations and influences. Wonderful stories, absorbing, a bit moving, a bit funny, very true. My favorites (I don't know how the translation fits into original) are Christmas Cat and Cookie :)

message 75: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 57. Night Embrace (Dark-Hunter, #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon - very interesting story, more interesting than in the [Night Pleasures], very well intertwined real world with a world of mythology. I like the characters a lot, so I hope that in the future books they will also occur :) And even there was a bit less sex than in the previous book, what I actually count as a plus ;)

message 76: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 58. Dni ciemności by Rainer M. Schröder - an ok novella, as I would not call it novel. I see in it potential for a "bigger" novel, but just by itself is on a good level. An interesting ideas, good descriptions.
59. Love the One You're With by Emily Giffin - I think it's the worse book of this author until now. I like when characters are kindle emotions in me, but this was overkill! The main female character was acting like totally stupid! Gosh, being in such age and acting and thinking like that? It's not convincing me at all. And doing it while having Andy as a husband it's not understandable for me at all. And what even worse - not talking with him at all about her feelings and needs, wow... This all together had a result - I did not like this book almost at all.

message 77: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 60. The Bad Mother's Handbook by Kate Long - read with a pleasure. A story of fates of grandmother, mother and daughter and their lifes, interdependence, good and bad choices, love, anger, mercy, growing up, adolescence. This women survived and are surviving a lot, but still try to maneuver their lives the best possible.

message 78: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 61. Kanalia by Paweł Pollak - quite interesting first book of this author. Well, at the beginning I had impression that it's a bit crude, but then this impression disappeared. The final meeting of the policeman and the guilty one I like a lot. And the ending again brought me surprise :)

message 79: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 62. Matched by Ally Condie - I like the idea of romance in the utopian state. Condie create a world with interesting characteristics, there is pretty some diversity in relation with the construction of the Society. I wonder how it'll develop in the next two books.

I had to laugh reading your review of Love the One You're With! I have a problem with chick-lit because, very much like this book, it goes to this weird place when the main character gets herself into stupid situations and then has to dig her way out. Maybe it's just me but it seems like it's the same plot and only the details change....

message 81: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 63. The Inner Circle by Mari Jungstedt - third book about the inspector Knutas. This time a mysterious murders, archeology, robberies, gods. Good crime story, but did not arouse bigger emotions in me.

Andrea - yes, you're pretty much right about the same plot and changed details, there are many books like that. But actually I like reading them from time to time as they are most of the time relaxing read + some of them are even funny. But there are some - like this one - which are just too stupid to stand ;) Thanks God, there are many chick-lits which are actually pretty good! :D

Nothink beats chick-lit sometimes! I like it when I'm somewhere that I get distracted a lot, like at the beach with a bunch of friends.

message 83: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 64. Poczekajka by Katarzyna Michalak - it's hard to translate the title, it's a name of the village, but it's related with waiting - very nice fairy tale about love ;) It's reassuring, it's funny, in some moments naive or maybe a little silly, but so warm! It's a really good read for the moments of dejection in feeling, hump. And these animals, ZOO, gallops on black and white horses :D

Andrea - yeah, it's like that. And I also like them sometimes when I don't feel very well. And the book mentioned above is a nice "fairytale style" chick-lit :) It's a pity it's just in Polish.

I guess I won't be reading this one!...lol

message 85: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 65. ¶Ùż´Ç³ú±ð´Ú by Jakub MaÅ‚ecki - the title is a wordplay with a name of the writer [[Joseph Conrad]] - what a nutty story! Applause for the imagination, "succulent" language, combination of so called high and low culture, text full of emotions and causing emotions, very interesting and unique book. I wish it would be translated into English!

Andrea - I'm much more sorry you can't read this one than the chick-lit one ;)

message 86: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 66. Minotaur by Benjamin Tammuz - fascinating study of love, even obsession, relationships, clash of romanticism and rationalism. And in addition - through the eyes of the characters - we can see the formation of Israel. Very interesting, but sometimes a bit tiresome.

message 87: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 67. Kompozytor burz by Andres Pascual - "The Composer of Storms" - an amazing story about searching of the melody of the soul. Very interesting concept, good writing. For sure it's nothing secondary, at least not for me.

message 88: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 68. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury - I have a problem with this book. The idea for the plot is amazing - dystopia deprived of culture, where thinking is spayed, books are burned, one dimension life. But something is disturbing me in the way how it's written and I don't even know what!

message 89: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 69. 44 Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith - a bit more than an average chick-lit, but this time not "chick", but in the style of novel of manners. Is there any name in English for a easy read, bringing nothing special to you than fun? It's focusing on a few people, their life, desires, fears. Pleasant read for a short moment.

message 90: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 70. Cudze życie by Frédérique Deghelt - very interesting book about a woman, who lost her memory day-to-day. She erased 12 years of her life in this way. One day she woke up as a 25 years old young woman, who is just starting to date her partner and doesn't have any kids, at least that's what she thinks when she is waking up...

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 71. God's Mountain by Erri De Luca - I have a small chaos in my mind right now, I can't clearly write my opinion. Bewitching, lightly magic, full of life and adolescence book. It's a first book of this author which I've read, but I think it'll not be the last one.

Stacie - thanks! :)

message 93: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 72. Kara by Maja Wolny - I'm not fully convinced by this book, it's good, but while being so focused on emotions it did not arouse them in me. It's good, but without fireworks ;)

message 94: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 73. Sorry by Zoran Drvenkar - an amazing idea, great writing, driving me crazy each time when I needed to leave this book, an incredibly nutty plot, I needed to be focused while reading, great work! I hope for more books translated into Polish.

message 95: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 74. The Guardian Angel's Journal by Carolyn Jess-Cooke - another delight :) Incredible story of people and angels, a great "stepping stone" from all these "paranormal" romance and wreck angels, here angels are simply guardian angels, but it's really well constructed and written, really interesting and bitter book.

message 96: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 75. Niebo nad Maralal by Christina Hachfeld-Tapukai - "Sky above Maralal. My life as a wife of Samburu-warrior. - an interesting story of the life of a German lady who married a Samburu-warrior and moved to Kenya. Author try to be objective, to see two sides of each situation, she is curiously describing life such a different than the one she had in Germany. All the time I had a feeling that it's strange that there is almost nothing about the beginning of their common life and just now I saw that this book is a second book in the cycle ;)

message 97: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 76. Judasz całował wspaniale by Maria Papathanasopulu - "Judas was kissing great - it's really average book, but even worse - it's full of really dumb characters who droved me nuts! I don't even know how many times I wanted to through the book on the wall! ;) Clumsy style, badly written dialogues and these irritating characters it's just too much for me ;)

message 98: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 77. Hand Full Of Stars by Rafik Schami - well written story about live in Damascus. Thourgh the eyes of the teenager we can see the real life, political fights, poverty, changes of the government, but also more private things - first love, adolescence, friendship, sadness. Interesting book.

message 99: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 78. Pustynna Włócznia, ks.II by Peter V. Brett - in Polish version we have 2 parts instead of one book - really good follow-up of the first part. Brett definitely knows how to write a good and interesting fantasy books. Now, I just wonder how it'll be developed, as I can't believe it can finish like that ;)

message 100: by Agnieszka T. (new)

Agnieszka T. (enga) | 571 comments 79. Juliet by Anne Fortier - an interesting alternative story of Juliet and Romeo and also its' continuation until nowadays. It's not a "high literature", but I read it with pleasure, it gave me a good entertainment.
