It's tough, but I also found the main character very inspiring.

I haven't read Garp yet, but I have loved every Irving book that I have read.

I've never read anything by Irving, but for some reason DH read GARP. I can't remember why, but I remember him saying how much better it was than the movie. I don't think I've ever seen the movie either.


Now that is a shared book memory hard to top!

Loved Lonesome Dove. Later I bought the dvd. It's one of my all time favorites.
BTW, McMurtry lives in Archer City, Texas. Many years ago he bought most of the buildings in the town square and opened used book stores. I got a chance to see him one time there. He does not do autographs, he doesn't like to be disturbed.
