Stacey What's on your list this week?

I'm about 50pgs into Left Neglected by Lisa Genova and really liking it. I also have The Stormchasers by Jenna Blum and Paper, Scissors, Death by Joanna Campbell Slan going.

message 2: by Theresa (new)

Theresa I've been reading Great House but I can't say that I'm crazy about it yet.

message 3: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jml_417) I have had a little bit of attention deficit lately with reading. I'm still working on Bel Canto and The Women's Room, and picked up The Complete Fairy Tales of Brothers Grimm, Volume 1 which I started back in May (actually, my version is V. 1 & 2 together but I can't find that copy right now when I do a search). To top things off, I started Science, Sense & Nonsense last night.

It will be interesting to see what I actually finish this week.

message 4: by Dannielle (new)

Gretchen, I saw this morning you were reading The Chisellers and when I went to the library this afternoon there it was. I didn't know it was a sequel until I got home. I guess I didn't read your whole post, lol.

You probably don't have to read the first. It's a light, funny, sweet quick read. Nice to break up some more heavy and/or lengthy reads.

Good to hear, I'm looking forward to both!

message 21: by Dannielle (new)

Dannielle Insalaco | 51 comments Forget Names of the Dead...I couldn't bear a Vietnam War tale even if it was written by one of my favorite authors! I'm going through my TBR shelves...Bel Canto, maybe?

I'm enthralled - it's a short novel, 197 pages. An older woman (40!) is accused of killing her 20 year old lover.

The writing is so elegant ..... "Gladys may have been older and in decline, but she was still beautiful. Time had touched her reluctantly, with a careful, gentle hand".

OH NO - I'm over 40 - does that mean I'm in decline?!?lol

message 26: by Annika (new)

Annika I'm almost finished with Tyrannasaur Canyon by Douglas Preston. I'm enjoying it and learning more about the theories of the extinction of dinosaurs:) Next I'll be continuing Nemesis by Jo Nesbo.

That was my first reaction, too, Annika!

message 28: by Stacey (new)

Stacey I have 100pgs left in Left Neglected and Stormchasers....I don't want to do anything for the rest of the night but read!

message 29: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 67 comments I just got freedom by Jonathan Franzen - only on the second chapter.

message 30: by Elise (new)

Elise I just finished a lovely historical novel, The Calligrapher's Daughter. The story takes place in the first half of the 20th century in Korea. It reminded me a lot of Snow Flower--maybe not quite as good, but I loved learning about Korean culture and history--a subject I knew nothing of!

Now, what should I read next?

message 31: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 67 comments I am hosting book club at my house this week. The host picks the book, cooks dinner, and buys the wine.

Anyway, I selected The dragon House, by John Shors. It is a book about the children in present day Vietnam. I wanted a book that had a great story, not too long, and as a bonus, the author lives in Colorado. John Shors donated proceeds from the sale of this book to a charity that provides for street children in Vietnam.

I really loved the Lotus Eaters, a great Vietnam story - but it is longer, and sometimes the book club gals don't finish the longer books.

Elise, I think you would love both of these reads based in Southeast Asia.

Theresa Andrea wrote: "I just got freedom by Jonathan Franzen - only on the second chapter."

How is it so far, Andrea? I do want to read it (I liked The Corrections) but probably won't get to it until this summer.

message 33: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 67 comments it is starting slow - but I will keep on.

I loved The Dragon House! Good choice for bookclub :) I can't wait to hear how it goes.

message 35: by Annika (new)

Annika I really liked Dragon House too. Great choice:) What are you going to serve for dinner?

message 36: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 67 comments butternut squash bisque, salad, bread, 2 kinds of wine, and birthday cake (one of the gals is turning 50)

message 37: by Elise (new)

Elise Thanks, Andrea! I now have Dragon House and Lotus Eaters on my ever-toppling TBR pile!

message 40: by Stacey (new)

Stacey I'm finishing up The Millionaires by Brad Meltzer; it's good. I'm on about pg 50 of Paper, Scissors, Death by Joanna Campbell Slan; I'm really liking it. Reading time has taken a back seat while my daughter is visiting.

message 41: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Andrea- how did bookclub go? Did everyone like the book? Any favorite parts?
