Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) I can't be the only person who thinks the Thorndyke stories - with their in-depth descriptions of scientific method - are streets ahead of Sherlock Holmes. So why is Holmes so much more famous...? There are plenty of similarities, and Thorndyke exhibits many of the characteristics Holmes is famous for, but in more detail and with the addition of seeming to be a nice person.

I'd love to know what you think, and to meet any other huge Thorndyke fangirls :)

Rachel

Jan C (woeisme) | 38624 comments I just started reading a Thorndyke story.

The main reason I picked it up was that I remembered that Lord Peter and Harriet Wimsey used to refer to Dr. Thorndyke (Dorothy Sayers).

I'm not that far into it yet though.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Oooh, I love Thorndyke mysteries and agree that, with their detail, they make the solution to "who dunnit" a little more credible than some of the Holmes tales.

*grrrr* yet another stash of books to put on TBR. Thanks Rachel!

;-) Just kidding, really!

Jan C: I had missed that reference. Perhaps I thought he was a fictitious author. When I discovered that the author that Harriet was forever trying to write a paper about, Sheridan Le Fanu, was a real person I was shocked!

Jan C (woeisme) | 38624 comments I thought it was made up and then I was browsing kindle books and I came across a mention of Dr. Thorndyke and remembered there being references to him in the Wimsey books.

Of course, lately I have been reading Dr. Fell stories and was reading a mystery that referred to Dr. Fell. So I was kind of prepared for Dr. Thorndyke to be a character.

Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) LOL, sorry Hayes! On the plus side you can get loads of them free from Project Gutenberg. Feel free to return the favour, I'm always looking for recommendations :)
