Hey, it's time to nominate for the next group read. Yeah, yeah, it's early but this way we'll have time to get the book.

Any member can nominate 2 books that are connected to fairy tales in one of the following ways (1) a retelling (2) a traditional collection (3) a modern fairy tale or influenced by fairy tales (4) criticism or history of any of the above.

It is the The Twelve Dancing Princesses told by the shoemaker's apprentice.

Melissa I'm going to nominate The Bloody Chamber. I already have a copy coming through the mail!

Though, Beauty really is a must-read.

Deb Omnivorous Reader I am going to nominate The Phoenix Dance because the twelve dancing princesses is a story that has always rocked my boat.
I just hope I can get ahold of a copy in Brisbane.

Great choice Melissa! I really enjoy reading Angela Carter's re-tellings of fairy tales and fantastical legends; a group discussion would be wonderful. I'll definitely be voting for this collection.

Nominations are closed.

Tia (tianevitt) Beauty is not available digitally. :( I'll have to go to the library and find it because I'd like to participate in this group read.

Melissa Wow, I am very surprised that Beauty is not available as an e-book. I didn't even think to look because I just assumed it would be. Good luck finding it at the library-- I'm sure it will be there, at least!

Sue Bowling (sueannbowling) | 2 comments I have the 30-year old paperback--liked it the first time I read it and still do. Went back and read the Perrault story on-line last night, and I already have some things to say. Can anyone suggest retellings of this story between Perrault and McKinley?

Sue,

Check out .

You might also check the French salon writers, the women, for I think McKinley is drawing more on them than Perrault. My favorite version of the story is the Green Serpent.

You might try Five Old Friends which has a B and B story in it. On the group's bookselves, there is a Beauty and the Beast shelf.

Deb Omnivorous Reader :( I won't be joining this read. All the copys of Beauty are out of the library (maybe some of this group are in Brissie?) and the three bookstores in my area don't carry it.

message 13: by Mawgojzeta (new)

Mawgojzeta | 240 comments I just picked up my copy from the library and will commence (re)reading it after the weekend.

I actually was able to find a PDF version of the book. I'm not posting the link because I'm not sure if it is above board if you know what I mean. I input Robin McKinley Beauty ebook in Bing search engine and it came up.

Melissa I feel your pain, Ideiosepius. I have to order most of the books I read. (Unless they are available on the Kindle.) I've nearly given up on going to bookstores, when I'm looking for something specific. :(
