Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I'm not going to join in on the read of Shadow & Claw because I have way too much other reading to do. I did read the first book of the Book of the Long Sun series about 25 years ago and just wasn't into it enough to finish the series. However, I did like the way the science fiction was hidden in a fantasy-like setting.

What other books have this blend of science fiction and fantasy? Off the top of my head, I can think of the Samaria series by Sharon Shinn. That's actually a 3-way blend of science fiction, fantasy and romance.

And most anything by Christopher Stasheff.

I loved Lord of Light, I read it long after reading the Amber books though but it definitely has that science fiction/fantasy blend.

Tamahome | 7136 comments I believe The Steel Remains has a mix (of a lot of things).

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments A Plague of Angels and the sequel The Waters Rising by Sheri S. Tepper. Warning: I'm of the opinion that the blending in these two books was ridiculous at times, but definitely all there.

A little ridiculous can be a good thing sometimes.

I barely remember them (read some in jr. high) but Piers Anthony's Apprentice Adept series had this mix.

Robert Silverberg's Majipoor series had it too - at least the mix of feudal setting, fantasy trappings with high technology, but I don't remember if there was a belief in magic in it.

Kris (kvolk) Zelanzy also had a small series of 2 books I believe called the madwand series that was a direct blend of science and magic as the story is based on the conflict between 2 people who use those opposing philosophies in their struggle.

Yes I vaguely remember these books, they had to do with two worlds and science vs magic iirc.

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments A couple more that come to mind are Perdido Street Station by China Mieville (along with his other Bas-Lag books) and The Practice Effect by David Brin.

Philip (heard03) | 383 comments I recently listened to Lamentation by Ken Scholes, which had a nice mixture of SF & F. Pretty cool world building in that book, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series: Canticle.

I realized Jack Vance's Dying Earth, one of the earliest sci-fi/fantasy mixes and a big inspiration for Book of the New Sun, isn't on this list yet.

The whole Council Wars series is pretty awesome, they've turned me into a Ringo fan just in general.

Tyrone (28daysearlier) If you like a little science in your fantasy (or visa-versa) then you can't go far wrong with Lawrence Watt-Evans and his two war surplus novels;
The Cyborg and the Sorcerers and The Wizard and the War Machine.

I would also recommened the Battle Circle Trilogy byPiers Anthony which comprises of Sos the Rope, Var the Stick and Neq the Sword.Battle Circle

Michele | 1154 comments The Warlock in Spite of Himself and all it's sequels, by Christopher Stasheff. A man from a futuristic society lands his spaceship on a planet where a bunch of people from the Society for Creative Anachronism have migrated and set up a medieval monarchy, and a bunch of them have esp abilities but are considered witches and warlocks.

There is a lot of politics, since he is there to steer them towards a democracy of some kind, but also they are fun.

Phil | 1427 comments The Pern series by Ann McCaffrey, the Swords series by Fred Saberhagen and The High Crusade by Poul Anderson all fit the bill.
