I always hear Tom and Veronica say they are reading one book while listening to another. I also notice quite a few members with several books in progress. I always assumed this would be too confusing for me and I would lose track of one or the other story.

Recently I've been forced to try it. I was in the middle of the Shadow & Claw when my hold on the libraries copy of Ender's Game audio book came up. Since it's only a 10 day loan I had to start listening right away.

What I've found is surprising. I'm perfectly able to keep the stories straight, but I keep finding myself asking what the other main character would do in this situation. That is I keep imagining Ender in the Shadow and the Claw's world and how he would've immediately started to manipulate the other characters .

Has anyone else ever experienced something similar? It's almost like a book mash-up if you will.

I've never had any problem keeping any number of books straight as I read them; I currently have 6 or 7 on the go. But your mental book mashup thing sounds pretty cool. That has never happened to me, and it's kind of a shame!

I rarely read more than one book at a time, unless as I get a book from the library that I've really been anticipating, then I'll put one down in favor of another.

Now that I'm reviewing more books for my blog, I've sometimes been reading one "real" (dead tree) book and a different ebook on my NookColor (NC shoutout!) at the same time.

I don't like to read more than one at a time as I've noticed I sometimes get the stories confused as I start back into one or the other, but once I'm in, I get back into the story rather quickly.

I usually read one book either in print or Kindle format and listen to another book in audio at any given time. I've found that I can keep the stories separate if I listen to two different genres. However, if I listen to two fantasy books, I'll get them confused.

I usually have one print, one ebook and one audiobook going at a time. I find it's best not to have two similar books going. It far better to have each in a different genre.

I used to think it would be too confusing also, but it's really not. I liken it to following multiple TV series, just different stories that I can start and stop without having a hard time keeping up. Library loans forced me to do it also, plus the fact my last dead tree book took about 9 months to finish.

Short attention span, here. I tend to have several books and audiobooks going at once, depending on and my mood and where I am. No more problem keeping them straight than I do the regular details of my life (ha-ha).

At any given time I'm usually reading 3 books: an audiobook, a Kindle book, and my assigned book from English Lit. Its usually very easy to keep them straight, but currently I'm reading The Eye of the World (first time WoT reader), along with Shadow & Claw. These two are strangely similar, and I've been getting the characters mixed up a lot. (Rand and Severian, Nynaeve and Agia, Egwene and Thecla) Sometimes I'll forget which world has technology as magic versus actual magic as well.

I tend to have two books going at once. Normally I have one non-fiction, one fiction going. It helps keeps thing apart. I also will start/stop books over a long period too.

One book, one ebook for me. I also tend to read them at different times of the day, so keeping the story straight is relatively easy because my brain goes into bedtime book mode at night.

For a few years I would also have a dailylit book coming in via email. After I finally finished Count of Monte Cristo that way I gave it up. Took way too long!

I can't read just one book at once. I read based on what mood I'm in. :)

I used to have a horrible habit of always starting more books while I was half-way through others, so I'd end up reading five or so at a time, and two would fall by the wayside and then be picked up later, very messy. ;)

Now I read two books at once at the most. Sometimes one fiction and one non-fiction, like Larry.

I also fit this mold, one print and one audio at a time, although the print book is sometimes non-fiction. Right now I am reading Gridlocked and listening to the Name of the Wind.

Wow I'm currently reading/listening to six books. I really need to do something about my attention span.....

And here I am thinking that my reading (2 books only!) is interfering with my Words With Friends and iOS Carcassone time!!!! ;)

How some of you can read so many at once is something I just marvel at. But goes to show...some people can, some people can't. Same way audiobooks work as well if not better for some than print, some people can't do audio at all.

Had to dive into the vault for this one. I was wondering what other people do. I have been reading fantasy and listen to sci-fi. That way I don't confuse the stories. More than 2 books and I take too long to finish them. Intersting Thanks!

Yeah, I think I am reading through 7 book right now... no attention span here. But I've not had problems keeping them straight if they are different enough. For example, I wouldn't read two books by the same author at once or two Arthurian books, etc.

I don't like audiobooks much so I rarely listen to them, but otherwise I either read in print or on my iPad... sometimes I forget the format of a book and keep looking for a print copy of an ebook, though. :)

I can't read more than one book at a time, and frankly i don't want to.
I stomp my foot and pull my tongue at the modern world and say i will read my dead tree book, one at a time.
But to get nowadays the opportunity to read several book and such wide range of support, it is really cool. People say that people don't read anymore....they should just add up what all of you are reading !!

I will usually start 3 or more books at once, and see what catches my mood best. Then I will usually marathon that book to completion. Then I will go back to the 2 i left off and 1 more and do it again. Mind you both series books and research books can and do throw off my rhythm.

Like most people here I read one book and listen to a different one. If everyone was like us then I guess Whispersync would be a pointless service :)

Do you mean listen to an audiobook and read a real book simultaneously ..... I bow down to your multitasking ability :)

I seem to have 5 on the go usually. One fiction, one non-fiction dead tree; one fiction, one non-fiction e-book and then one audiobook as well. I'm not sure if podcasts count but I listen to a lot of history ones so I guess you could add a non-fiction one to the audio section too.
