Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments I was wondering if someone is going to head the next reading challenge. It is now March and it seems like discussion should start soon.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Is anyone interested in running our next reading challenge? The job can be split up among a couple of people if you want it to.

We can come up with ideas for tasks as a group if nobody wants to take it on alone, but if we could find a single readerboard/point keeper that'd be helpful.

Anyone willing?

message 3: by Amy (new)

Amy What exactly does it involve? I'd be interested but not sure what I'd have to do.

message 4: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Amy, I'd be happy to help you, if you want. I just make a spreadsheet to keep track of people and points which is really the hardest part. It might make it better if someone could keep track of the board and just send a summary to the point keeper.

In any case, the first thing is to ask people to give ideas on the tasks! Anybody have some suggestions? Would you like to keep it alphabetical? Or would you prefer some/all specific tasks?

message 5: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm good with "attempting" to run the next challenge, but you all will have to bear with me as I figure it out. If no one else steps up then I"ll do it.

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) We've had two alphabetical open-ended ones now. I think that I'll be ready for a clear ending again!

I think the themed sections are fun myself.

Amy, did you have something in mind?

message 7: by Amy (last edited Mar 08, 2011 07:33AM) (new)

Amy I have no clue where to start so please everyone, what type of theme or challenge would you like to see? Maybe something we have done before? I do agree that I like the closed ending so it will be a definite start/end date. I'll have to look at the calendar when I get home tonight and I can start posting the challenge and we can comment and get it planned. I really want this to be a group effort and have everyone participate in something they will enjoy!

Lydia.........I would LOVE the help! Thanks for the offer. Maybe we can message each other and get some plan going.

message 8: by Karis (new)

Karis Jacobstein (yalitwit) | 419 comments I have an idea. Title challenge, with a twist...

Example:

April:

A: Across the Universe
P: Pretties
R: Red Glove
I: Incarceron
L: Life As We Knew It

May:

M: Matched
A: Absolutely Maybe
Y: You Know You Love Me

June:

J: Jinx
U: Unwind
N: Need
E: Elsewhere

With bonus points like the current challenge?

message 9: by Amy (new)

Amy Wow, I like that! That's a great starting point. If no one objects, I'll take that idea and add some point values and work on it a bit and then repost for some discussion. Obviously the challenge would be open to read which ever book fits the letter. Let me work on it some.

message 10: by Angela Sunshine (last edited Mar 08, 2011 01:03PM) (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I like that idea too! Good thinkin' Karis.

Maybe add holiday related challenges for those months too?

April has April Fool's Day and Earth Day
May has May Day and Mother's Day
June has Flag Day, Father's Day and Summer Solstice

(I tried to avoid the religious holidays, but we don't have to!)

Plus that website has all kinds of crazy holidays we could use.

The only thing that I would hate to see go from our challenges is how we require (or give bonus points for) posting about the books we read. I think it's a great way for our discussions to stay fresh and keep people chatting.

message 11: by Amy (new)

Amy Would you guys prefer me just listing out holidays that would be included in the challenge for each month? Or do we want anything goes as long as it fits the first letter of each month? I"ll post a framework for the challenge later tonight or tomorrow. Keep the thoughts coming!

message 12: by Angela Sunshine (last edited Mar 08, 2011 03:17PM) (new)

I was thinking we could do both.

"For section one:
Read a book that's title begins with each letter that spells out A-P-R-I-L. (5 pts each)

Read a book that falls under the humor genre in honor of April Fool's Day. (10 pts)

Read a book with a picture of the earth on the cover or the word "Earth" in the title in honor of Earth Day. (15 pts) "

Those are just quick examples, but something like that maybe?

I like the spelling of the months. Don't forget we have the on-going challenge and you could incorporate that or "steal" some holiday ideas from us (we don't mind ;).

Amy DRAFT: April to June Challenge
(everything subject to change)
Some of this was taken from previous challenges so feel free to tell me what you like, don't like, would like to add. I put in about one holiday/celebration book per month but I have a huge list of them so we can add two per month if you guys want.

1. The challenge will begin on April 1 at 12:00am local time and will end on June 30 at 11:59pm.
2. All books must be YA or Juvenile Fiction.
3. All books must be at least 100 pages or more in length.
4. Re-reads count.
5. Audio books and electronic books, such as Kindle count but page counts will be according to what Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has on their site.

April to June Challenge

1. Spell out each letter of the month (ex. A-P-R-I-L; book titles must begin with each letter of the month; ex. A-Amazing Grace, P-Pirates,etc).
2. There are no limits to how many books you can read for each letter. Person with the most points wins!
3. We can change the rules as needed if certain letters are harder to find titles for. Please message me or post and we can figure it out as we go.

Point Value (this is in no certain order so we can rework this).

50 point bonus for finishing the entire challenge
5 points for each letter (first book)
3 points for each additional book per letter
5 points per genre (each may only be used once. I will post the accepted genres that we've used in previous challenges)
10 points for each book that fits the specified day/holiday/celebration

The challenge:

Part 1: April
Read one book for each letter of the month of April.
Read a book that celebrates the Earth.

Part 2: May
Read one book for each letter of the month of May.
Read a book that has a flower name in it's title.

Part 3: June
Read one book for each letter of the month of June.
Read a book that has best friends (any gender) as the main characters.

I was really hoping for a more closed challenge (I like to know when I am done), but I think I may be outvoted on this one ;-P

Ooo, I really like that idea! I might actually take up the challenge this round. Though I may not be very competitive.

message 17: by Amy (last edited Mar 08, 2011 06:05PM) (new)

Amy I'm definitely not competitve Cassie. I'm just thrilled whenever I can finish one book for the challenge. I always seem to have a way of getting off track. But it's still fun.

Kellee...what do you mean by a closed challenge? I thought it was pretty cut and dry but we can still make changes. It's a draft. :-)

message 18: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mldavisreads) | 210 comments I think Kellee means a definite number of maximum points. Instead of being able to read as many books as you want and get at least 3 points for each book, there is a maximum number of points you can get. Several of the challenges were done this way, including #6 I believe.

message 19: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) The May challenge with "a flower name in the title" sounds really difficult. Could it maybe be change to a (prominent) flower on the cover?

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm open to changing it however you guys want, but we don't want it to be too simple. I will go ahead and tweak the flower one and then maybe work on the point system to be more definite. Is that better Kellee? I'll repost the draft with changes later today.

message 21: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Kahlan wrote: "The May challenge with "a flower name in the title" sounds really difficult. Could it maybe be change to a (prominent) flower on the cover?"

It's not that difficult really. Just this year I've read Rose Sees Red and Nightshade, and I'm currently reading Briar Rose.

Also, there's a listopia list for the topic here. http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/60...

message 22: by Jennifer W, WT Moderator (new)

Jennifer W | 1289 comments Mod
It looks really good, Amy, but I have 2 questions: Do the holidays have to fit within the letters of the month? For example, Angela above mentioned Briar Rose, but none of the months contain a "B," so could we not use it?

Typically our challenges involve reading about 25 books, our letters only make 12. Perhaps include "SPRING" and "SUMMER" or whatever other words you can think of? Or do we want a shorter challenge?

I'd pictured the holidays to be in addition to reading books for the letters, so they wouldn't have to be a certain letter.

Not to keep harping on a certain subject, but I think it's good to have some tasks be more difficult. If you have to stretch to find a book to read for a task, maybe that will broaden your horizons, right?

BTW, I found about 10 more books on my to be read list that will fit for flower in the title. (There are moon flowers, angel flowers, star flowers...)

message 25: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Yeah, I meant one more like this: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3...
I like knowing when I am done, but if not this challenge, that's fine- just throwing in my 2 cents :) Everyone seems happy with it and I am happy if everyone else is happy.

message 26: by Amy (new)

Amy For the themed challenges (ex. read a book with a flower name, it doesn't have to fit the month name. They are two separate parts.

So I did some tweaking, making it a little longer and more closed. See if you guys like DRAFT Two better. If you all would like me to add SPRING and SUMMER instead of what I have added, I'm fine with that.

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Amy,
I admire how you developed this challenge. Having a finite number of points makes it MUCH easier to keep track of.

I do think adding genre's to these tasks might make it difficult to keep track of, but what do people think?

Words like "The" "A" "An" could be excluded from the titles which would provide some leeway in locating particular books. Or maybe just "The".

I think this looks excellent. Can you pick a specific date you want to post the rules by? That way, people can start developing their reading lists.

Excellent work, y'all!!!

When I offered the idea up, I assumed "A", "An", and "The" would be excluded just as they are in the library catalog.

Just as an FYI... For May, "Y" was difficult to find books for. I had a hard time finding a YA title for the example even. That was the only one though...

message 32: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) I definitely think we should exclude "A", "An" and "The" like before. More options that way, for sure.

What do you think we should do about the "Y"? I have 5 books that begin with Y on my to be read list, but that's not many. On the other hand, I'd hate to say read a book with Y in the title because that seems TOO easy...

Maybe title that starts with Y or author's name (first or last) that starts with Y? I have 8 authors whose last name begins with Y.

We could always post our finds here to help others.

message 33: by Amy (new)

Amy We could keep the genres as as bonus points maybe?

I agree with excluding A, An and The. Thanks for mentioning that. I didn't think about it.

I will post the final rules by March 20th. That way people can start developing their lists.

Since Y is hard, it can be anywhere in the title, but must be present. It won't matter if we have one "easy" task. :-)

Thanks for the compliments. Glad you all like the challenge. I enjoyed creating it!

message 34: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Hi Amy,

Loving this idea and how it's changed so far. But I just had one question...

For the month challenges are they open only in that month or can you read say May's books in April and vice versa?

You can do it either way, but I was just curious how you wanted to run it.

I love challenges and am sad to see mine ending so soon. :)

message 35: by Amy (new)

Amy I think we'll just leave them open that way if people want to skip around they can. I know I like to do that.

I've enjoyed your challenge Kristen. I was so proud that I made it past a hundred points. On other challenges I've gotten sidetracked.

message 36: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Just one other thought -- About "A" and "An" -- of ten these are crucial to the title and the next word often won't begin with A. Should we allow those for the A -- there are only 2. Definitely we should exclude "The".

What do you think?

message 37: by Amy (last edited Mar 11, 2011 02:45PM) (new)

Amy Okay everyone. Here's DRAFT Three, to discuss. I made a couple of changes that we've been talking about, but no major tweaks. Final challenge rules to be posted on March 20, 2011. That gives everyone time to make their lists and such (if you are a planner). I wanted to bold the changes, but apparently I can't do that. So here's the new changes, basically added to the rules regarding A/An/The, genre points and the letter Y in the title.

DRAFT: April to June Challenge
(everything subject to change)

6. For the letter A, you may A/An ONE time. After you have used it, please omit it from the rest of the titles. The does not count in the title, so omit those. For example, The Julian Game would just count as "Julian Game."
7. For letter Y, it would be preferable to read a book STARTING with Y, but if you can't find one, a Y anywhere in the title is acceptable.

April to June Challenge

1. Spell out each letter of the month (ex. A-P-R-I-L; book titles must begin with each letter of the month; ex. A-Amazing Grace, P-Pirates,etc).

message 38: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments So, I know that in the rules it says you can still read as many of the spell the letter books as you want, but I was wondering if you wanted to include that for the other parts as well or just for spelling the month or not at all.

So if I wanted to read more than one humorous book.. etc. Just curious. Or does that nead to be taken out since it says a total points for each month?

message 39: by Amy (new)

Amy If you guys want to be able to read more than one book, we can do maybe five points for each additional?

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Amy, like this last challenge, I think we might like to keep the genre list to one entry only (otherwise it is going to get REALLY complicated to keep track of) for 5 pts. Rather, like this past challenge, there are 3 pts for reading a book which starts with the same letter, instead of 5 (but I guess that really doesn't make much of a difference).

I like the way you handled the A and An thing!

Oh, and just for those who want to participate, it is always helpful if you just say you're going to ahead of time, so your names are put in the tally sheet. It's also fun to list booklists so others can get hints or ideas.

Amy, you've done a great job!! Can I state how they might want to make their entries so it would be easier to keep track of?

message 42: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Just to clarify for the A/An issue, I could use the book A Wrinkle in Time for the letter A, but then I couldn't use the book A Swiftly Tilting Planet for the second A, correct?

message 43: by Lydia (last edited Mar 12, 2011 07:18PM) (new)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments I was just going to suggest that we clarify statement 6. Since there are no T's in the months, we don't need to say anything about "The".

#6: "A" and "An" in a book title can only be used once for either April or May.

It would also help, Amy, if we listed the additional challenges for each month as 1(a); 1(b), 1(c) , 2(a), etc. Just makes it cleaner for keeping track.

I would also like to put the genres in alphabetical order and numbered.
1-Action/Adventure
2-Classic
3-Dystopian (etc.)
4-Fantasy
5-Folk tales
6-Graphic
7-Historical
8-Horror
9-Humor
10-LGBT
11-Manga
12-Multicultural
13-Mystery
14-Nonfiction
15-Paranormal
16-Poetry
17-Realistic fiction
18-Religious
19-Romance
20-Sci-fi/Fantasy
21-Short stories
22-Sports
23-War

Then people can just designate a genre by number.

Do you all want to keep track of the number of pages? I like knowing how may pages I read in 3 months. What do you all think?

Then when you post, you would list the book title and author; date you finished [that helps us look back if we have to find something we didn't notice] on one line; number of pages.

Then for points you would list Letter of the month or additional letter; challenge completed; genre.

We might want to say that books completed on the last day of the month should please be entered by the 2nd day of the month so we can post a monthly summary [in addition to a biweekly summary if people would like).

So, could you all let me know if this stuff would be okay?

message 44: by Amy (new)

Amy I will definitely add one book per genre. I thought I had it in there but maybe not.

Lydia.......any helpful hints you have please feel free to share them! I love having help!

Angela....you're correct. A Wrinkle in Time would count for the first A but not the second. But the second book you mentioned could count for the S (b/c we are taking off a/an/the).

Okay I will do another cut and paste and tweak the rules, plus use Lydia's genres (so nicely organized and numbered). I have family in town this weekend so I don't think I'll get to the changes until late tomorrow night. Unless I have some extra time in the morning.

Thanks everyone for helping to build this challenge. You ladies are awesome!

5. Audio books and electronic books, such as Kindle count but page counts will be according to what Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has on their site.

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments Amy, you can eliminate the genre numbers -- I was working late on the spreadsheet and probably got a bit rummy. I can use the numbers, but the participants don't need to worry about them.

You have done a great job! Think I'll get to work on my booklist! Yippee!

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) A couple questions:

1)So each additional task (letter or holiday) are worth 5 points, correct?

2)Would something post apocalyptic where they miss the Earth as it is today count as celebrating the Earth?

3)If not, have any ideas for that challenge?

4)Also, would a book that is about 1962 here in America count for June d? Countdown by Deborah Wiles

5)I'm trying to figure out somewhere to put Specials by Scott Westerfeld- any ideas?

6)Will you count mythology as religious genre?

7)Would a book about a kid with only a beat up bike and no car count towards May d?

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) A couple things about the genres too: Folk and Fairy should be one and Sci fi shouldn't include fantasy because it is already a genre :)

Amy Lydia........I'll just leave the numbers. But ladies, when you do your scoring, just type in the genre you're using. Don't worry about the numbers!

Kellee.....when I post the final challenge rules, I"ll fix the genres. I originally had folk/fairy tales together and didn't notice when I cut and pasted that there were differences. You're correct on your scoring for additional books. As for the Earth task, as long as it has something to do with earth (besides living on it I mean) it would count. Anything celebrating America, no matter the time frame counts for June d. I would put Specials in Sci/Fi since there's a ton of technology that tends to be futuristic. For may d, any transportation is fine. Bikes are legitimate.

What do you all think about Mythology counting for religious?

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Thanks Amy!!!

Let me know what the consensus is for mythology/religious.

For Specials, though, I need to find a task that it can fit into... any ideas?
