Divergent works.

You can read any science fiction book by a female author, it doesn't need to be on the lists.

City of Bones sounds more like fantasy than science fiction to me. If there is a real science fiction element (such as a piece of technology that the characters use) I may reconsider. But I'm trying to keep this task to science fiction only.

Bright of the Sky sounds like a great choice - and I've added it to my TBR.

Yes to:
The Dead-Tossed Waves
Life As We Knew It
Across the Universe

Deadtown and Dark Descendant sound more like paranormal/fantasy to me so they don't work. Pegasus and the Flame seems like straight fantasy/mythology, so it won't work either.
The Better Part of Darkness is a tough one. It sounds to me like fantasy/paranormal, but 3 users have it shelved as science fiction> aliens and the blurb references an alternate dimension. If the book does indeed contain aliens and/or alternate dimensions are explored (these must be true alternate dimensions in relation to the book or our reality, not just another "fantasy" world that is different from ours) I'll take it, but you may need to read the book to find out if it fits. Maybe someone here has read it already and can chime in?

I'm considering steampunk as science fiction for this task, so it works."
I'm glad to hear you'll accept steampunk, as Carriger's fourth book is coming out in July.

Don't worry, the 4 you approved gives me plenty to work with! Thanks for your help x

Yep, definitely acceptable.

Yep! This one is also on my TBR, so let me know if it's good!

Would Troubling a Star by Madeleine L'Engle work? She's on the sci fi list but I can't tell from the description if it's one of her sci fi books. Thanks for your help!

In addition to the Seasonal Reading Challenge, I have my own personal ongoing quest to read as much science fiction as possible written by female authors. Women don't get much publicity in this genre, and as a result they are highly underrepresented, but since I've started looking I have discovered some fantastic novels that compare with and even surpass the male-dominated classics.
For this task, join me on my mission and read a science fiction novel written by a female author. The genre "Science Fiction" should appear on the book’s home page. If you need help, here is a great list: Science Fiction Books by Female Authors I have also compiled a shelf for my own reference, which you can feel free to browse: Female Sci-Fi
