Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Alright here is the official tasks for the next reading challenge!

1. The Challenge begins at 12:00 A.M. local time on July 1, 2011 and ends at 11:59 P.M. local time on September 30, 2011.
2. This Challenge is just for fun, so make sure you enjoy yourself and all the books you will be reading!
3. All books must be classified as Young Adult or Juvenile Fiction, unless otherwise noted in the task. If you local library classifies the book you chose as such, then the book may be included.
4. All books must be at least 100 pages long to count for any of the tasks, unless otherwise noted in the task.
5. Re-reads count, unless otherwise noted in the task.
6. Audio books and electronic books (unabridged), such as Kindle, all count for this Challenge. Page counts will be according to the Good Reads page count.

I will be rewarding prizes, not sure how many yet. I have a stack of books I need to get rid of.

Involve Yourself Section
1.05 Read any book discussed in one of the discussion threads here at Wild Things, and contribute to the discussion.
1.10 Read one of the group reads chosen during July, August, or September and contribute to the discussion.
1.15 Read a book rated 5 stars by a Wild Things member and in your review discuss why you selected the book and why you agree or disagree with the other member’s rating, then share it when you post for points.
1.20 Read a book from the WT Top Novel list and discuss why you think it should or should not be on the list.
1.25 Read two books from the same YA or MG series.

2.20 Read an honor or winner of the Newbery Medal.
2.25 Read both a winner and nominee of the National Book Award from the same year.

* For the award section, when you post points, let us know if you thought the book deserved the award, honor or nomination and why.

5.15 Read a book from one of the high school reading lists in your area. (Can be non-YA)

5.25 Read a book that one of your teachers from your school days recommended. (Can be non-YA)

Extra points:

*For 2 points per book you may read multiple books that fit any of the challenges after you've completed that specific challenge. (So, if you want to read both group reads for July, the first would count for 10 points, the second would could for 2 points).

***Genre Points Bonus***

The whole goal of the challenges is to get you to pick up something new and different. So, for each different genre you read, you will earn 5 points. This is only available once per genre. Only one genre can be claimed per book. (i.e. you can't claim both paranormal and romance for Twilight.) Check out our discussion boards to find some books in other genres that may fit into your A-Z!

Here's a list of the genres we'll accept for this challenge:

Action/Adventure
Classic
Dystopian/Apocalyptic/Post-Apocolyptic
Fantasy/Supernatural
Graphic Novel
Historical Fiction
Horror/Thriller/Suspense
Humor
Manga
Mystery
Nonfiction

Any questions, leave below. Thanks!

message 2: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Does the number next to each category signify how many points it is worth or are they all worth the same amount?

message 3: by Amy (new)

Amy Thanks for asking Stef cause I was curious too!

message 4: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Yep. If the task is 1.15 the that means it is in section 1 and is worth 15 points.

message 5: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Yes, Kellee is correct. :)

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments I need to review the task and rules but I'm in. So glad to finally have time to read again. The last two months were crazy.

message 7: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Would Ashfall work for 4.10? In the book, his family goes on vacation, but he is home alone when the Yellowstone supervolano erupts. So... technically during a vacation ;)

message 8: by Amy (new)

Amy Also, would Starcrossed work for task 4.20?

message 9: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Where would I find the WT Top Novel List for challenge 1.20?

Also, does someone have a five-star book recommendation for me for challenge 1.15?

Thanks!

message 10: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Stef- I have a link underneath that section that should take you right to the list. Also, I highly recommend Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier. Amazing book involving some time travel, romance and secrets.

Kellee, I'd accept Ashfall.

Amy, I'd accept Starcrossed.

message 11: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Ohhh I see it now. Duh. Haha. And I will definitely look into Ruby Red. Thank you!

message 12: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Stef- I recommend Hunger Games, Knife of Never Letting Go or Divergent if you haven't read any of them.
&
Thanks Kristen! :)

message 13: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie I read Hunger Games and Divergent but I will check out Knife of Never Letting Go. Thank you!

message 14: by Amy (new)

Amy I just finished Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. I marked it as five stars! I loved it! I know now that it's the first in the series so I'm really excited!

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Just curious...how do we know if something has been rated a 5 star by a WT member unless if they are part of the challenge and know their name?

message 16: by Emily (new)

Emily You can go to the WT home page and scroll down to the bottom and just click on random people and look through their books. At least that's what I did.

message 17: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments You can click on the members and randomly select someone and what I do is compare books when I go to their profile and choose a 5-star book that I haven't read but have marked to-read.

Alyson- we are friends, so you could always go and look through my bookshelves if you want.

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments Thanks everyone - and yes Kellee I know we are definitely friends! :-) (Twitter, FB, GR)

:) Hope you find something good to read :)

message 21: by Amy (new)

Amy Or you can always type in a book that you're interested in reading, scroll down and see if any of your friends rated it five starts. That's how I found my five star book.

Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) (alybee930) | 446 comments I just finished reading When Life Gives You O.J. - It is Middle Grade, Zelly is on summer break and it is over 100 pages. Would this count? It is a 5 star for me if anyone wanted to read it.

message 23: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Yep that would count. :)

message 24: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Can a book count in more than one category?

message 25: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Nope.

message 26: by Amy (new)

Amy Can I use Angel Burn as a religious genre? The main character in the story is an angel hunter. Don't know if this is a stretch.

message 27: by Maree (new)

Maree | 233 comments Contemplating jumping in on this, despite knowing I shouldn't if I want to do my other monthly reads. For the ones that require discussion, do we post that discussion here? Or is the 'discussion' part of this post just for clarifications about the rules?

message 28: by Amy (new)

Amy This is just discussion. There is a points thread as well.

message 29: by Maree (new)

Maree | 233 comments Yes, but discussion on what? Just the rules, or on the books that require discussion as part of the points? I'm assuming that should be discussed on the points threat.

message 30: by Amy (new)

Amy Anything. If you have questions about a task and need clarification, then you can post it here.

message 31: by Maree (new)

Maree | 233 comments Lol, I appreciate your trying to answer, but I don't think you're understanding what I mean by discussion. For example:

1.20 Read a book from the WT Top Novel list and discuss why you think it should or should not be on the list.

Where should we post our discussion? In this thread, in the points thread, or in our review of the book (and then add a link when we claim it in the points thread)?

message 32: by Amy (new)

Amy Oh no. I think for the one, we either post within the points thread or possibly in a thread that's made for the book (if there is one).

message 33: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Maree wrote: "Contemplating jumping in on this, despite knowing I shouldn't if I want to do my other monthly reads. For the ones that require discussion, do we post that discussion here? Or is the 'discussion'..."

Maree,

Whenever one asks for discussion, I first look to see if the book has its own thread. If it doesn't, I make a thread for the book. Then, I post there and put a link when I post my points. But if you don't want to you could probably post your thoughts when you post your points.

message 34: by Kristen (last edited Jul 14, 2011 08:18PM) (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments We will accept either way that Kellee said. You can start a new thread, or contribute to a discussion already existing about the book and say you did so. Or you can add your thoughts when posting the points for the book. :)

This is just for general questions about the challenge, such as Amy's question.

I would accept a book with angels in it as religious fiction.

Sorry I haven't been around, it's been a tough week. I'll get back to updates next week guys.

message 35: by Amy (new)

Amy Thanks. Hope things get better Kristen!

message 36: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm reading Sweet Valley Confidential: Ten Years Later and really want to use it for the challenge. Having a hard time trying to fit it somewhere. If it doesn't, no biggie. But I was wondering if it might work for task 5.5 or 5.10? Even though they are no longer in high school/college, it keeps flashing back to things that happened during that time.

Jennifer W | 1289 comments Mod
I just wanted to let challenge participants know that the polls are up for August's group reads. As this is a task, you might want to vote for your favorite!

http://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/17...

message 38: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Amy, if it talks about a main event while they were in high school I would accept it for 5.10. :)

message 39: by Amy (new)

Amy Okay, so far it's just more about different random high school events, but who knows since I'm only halfway through. Once I get to the end I"ll know better. Just wanted to check.

Karis Jacobstein (yalitwit) | 419 comments Heather wrote: "Are we being strict about this task: 1.10 Read one of the group reads chosen during July, August, or September and contribute to the discussion? I really want to read the July book for this task, b..."

You don't have to read it during the month the group read it in, just during the challenge period. In fact, if you aren't sure you want to read a July book, I would recommend saving this part of the challenge until the September books are posted, then decide which of the 6 books you would like to use. (Although, I have to say, both July books are great!)

message 41: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments You can also read all of them, but only the first counts as 10 points, the rest would be 2 points. :)

message 42: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Kristen/Karis: Would a book with a big English project and a possible first kiss work for 5.10?

message 43: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments I would say no. Rather it be an actual event - homecoming, graduation, field trip, etc.

message 44: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Kristen wrote: "I would say no. Rather it be an actual event - homecoming, graduation, field trip, etc."

Pooh. Okie dokie.

message 45: by Amy (new)

Amy Can a book about fairies count for the sci/fi genre?

message 46: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments Fairies would be either paranormal or fantasy/supernatural. Sci-fi is space, aliens, other worlds, etc.

message 47: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments For the "Back to School" section... what if we're no longer *in* school, and can't get a list of what's being read in our sector of the world or a teacher to recommend books to you?

message 48: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments @message #47 - I can think of an exception to this - the Artemis Fowl series has to do with fairies *and* is sci-fi.

message 49: by Maree (new)

Maree | 233 comments Jesi, I went online and looked at the summer high school reading lists in my area. It was easy to find a long list of possible books.

message 50: by Jesi (new)

Jesi (pwnedkitten) | 198 comments Google. Now why didn't I think of that? **shameface** Thanks, Maree.
