Yes. I have. I thought the first book in Hunger Games was excellent, but the second book just seemed to tread over the same territory, so I didn't like it as much. Haven't read the third book yet. Battle Royale is a great film, and Hunger Games undoubtedly owes it a nod or two.

You have my utmost thanks :) What about a chocolate book to kill two birds with one stone?

Audrey (Seaholly) | 219 comments Ah but would I read it or eat it........Or I could read it then eat it. Now that sounds like a plan.

Unfortunately the place burned down after my brother sold it. Sad really as it had such atmosphere. You stepped inside and you disappeared into a world of yesteryear. You forgot completely that you were just on the edge of the city centre,

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'd like one with a built in flask.

You know, for coffee...

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Perhaps they could be made like chocolate liquers...so with each page you get a drink!

message 463: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments OK, edible with an inbuilt flask. Now there's no need to leave the comfort of the (insert favourite reading place) for the daily necessities of eating and drinking. Kindle will be a thing of the past once it catches on ;)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh I'm sure we can add the required features to our kindles.

Sharon4 | 20 comments I've finished A Proper Companion and found it agreeable enough to download another of Candice Hern's novels. It's pleasant, predictable stuff and the author is canny enough to refer to the genre's limitations in the text - there are one or two knowing winks in the reader's direction, which I quite liked.

I've also finished Sea of Poppies - that's the Kindle edition, I read the paperback - and would definitely recommend it, but only for fans of historical novels. Also, the language is sometimes difficult to keep up with, although I found that once I got into the rhythm, I got the gist, albeit not always the full meaning.

It has a huge story, lots of characters and very big themes, and as I want to stay with that, I'm making a start on Assassin's Quest: Book Three of the Farseer Trilogy I read and loved the first two - Robin Hobb's imagination is very special, even by fantasy standards - and was really looking forward to this one. I pulled my paperback copy off the shelf, opened it and found a page of tiny point 10 typeface floating in front of my eyes, so off to my Kindle I went.

Off Kindle and to keep up with the big themes, I'm going to read Rebels and Traitors: An Epic Novel of the English Civil War I love Lindsey Davis' Falco series, and am relishing the prospect of seeing what she does with the Civil War.

Grace | 4 comments I literally just finished 'Anna Karenina' by Leo Tolstoy. And fellow stingy people: it was free. Of course, that's always a plus, but that doesn't mean I suggest reading it.

I will soon write a proper review, but just to keep it brief here; it was quite a waste of time. Yes, there are some good moments, but there are many more that are painfully dull. I don't advise you to read it. Watch the film.

message 468: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments oh dear Anna Karenina is in my tbr pile, i havent got round to it yet because it's so long...

I just finished The Kult which was amazing I recommend to all. I started The Light Fantastic after being inspired by whoever it was in the new terry pratchett book thread (thats 2 down and a million still to go) It was much better than the 1st, seemed to have a faster pace as well. I finished that and started The Lost Symbol

message 472: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments well i finished the kult in work and then I did 40 mins on the exercise bike reading light fantastic and that took me to lik 40% read while cooking dinner and doing the dishes as well and since football was on I read some more in the evening and got it finished in bed. It only took a couple hours to read light fantastic.

message 473: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments wish I could read when at work.... must have one amazing job Judd !

message 474: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh okay. That makes sense. Where do you put your kindle when you wash dishes? I'd be afraid of dropping it in the sink.

message 475: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments i put it in a sealable sandwich bag and rest it behind the sink against the wall :o)

And I read at tea break and lunch hour lorraine not while i'm actually working cause thats when i'm on here ;o) The way the lunches worked out yesterday I had mine on my tea break so I had an hour in the afternoon just for reading. I'm meeting a pal for lunch today though so no reading

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I do the zippy bag when I bubble bath but haven't tried the dishes thing. Yet.
I wish I had brought some large zippies. Now that we have the recipe thread, I'm using the iPad to follow the recipes. It got a bit tomato-y the other day...
Next time I'll cover it with a bit of cling film, I think.

message 477: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments oh dear. Poor iPad.

message 478: by Sharon4 (new)

Sharon4 | 20 comments I wanted some extra protection for my Kindle in case I get caught in the rain. I love my local park and try to walk there several times a week, but obviously, there isn't a lot of cover for humans, dogs, ducks, electronic devices etc. I found a very nice A5 zippy-wallet in Rymans - it takes my Kindle in its Duragadget holder without taking up much room in my bag. I'm sure someone on this forum mentioned zippy wallets,so thank you to whoever it was.

message 479: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I do need to get a couple of proper waterproof covers for holidays, I think. I did have one in my shopping basket that someone in Amazoo recommended but I didn't get it as I wasn't convinced the kindle in it's lighted would fit. I'll have to get round to doing more research before Christmas, I guess.
I did get a waterproof map cover from the 99p shop but its rubbish. Can't see through it and it's too big. Waste of a quid.

message 480: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I should maybe have thought of that before now... I go on holidays on Sat morning!!!!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh you'll be able to get plenty of rum down your neck and lots of books read in a week. Really good timing as well, with the kids back in school n all. That's one thing about our holidays. Always during school holidays, hohum.

message 488: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments There's a thread over on Amazoo about the Facebook killer, Sarah. Have you seen it? Some nastiness in the thread ( but most of the threads have nastiness in them these days) but it seems it's being well received.

message 489: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Yes Patti read it last night, that's what reminded me I had the book on my TBR list.I downloaded the 2nd part after reading the thread. They seem to give authors a hard time over there,I don't get it.As booklovers you would think they would have more tolerance for the folks that make their passion possible imho!

It's hard as a struggling author to promote work without posting in various places about said book(s). That's why it's so great to come across groups like this that don't want to hunt you down like a dog. :)

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Do you think we should start some sort of resistance group to rescue the authors from the Amazoo forum?
I want some flashing bed knobs!
I keep trying to snag the authors as they're pissing by.

Thought the Lost Symbol was awful - think Dan Brown just chasing the dollar with that one. Not a patch on his previous thrillers

message 497: by Ian (new)

Ian (pepecan) Finished Hemingway's short story The Old Man and the Sea which was really good and now well into Night by Elie Wiesel which is a short memoir from a survivor of the horror of Auschwitz.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Gosh, you're quick Ian, you'd only just started that when you last posted!

For some reason I can't stop comparing that HIGHLY disturbing film with the book! And I'm definitely going to be overloading in Samples thanks to this thread!

message 500: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes. We find it gets very expensive when all we do is talk about books. That's why we talk about so many other things as well.

Right, everyone? Right????
