I'm currently going through a short story phase so I'm going to nominate Albert Camus' Exile and the Kingdom.

Hmm.. Not sure about that particular Lessing - not into outer space and such like. Could live with Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter, it seems to be one of his more popular novels. Thanks Elizabeth.
