Rachel Cotterill (rachelcotterill) Can I join in? I started afresh when I got my Kindle and for a little while I was very good at only buying a new book when I was ready to read it, but I've slipped lately. Not least because of the sales, and I do like a good bargain ;)

I currently have 95 on my Kindle TBR, not counting the four I'm currently reading. I know that's nothing compared to some, but preventative action is required!

I should be able to decimate that by the end of the year, hopefully, and I won't buy any more until I do so. (But freebies don't count as purchases!) Please hold me to account :)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments I'm doing mine a little bit different. Basically, rather than focusing on the books I own, I'm trying to bring some balance to my tbr and read some things I might miss otherwise. This is being achieved by my random list as well as adding in books from series I am already reading, BotMs, first-reads that aren't yet published and trying to balance out the genres in proportion to my normal reading. As a result, below I have my target numbers plus the credit or deficit for each. Sorry for the long-winded explanation! Also, planning to update weekly, as it'd be easy to get off track monthly

Format: Target - Actual = +/- credits

to-read Shelf: 400 - 399 = +1
tbr-in-current month shelf: 10 - 8 = +2
priority-fantasy-tbr shelf: 15 - 17 = -2
priority-fiction-tbr: 25 - 37 = -12
priority-non-fiction tbr: 25 - 38 = -13
priority-plays-tbr: 5 - 3 = +2
priority-poetry tbr: 5 - 5 = 0
priority-science-fiction tbr: 15 - 18 = -3
priority-shorts tbr: 5 - 5 = 0

Total: 515 - 534 = -19

Books Completed Since Last Update (7/30/11)

Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin from 7/25/11 to 7/31/11 - 4 Stars
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick on 8/1/11 - 5 Stars
The Good Muslim: A Novel by Tahmima Anam from 7/30/11 to 8/3/11 - 3 Stars
Nineteen Seventy Four by David Peace from 8/2/11 to 8/4/11 - 3 Stars
The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray from 8/2/11 to 8/5/11 - 4 Stars

Traci MrsJoseph wrote: "Good job, Dawn! I almost feel Dragons should count as two as its so big, lol."

Actually that's a good idea. Maybe you should count page number as a factor. Otherwise you might find yourself reading shorter books so you can buy more. I found myself doing that with the yearly challenge. I keep putting longer books for later. Maybe for novels more than 1,000 pages you should count them as two.

Laurel Sigh - Somehow, I'm quite sure that Grant will be proud of me...

I read 5 books, earning me a shopping spree of 1. The new Lev Grossman novel The Magician King is out and I had to get it! Then, I saw a copy of The Hypnotist, which Horror Afficionados are reading, so I grabbed it. I can read 5 more books to earn that one. Then, Tracey referred to a series she loves about Mary Russell and a retired Beekeeping Sherlock Holmes. Amazon had just one copy left! To earn free shipping, I had to pick out a couple more. Thankfully, they were books I'd already read, so they technically don't count...

My name is Laurel, and I'm a book-buying addict!

The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler The Magician King by Lev Grossman The Beekeeper's Apprentice (Mary Russell, #1) by Laurie R. King Retribution Falls (Tales of the Ketty Jay, #1) by Chris Wooding Black Lung Captain (Tales of the Ketty Jay, #2) by Chris Wooding

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments lol!! You managed to turn a 1 book purchase into a shopping spree. rotf

That's exactly why I'm going to hold on to my 1 measly little credit...when I do start buying books it's going to be crazy.

message 224: by Laurel (new)

Laurel No worries, Tracey! I am an unabashed Sherlock Holmes fan and will happily dive into any series related to him. Plus, there hasn't been a single recommendation from the Afficionados that I haven't loved.

You all have introduced me to Jim Butcher, Kim Harrison, Carrie Vaughn, Patricia Briggs, Larry Correia, Simon R. Green, Andre Norton, and now Laurie R. King, just to name a few. Another Fantasy group on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ is responsible for introducing me to Lois McMaster Bujold, Janny Wurts, Brandon Sanderson and Robin Hobb. Personally, I think my life is better for it! My wallet, not so much ;)

Happy Reading!

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments I like fudge, but I seriously want a piece of cola cake right now.

Started another book from my current month tbr, which is good. Ate too much for dinner, so not up for more Gravity's Rainbow tonight, but that's probably OK given how bizarre a read it is.

message 232: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Is cola cake that cake you make by mixing cake mix with soda? Or is it something else?

message 233: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Never heard of that. It's a recipe we have that uses cola in at least the icing, possibly the cake too. It's been a long time since I made it. I don't use cake mixes often, so I know it's one from scratch.

message 234: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) So I'm going to be in trouble today. I'm going to Border's, and I need to try to not buy anything.

I have to go though! You see, my son has recently discovered the majesty that is flip-the-flap books. You know, those books that you flip up flaps in to find something hidden beneath.. He thinks they are hilarious. The problem? I only have one of them, and I'm getting very very sick of reading "Where's Spot" to him three times a night. So! I'm going to Borders, to see if I can find some more on sale. But while I'm there, I need to not buy any new books for me.

Wish me luck! This is going to be hard.

But they're having a sale. And they're closing so its like a special event. If you don't buy "it" now they might not have it later. Lol.

I'll browse, but I won't buy anything.

Laurel Sad news for book lovers in Winnipeg (my hometown). Our beloved Aqua Books and Eat Bistro are closing. Aqua is a used book store that takes up more space than most new book stores. It is nestled in a gorgeous old building, hosts numerous reading and cultural events. Eat Bistro is attached. The tables are brightly painted old wooden pieces you might remember from your grandmother's place. The menus are housed in the covers of children's books, and all of the food is made from scratch! They have the best chicken fingers (hand breaded with over 20 dipping sauces to choose from) that I've ever tasted!

A group of my friends and I are going down tomorrow for supper and a book buying spree to try and help out the owners before they close their doors. It means I'm TOTALLY going to be behind in my reading challenge, but I think that supporting such a wonderful place is worth it!
