1. What is your impression of Rosa? Is she a good leader? Who is her biggest threat? Peltz or Falco? Or someone farther afield, like this General O’Malley, the power in the east? Or is the general just foreshadowing for the series?
2. I understand very little Spanish. I know enough to understand jefa is “head, but I didn’t know that cabrón meant “asshole. My education is sadly lacking in the curse words. Do you speak more than one language? If so, what? Do you stop to look unknown words up, or just try to glean their meaning for the content of the sentence? Does this interrupt the flow? (Does anyone know what tpalapa means? Google can only do so much.)
3. It has been four-five years after the first book and the Change; Dr. Chris Welsh has spent most all that time alone. “Staying long enough to make friends and then watching them die was just too damn hard. What do these things that say about his character? Could you do it? Would you feel this way?
4. Chris has developed some mad fighting skills since book one, true? And survival skills. Who knew he was holding so much guilt about Ange’s death? Comments.
5. Like Chris, did you know Rosa’s skinwalkers test was ineffective? Who in Rosa’s village are you betting will be a “good skinwalker? Has Chris already become one? Will Tilly & Jameson’s baby be one? Or there any “bad skinwalkers present in Valle de Bravo?
6. What does Bee's prophesy mean?
7. Shut the front door! What was with Christ asking if any of the women traded for sex? That seemed a little out of character, right? Or was that just his way of a “testing the lay (sorry for the pun) of the land question? And what books could they have that they don’t want anyone to know about?
8. Doesn’t their having a regular Burning Night set them up for a planned attack?
Megan's Questions for Chapters 10-18
9. I like that Chris is using his knowledge of the animal world to "tame" Rosa. Do you think his tactics are working?
10. Chris seems to be able to hear things from great distances away now. He also seems to be having premonitions/dreams telling him things that will come. Why do you think his abilities are rapidly increasing at this point? He even seems surprised by it himself.
11. Why do you think the Change is affecting the women more than men? The ratio is two to one in favor of men...it's got to be a scary place out there for a woman these days. It seems like Rosa might know how it is first hand. What do you think happened to her?
12. That dream! WOWZERS! What does it mean that they're sharing dreams now? I wonder if they are "mating". I've read many shifter books where they share dreams in the mating process. It almost looked like a glimpse of the future?
13. Once again, a vision has paid off for Chris. Earlier, he mentioned the visions he'd had of Penny. Do you think she might be guiding him? Or are these really abilities he's just come into?
14. Who was the truckful of girls en route to? The General we keep hearing so much about? The driver of the truck would rather die than return empty-handed. Do we think his boss will have something to do with Bee's prophecy?
15. Rosa was shot twice BEFORE the Change? Interesting.
16. And they finally kiss in real life? Sure, Rosa was in a weak injured moment, but it was still pretty nice. What do you think it will take to make Rosa finally give in and let down her guard? I think they'll have to come clean about a few things with each other first.
17. A nd so Chris will squash the rebellion with his brave act....for now anyway. I can't see all these hard men staying under Rosa's rule forever, can you? I'm not sure I'd want my man to kneel before me and swear allegiance to me. What do you think?

18. What did you think of the Bravo ceremony? Did you guess what the hidden item was?
19. Are the shared dreams giving you déjà vu of Jenna and Mason's special communication?
20. How are you feeling now that you've read their back story? Like them more, less or about the same? I hasn't recorded that the loss of Ange had left a bigger scar for Chris than the two ex-wives. You?
21. Anyone else think Lem is going to cause trouble with the new women?
22. Comments on the funeral?
23. This may sound weird, but it made it more realistic to me that Rosa had a 'set-back' during sex that first time at the cave. Did this add or detract for you?
24. Is Rosa right to be so worried about her position of power versus her relationship with Chris?

We'll be waiting for you with different buddy-reads in Jan, Sans!

1. What is your impression of Rosa? Is she a good leader? Who is her biggest threat? Peltz or Falco? Or someone farther afield, like this General O’Malley, the power in the east? Or is the general just foreshadowing for the series?
She seems kinda manly to me so far....not my favorite type of heroine, but I'm dealing with it. She seems to have a few hints of vulnerability, which I like a lot. I don't know about the general. It doesn't seem like they would bring him up for no reason.
I don't speak any Spanish, so I just sorta plow through those parts. I can usually tell what is meant by the context clues...surely the author knows that the majority of readers wouldn't know what those words mean. I wish I spoke another language...I stupidly took French in high school. My dad tried to talk me out of it, but that only made me want to take it more LOL! Rebellion!
3. It has been four-five years after the first book and the Change; Dr. Chris Welsh has spent most all that time alone. “Staying long enough to make friends and then watching them die was just too damn hard. What do these things that say about his character? Could you do it? Would you feel this way?
I think he's still traumatized over Ange. :( He's changed so much from the first book, where he came off as kinda nerdy and semi-optimistic. Nothing like loneliness to make a person hard. It was sad that his voice was scratchy from lack of use. I think I'd at least sing or talk to myself.
4. Chris has developed some mad fighting skills since book one, true? And survival skills. Who knew he was holding so much guilt about Ange’s death? Comments.
Chris is kinda awesome now! Still not as hard as Mason was, but definitely a fighting machine. It seems almost a LITTLE far-fetched, him holding onto this many feelings about Ange's death...it didn't seem to me like they were IN LOVE or anything, just in those beginning stages of like.
I don't think Chris has become one, but I definitely think there are a few in their midst. Probably ones she would never suspect, which might cause her to rethink her hatred of them all. Falco and Lem seem ultra aggressive so far, so I'm thinking they would be too obvious.
6. What does Bee prophesy mean? I am thinking it has something to do with Burning Night? That's what I immediately thought of. Plus, I think Rosa is just a little TOO proud of her colony. Something major is going to happen, and jefe might not be the leader of the pack much longer.
7. Shut the front door! What was with Chris asking if any of the women traded for sex? That seemed a little out of character, right? Or was that just his way of a “testing the lay (sorry for the pun) of the land question? And what books could they have that they don’t want anyone to know about?
Homeboy needs some lovin'!!! Maybe he was trying to get Rosa to offer? I'm not sure it seeemed TOO out of character for the Chris of today....in the previous book, most definitely. The book thing was weird...something fishy going on there.
8. Doesn’t their having a regular Burning Night set them up for a planned attack? I think so! Plus, I think there might be a mole in the camp, for Peltz to keep the raids going as well as he has.
Enjoying this so far...really glad there aren't a thousand flashbacks in this one!

#1 I agree, Rosa is a bit too manly for me. Though I’m betting Chris will bring out her soft spots.
#2 I’m with you; I wish I spoke another language. Amazing what I picked up from movies and books, b/c I sure didn’t learn it in school though, here in California, they started cramming it down our throats from 7th grade onward. You know there is only one word in a teenager’s job description, don’t you? (view spoiler)
#3 Really, good point. I think some of his fixation on Ange is b/c he has been so isolated; too much time to dwell on his “mistake.
#4 I tend to agree with you again, Megan. I’m trying to justify his abilities by thinking Mason trained him and Tru gave him some attitude.
#5 I’m thinking (view spoiler) .
#6 Oh! I like that idea.
#7 LOL! He does need some. And, I agree with you about the fishy smell.
#8 I agree with you about the mole too. I’m just Mind Melding with you right and left. Enjoying the book too.

1. What is your impression of Rosa? Is she a good leader? Who is her biggest threat? Peltz or Falco? Or someone farther afield, like this General O’Malley, the power in the east? Or is the general just foreshadowing for the series?
My first impression of Rosa wasn't very flattering: A bitchy Mason, fabulous. I'm not sure she's a great leader, a tough one for sure, but I see holes in herr iron fist ruling mentality. I think many forces are a threat because she has a somewhat linear game plan/ruling style.
Like Megan, I took French but remember zilch. Random foreign words generally are okay because it's sparse, but here it's rather distracting because it's used so much. I feel like I should look them up, but that would disrupt the reading flow even more.
3. It has been four-five years after the first book and the Change; Dr. Chris Welsh has spent most all that time alone. “Staying long enough to make friends and then watching them die was just too damn hard. What do these things that say about his character? Could you do it? Would you feel this way?
He seems miserable and so unlike the Harvard we read in the last book. He just seems rather flippant and sorta mean, but with your life turning upside down like their world has I can sorta understand, but it does seem to be a little far-fetched. I would hope to retain something of my original self even with outside struggles.
4. Chris has developed some mad fighting skills since book one, true? And survival skills. Who knew he was holding so much guilt about Ange’s death? Comments.
Again, I can see adapting to your surroundings, but his skills seem to be amped up too much to believe. Unless he has some supernatural abilities, it's hard to wrap my head around and belief.
I didn't see how her test could be effective, so I'm glad Chris told her so. I think Winston might be one and maybe Jameson, though I don't think the baby will be. As for bad ones, I don't know, there are people in the village that could for sure go bad if they were bitten, but I don't think there are any right now.
6. What does Bee prophesy mean?
No clue, maybe these other bands will come and launch a "real" attack on the village destroying all Rosa built.
7. Shut the front door! What was with Christ asking if any of the women traded for sex? That seemed a little out of character, right? Or was that just his way of a “testing the lay (sorry for the pun) of the land question? And what books could they have that they don’t want anyone to know about?
I think Chris is rather desperate for some lovin'. lol Also, I think he likes to push buttons to see reactions, even if he has no desire to what he asks. As for the book thing, I thought it was rather suspicious. Rosa mentioned talking to a mother about teaching her child to read, so I would think books are there, I just don't understand why they are being hidden. A way to limit knowledge or advancement in the village? Could Rosa be that insecure?
8. Doesn’t their having a regular Burning Night set them up for a planned attack?
It didn't read that it was a regularly planned Burning night, like set day of the week of something, so having it used for planned attacks doesn't quite fit, but if there are scouts/spies constantly monitoring the village than it could be viewed as a vulnerability, but they have to keep moral up somehow since the ladies are in limited supply. lol

#1 Hmmm. All true.
#2 I’ve been looking them up and it does disrupt the flow. Definitely.
#3 True. He is quite changed. I like the old Harvard.
#4 I agree. Except, I think he is probably a skinwalker.
#7 Yes the book thing is suspicious. Yes, I think Rosa is that insecure.
#8 Ah! Saw in the next chapter that they do rotate “Burning Night. Still. A venerable time, especially if they have a mole.

1. What is your impression of Rosa? Is she a good leader? Who is her biggest threat? Peltz or Falco? Or someone farther afield, like this General O’Malley, the power in the east? Or is the general just foreshadowing for the series?
Linda Hamilton from Terminator? Yes, she's a good leader because she listens when other people talk (Ingrid's advice)and knows how to deal with troublemakers( Viv attending to Lem). Chris is the biggest threat.
Yes, Urdu. I find out the meaning from the nook's dictionary and it doesn't really interrupt since its built-in. Tpalapa is some kinda bread, I think.
3. It has been four-five years after the first book and the Change; Dr. Chris Welsh has spent most all that time alone. “Staying long enough to make friends and then watching them die was just too damn hard. What do these things that say about his character? Could you do it? Would you feel this way?
That he's afraid to take a chance and I totally understand.
4. Chris has developed some mad fighting skills since book one, true? And survival skills. Who knew he was holding so much guilt about Ange’s death? Comments.
True but then he was with Mason. I don't think he was in love with Angie, he considered her a good friend. I liked how he dreams of Penny and finds something good after it.
It did seem impractical to me. Jameson was in jail-he might turn out to be a bad one.
6. What does Bee prophesy mean?
The attack on Burning Night.
7. Shut the front door! What was with Christ asking if any of the women traded for sex? That seemed a little out of character, right? Or was that just his way of a “testing the lay (sorry for the pun) of the land question? And what books could they have that they don’t want anyone to know about?
He was just provoking Rosa. I don't think they're hiding books, I think people have stopped thinking books are any use and they were surprised when Chris asked for some.
8. Doesn’t their having a regular Burning Night set them up for a planned attack?
It wasn't planned. The only plan is NOT to have it on the night of a raid.

#1 - I totally agree with your thoughts about her leadership.
#4 - After reading the next set of chapters, I think it's clear Chris does have some abilities. I agree with you @Lisa Kay...I now think he's a skinwalker. Maybe latent because nobody's threatened anything/anyone he loves? But was he bit, or is magic just changing people now?
I guess I will do the next set of questions?

1. What is your impression of Rosa? Is she a good leader? Who is her biggest threat? Peltz or Falco? Or someone farther afield, like this General O’Malley, the power in the east? Or is the general just foreshadowing for the series? I think the General is too far removed yet, but Falco or maybe Lem could be a danger to her. She is a good leader, ever vigilant, she's done what she's had to do to get the men's respect and obedience, but it's also obvious she cares for the inhabitants of the valle.
Spanish is my native tongue, but I also know a bit of french and Italian, I only leanrt English when we came to Australia. Feel free to ask for any translations. Jefa means lady boss, btw. Cabron is dickhead and hijo de puta is son of a bitch. Oye is listen, claro is obviously, or of course, depending on context and que bueno is very good or how cool... anything else I've missed? Where was tpalapa? I missed it but don't recognise it as Spanish. I only ever stop to look up words if I feel like I'm missing some kind of context to the story, but usually try to glean the meaning from the surrounding sentences, if I'm reading a language I can't understand.
3. It has been four-five years after the first book and the Change; Dr. Chris Welsh has spent most all that time alone. “Staying long enough to make friends and then watching them die was just too damn hard. What do these things that say about his character? Could you do it? Would you feel this way? I thought this was a bit harsh, seeing as Jenna and Mason seem to still be alive. It says more about his need to be alone to process for himself the changes in the world.
4. Chris has developed some mad fighting skills since book one, true? And survival skills. Who knew he was holding so much guilt about Ange’s death? Comments. I don't know if I'm being too hard on the guy, but I thought this was a bit lame. He feels so guilty but he leaves the daughter in someone else's hands? So far the last five years since the last book seem to have been glossed over.
Ooh, good question. I didn't know the skinwalker test was ineffective. I get the feeling that Chris is a skinwalker, but not sure what he would turn into, I'm struggling to remember the animals from the first book. I wouldn't be surprised if Falco turns out to be one too!
6. What does Bee prophesy mean? I took it to mean there'll be a fire.
7. Shut the front door! What was with Christ asking if any of the women traded for sex? That seemed a little out of character, right? Or was that just his way of a “testing the lay (sorry for the pun) of the land question? And what books could they have that they don’t want anyone to know about? That scene seemed odd. He doesn't seem to be a guy who'd get that desperate for sex, and not sure why they'd be unwilling to share books unless it goes back to the adage of "knowledge is power" and they don't want anyone temporary gainnig more knowledge and possibly an advantage... hmm, all conjecture at this point...
8. Doesn’t their having a regular Burning Night set them up for a planned attack? I thought they changed the days.

13. Once again, a vision has payed off for Chris.
17. And so Chris will squash the rebellion with his brave act....for now anyway. I can't see all these hard men staying under Rosa's rule forever, can you? I'm not sure I'd want my man to kneel before me and swear allegiance to me. What do you think?

9. I like that Chris is using his knowledge of the animal world to "tame" Rosa. Do you think his tactics are working?
LOL! Yes.
10. Chris seems to be able to hear things from great distances away now. He also seems to be having premonitions/dreams telling him things that will come. Why do you think his abilities are rapidly increasing at this point? He even seems surprised by it himself.
At first I thought it was the setting now I’m thinking it is the emotions he is finally feeling. I think he is a skinwalker and a (view spoiler) .
11. Why do you think the Change is affecting the women more than men? The ratio is two to one in favor of men...it's got to be a scary place out there for a woman these days. It seems like Rosa might know how it is first hand. What do you think happened to her?
It must burn a lot of calories to Change, LOL! But also strength and muscle. Men have more of those. Yes, yes, I know women are equal in lower body strength (if measured pound for pound against a man), however, not in upper body strength. Or is it the other way around? I read ahead a bit and know what happened to Rose, it wasn’t quite what I thought.
12. That dream! WOWZERS! What does it mean that they're sharing dreams now? I wonder if they are "mating". I've read many shifter books where they share dreams in the mating process. It almost looked like a glimpse of the future?
I think it is because they are mating too. I believe it is the future.
13. Once again, a vision has paid off for Chris. Earlier, he mentioned the visions he'd had of Penny. Do you think she might be guiding him? Or are these really abilities he's just come into?
Huh. I hadn’t thought of that. Good idea. Maybe. Then again, maybe both, LOL! (I know, I’m hedging my bets here.)
14. Who was the truckful of girls en route to? The General we keep hearing so much about? The driver of the truck would rather die than return empty-handed. Do we think his boss will have something to do with Bee's prophecy?
Somewhere the General sent them; another one of his military stations. Probably.
15. Rosa was shot twice BEFORE the Change? Interesting.
Very. She had a rough life.
16. And they finally kiss in real life? Sure, Rosa was in a weak injured moment, but it was still pretty nice. What do you think it will take to make Rosa finally give in and let down her guard? I think they'll have to come clean about a few things with each other first.
Yeah. I always laugh at bit at scenes like that. I would so NOT want to do anything like that if I was injured. Maybe I too much of a wuss. Then she passes out? Huh.
17. A nd so Chris will squash the rebellion with his brave act....for now anyway. I can't see all these hard men staying under Rosa's rule forever, can you? I'm not sure I'd want my man to kneel before me and swear allegiance to me. What do you think?
I think men can work under women, but maybe not in a culture that is predominately Mexican. I also think Rosa is making too big a deal out of losing her status; I don’t think this will be the case, if she finds the right mate. Nah. I wouldn’t need that.

9. I like that Chris is using his knowledge of the animal world to "tame" Rosa. Do you think his tactics are working?
Yep, that they are!
10. Chris seems to be able to hear things from great distances away now. He also seems to be having premonitions/dreams telling him things that will come. Why do you think his abilities are rapidly increasing at this point? He even seems surprised by it himself.
I did think he might be a skinwalker but then it seemed so obvious, I dismissed the theory.
11. Why do you think the Change is affecting the women more than men? The ratio is two to one in favor of men...it's got to be a scary place out there for a woman these days. It seems like Rosa might know how it is first hand. What do you think happened to her?
Dunno about the women dying. Rosa seemed like a rape/abuse victim to me.
12. That dream! WOWZERS! What does it mean that they're sharing dreams now? I wonder if they are "mating". I've read many shifter books where they share dreams in the mating process. It almost looked like a glimpse of the future?
Yep, I think its both. Jenna called Mason her mate too after she changed, remember?
13. Once again, a vision has payed off for Chris. Earlier, he mentioned the visions he'd had of Penny. Do you think she might be guiding him? Or are these really abilities he's just come into?
Might be Penny.
14. Who was the truckful of girls en route to? The General we keep hearing so much about? The driver of the truck would rather die than return empty-handed. Do we think his boss will have something to do with Bee's prophecy?
Probably the General, yeah.
15. Rosa was shot twice BEFORE the Change? Interesting.
Very!
16. And they finally kiss in real life? Sure, Rosa was in a weak injured moment, but it was still pretty nice. What do you think it will take to make Rosa finally give in and let down her guard? I think they'll have to come clean about a few things with each other first.
Hey, its just the beginning. They have the whole book to bluster about before they finally realize they are meant to be together.
17. And so Chris will squash the rebellion with his brave act....for now anyway. I can't see all these hard men staying under Rosa's rule forever, can you? I'm not sure I'd want my man to kneel before me and swear allegiance to me. What do you think?
I don't think most of the men would have a problem with Rosa. Exceptions (read Falco) are always present. Ooh why not? Kneeling'd be fun!

#1 I see her softening quite a bit as the book progresses. I really like that she puts her townspeople first.
#2 That is so neat that you are multilingual; makes you more “worldly and sophisticated. Do you buy the majority of your books in English?
#4 True, about the events of the last five years. Some comment will pop up every now and then about something that happened (his getting shot at by a farmer, or having never experienced something, etc.). I would have liked a little more info.
#7 It was odd!
#8 Yeah, you’re right. **grins sheepishly**

#10 Well, pick that theory right back up, LOL!
#11 Agreed.
#12 Yes, I remember.
#13 Might be. Interesting theory.
#16 LOL! Good “because it is in the script reason.
#17 Oh, you are bad! Very bad. LOL!

9. I like that Chris is using his knowledge of the animal world to "tame" Rosa. Do you think his tactics are working?
He's using what he knows, so it proves that the guy is a smart one, so I would say yes they are!
10. Chris seems to be able to hear things from great distances away now. He also seems to be having premonitions/dreams telling him things that will come. Why do you think his abilities are rapidly increasing at this point? He even seems surprised by it himself.
I think he has some magic in him, but I don't think he's a skinwalker. I think now that he's in a place he cares about that he's listening and trusting his abilities more.
11. Why do you think the Change is affecting the women more than men? The ratio is two to one in favor of men...it's got to be a scary place out there for a woman these days. It seems like Rosa might know how it is first hand. What do you think happened to her?
I got the feeling that she was used by the hellhounds, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I think woman are sought after more and because they are by both humans and hellhounds, their numbers had no choice but to decrease.
12. That dream! WOWZERS! What does it mean that they're sharing dreams now? I wonder if they are "mating". I've read many shifter books where they share dreams in the mating process. It almost looked like a glimpse of the future?
Never thought of it as a mating thing, but maybe. Not like they are having these dreams with other people. I really do believe that it was a glimpse of the future though.
13. Once again, a vision has payed off for Chris. Earlier, he mentioned the visions he'd had of Penny. Do you think she might be guiding him? Or are these really abilities he's just come into?
I think these are his abilities alone. Maybe magic can rub off? lol
14. Who was the truckful of girls en route to? The General we keep hearing so much about? The driver of the truck would rather die than return empty-handed. Do we think his boss will have something to do with Bee's prophecy?
I think this is O'Malley's truck and he's more vicious than anything Rosa would do. And yes, I think the result of saving the women will be Bee's prophecy.
15. Rosa was shot twice BEFORE the Change? Interesting.
She has to be hard for a reason, so meanness from humans and hellhounds makes sense.
16. And they finally kiss in real life? Sure, Rosa was in a weak injured moment, but it was still pretty nice. What do you think it will take to make Rosa finally give in and let down her guard? I think they'll have to come clean about a few things with each other first.
I think she'll need to come clean about her past so Chris knows what to do and what not to do. He's going to need to be very patient.
17. And so Chris will squash the rebellion with his brave act....for now anyway. I can't see all these hard men staying under Rosa's rule forever, can you? I'm not sure I'd want my man to kneel before me and swear allegiance to me. What do you think?
She's just so hard about it all. I guess I didn't understand that with Manuel's death, all her power and strength was called into question. That seemed a little far-fetched to me. I think the new ceremony was putting too much attention or focus on Falco's desire for more power. I don't see the others shunning her this quickly. Also, Chris's 180 reversal on leaving and now staying left me with whiplash.

#17 - I totally agree with you here. I'm having a hard time with Rosa actually....she's not my favorite kind of heroine. And I thought Chris's reversal was a bit out of the blue, but I guess it shows how much she is coming to mean to him. Plus, I think his new abilities have something to do with the changes in his character.
@Lisa Kay
#17 - I didn't think about the cultural difference here. Maybe it will help me to understand Rosa a bit better if I take this into account. I think you're right about it not mattering so much once she finds the right partner. I just personally hate her "my way or the highway" attitude.

#10 Very interesting. You could be right. I guess he can have magical abilities and not be a skinwalker.
#11 Good point.
#13 LOL! Maybe. I should rub this book on myself.
#14 Retaliation is a b!tch.
#17 Excellent point about Chris’s 180 reversal; it is little things like this that keep this book/series from being rated higher by me.

I'm waxing and waning on her. Right now I’ve waned, LOL!

#1 I see her softening quite a bit as the book progresses. I really like that she puts her townspeople first.
#2 That is so neat that you are multilingual; makes you more “worldly a..."
I buy all of my books in English, Lisa Kay. I came here when I was 8 but sometime around my teens I realised I was thinking in English. I have the spelling & grammar of an 8 year old in Spanish... except for the swear words :-)
