The place is the frozen land above the Canadian tree line,Where there are long periods of darkness and light between in winter and summer. The characters are the many species of animals, the uni celled and multy-celled organisms that manage to find a way to survive. In the book it describes how even with few resources available to them these creatures manage to live on with such fighting spirit. With few days of light their timing for reproduction and search for food has to be very precise. Such a delicate balance that can be easily destroyed yet these creatures continue to fight for their survival. The author is amazed at such valor when a small creature threatened by his presence is ready to defend itself in the face of such odds. My opinion on the subject is that these animals are able to value life more than those who live in plentiful environments because of their struggle and resourcefulness.
