Sunita | 2 comments Hi I am Sunita. I accidentally happen to stumble upon this group after i finished read 'Picture of Dorian Gray'. Luckily this was the book currently being read in the forum. I have read classics by Shakespare, Jhon Milton etc. as part of my high school. I work as Engineer and have very few friends who read books (as a hobby). I am single love cooking and reading books in my spare time. Hope to have a great read with you all.

message 102: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Zink | 4 comments My name is Valerie. I read some classics in high school that have stuck with me forever, such as Wuthering Heights, Brave New Worldand 1984. I also taught literatrue/language arts for 10 years (currently teaching math, yikes)and discovered even more there. I came this close to getting a master's degree in English Lit, but just could not finish it in time. I love the classics, but they can be hard to read without reference and discussion, which is why I am excited to find this group. I look forward to my re-read of 1984 (excellent choice!)as I have not read it since high schoool!

Welcome to our group Jon! I am sure that the rest of the members would agree with me that we all do not want you to keep your comments on 1984 to yourself, but to share them with us. That is what this group is for. I certainly look forward to reading your comments when the discussion thread is set up.

Welcome to our group Noelle! I hope that you enjoy reading and discussing classics with us and am glad you joined our book club.

message 106: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) Hi I'm Chris, I have been a member of goodreads for a couple of years and I read all sorts of books, including classics, especially from the Victorian era.

message 107: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello, my name is Keith. I am a sophomore in high school and greatly enjoy reading. I have a goal to read all of John Grisham's books but I would like to be better acquainted with classics. I look forward to taking part in this group with the rest of you.

message 108: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy | 3 comments Howdy, I'm Jer. I recently read Moby Dick for the first time, and am almost done with The Three Musketeers. I thought this would be a good place to get motivation and inspiration for reading more classics. I look forward to reading 1984 once again.

message 109: by Ash (new)

Ash Hello, I am Ashley. I'm 23 years old and have been an avid reader since I can remember. I love all genres but my favorites by far are classics. Most of my friends don't appreciate this genre quite as much as me and I look forward to having people to discuss their merit with.

message 110: by Anne (new)

Anne L Hello, I am Anne. I'm currently an university student who spend a lot of time browsing the school library. I love to read all kind of books, including fantasy, mysteries, general literature etc, but I have always had a special interest for classics. I'm really thrill to find this group and am looking forward to all the discussions.

message 111: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Burns | 1 comments Hello Christa and thank you for your kind welcoming remarks on joining the group. I am looking forward to hear what fellow members think of the books that the group are reading. I am a big Dickens fan and I am about to meet 'Our Mutual Friend' and I have been promising myself that I will start reading Elizabeth Gaskell's work and I have just started 'Mary Barton'. I find that the joy of reading is the connections that build up, when reading one novel the tentacles of another authors work wrap around the unwary and leads to yet more pleasures.

I would like to say a big hello to all my fellow members and would enjoy any comments and recommendations.

message 112: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 14 comments Hi i'm Sophie and i'm a stay at home mummy to my 2 toddlers. I used to read a lot before i had children and have only recently started again now they are both sleeping through the night and i have more time to myself!

Kensauce Scholzieboii | 2 comments Hello everyone. I'm an English major and realized long ago that while I do love the classics, I've sadly read only a very small portion of them. I'm here to bone up on my classic lit and start ticking them off my to read list. I've already read 1984 and thought it was ok but not going to read it over so I'll be sitting next month out but look forward to whatever follows. In the mean time I mean to finish some Game of Thrones books.

Welcome to our group new members Mary Ann, Cynthia, Michelle, Sunita, Valerie, Chris, Keith, Jer, Ashley, Anne, Jimmy, Sophie, Whiskers. I am sorry that I missed some of you earlier, but for whatever reason I do not know my thread here did not show the update of the new comments made.
Everyone is welcome to join in the discussion of July's book 1984 whether you are reading it this month or have previously read it and whether you liked or disliked it. I enjoy reading all your comments very much. We look forward to a very lively, but considerate discussion. Happy reading and discussing!

message 115: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (shelcatzoe) Hi, I'm Shelby. I just graduated from college with a BS in Psychology and absolutely love to read classics and I have a hard time finding people who share my enthusiasm. I haven't read 1984 and I'm really excited to join into the discussion as I read with you :)

message 116: by Stefania (new)

Stefania (stefychi) Hi everyone, my name is Stefania and I'm an italian college student. I love reading classic books and my favourites are The Picture of Dorian Gray and Pride and Prejudice. I've seen that my to-read list looks like yours, so hope to read those books with you, and maybe getting good recommendations :)

message 117: by Rachael (new)

Rachael Hi, I'm Rachael. There are so many classic books that, when they are mentioned, I find myself thinking "I should read that" or "I've always wanted to read that but still haven't" and this seemed a great place to start! Love the idea of being able to chat about them as we go along too - one of the thing that puts me off with some classics is the feeling that I *should* like them!

message 118: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Hello! I'm a homeschooling mom of two young teens, and was excited to see that y'all will be reading and discussing 1984 next month. It's been a long time since I've read it myself, and plan to have my kids study it this year. I love reading but have slipped in my habits for the past few years. So this will put a little (good) pressure on!

message 119: by Cianna (new)

Cianna | 6 comments Hi, my name is Cianna. I am 32 years old and I absolutely love reading. Most of the classics are on my to-read list but I just haven't cracked open most of them! I thought this group would help with that. I am also a first grade teacher who finds it very hard to sit down and read for pleasure once the school year starts. This group will help with that also I'm hoping! I'm really enjoying reading all the comments and posts in this group. I plan to participate more in the future! Thank you all! HaPpY rEaDiNg!

BEBE (beebee12) | 12 comments Hello everyone! I recently just joined this group (literally) because I absolutely love to read and would like to further expand my knowledge about books. I am very happy that there is a Classics group. I'll be taking part a lot!
Thank you!
Balbina :)

message 121: by Trudie (new)

Trudie (trudieb) Hi, I just recently started using my GoodReads account and decided I wanted to enter into book discussions with like minded people, so here I am joined up to this group. At the moment I am on a little bit of a non-fiction jag, reading "The Big Short".
I really like Orwell so I am excited to reread 1984 with you during July.
Hmmm what about me - I live in NZ and love to read but trained as a scientist..
As an aside here is a link to my new book blog you can see what I am up to reading wise.

I use to be the same way with books, but you just have to find what you really like and then the book will just suck you in and you won't be able to put it down! :)

I also teach what must be smilar to 1st grade here (5-6year olds) and totally agree that summer is my reading season! After that it all gets a bit busy and hard to fit in, though I have a long commute, so if I'm lucky enough to get a seat on the metro I try to read then too.

message 126: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (japjapjappii) Hi! I'm totally new to reading classics. But I'll try my best. My book shelf hasn't been stuffed with any of that sort but I'm finding what book to start first. I was actually reading Jane Eyre but I haven't finished it yet - might start all over again or choose a different book. Thanks for having me here! ;)

message 127: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Tapia | 2 comments Hello my name is Shannon T. and I teach highschool drama. I enjoy reading and I want to cover the classics as well as my own picks. Just downloaded 1984 and look foward to starting.

message 132: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Hello. My name is Tiffany and I am currently an English major. Obviously, I have to read a lot of classics for school, but I never read them in my spare time. I tend to read a lot of fantasy and horror on my own. I joined this club because I'd like to read some more classics without the pressure of exams and papers and the somewhat pretentious atmosphere of an academic classroom. I look forward to meeting all of you and discussing some great literature that broadens my horizons a bit.

message 133: by Coral (new)

Coral | 3 comments Hi all, my name is Coral. I'm a 34-yr old system analyst with a love of learning and reading. I honestly don't have many people in my life I can discuss books with, so I thought I would give this group a try! I love reading the classics, and my other favorite genre is sci-fi and/or dystopian societies.

message 135: by Nikki (new)

Nikki | 2 comments Hey everyone I'm Nikki, currently a college student and bibliophile. I have always had a love for the classics. It's usually hard to find someone who wants to talk about Wuthering Heights or the Brothers Karamozov so I'm really glad I stumbled upon this group! I look forward to discussing some great books with everyone!

message 136: by Fabiano (new)

Fabiano | 2 comments Hi everyone!
I am brazilian and a beginner on reading classic (now in english) I am here to learn more about the classics. I love to read things that instead of the story that tell us has it's own story. I start to think about the age when it was written, those people who lived that way... I guess reading in english will help me with the language as a way to improve my knowledge, and this group will help me see how i am doing with my habilities on sharing thoughts with foreigners.

Welcome to the group Michelle! That is the same reason that I actually started this group with Jenn. I always intended to read the classics. I read some in school, but never got around to reading any more. Jenn, however, loves classics and has read a lot and wants to read more. So we are both getting to read what we wanted.

I am in the same boat... I imagine most of us are. How does that Twainism go? "Classics: Books that everyone wants to have read, but no one want to actually read." Hopefully this group will help us all get past that!

Welcome to our group Jit! You can start reading the classics with this month's book 1984 and join in our group discussions. Check the comments under what are you reading to see what others are reading to get ideas on other classics to read or look at the group's list of books in the bookshelf. Hope you enjoy reading the classics with us.

message 147: by Heather (last edited Jul 01, 2012 11:14PM) (new)

Heather | 2 comments Hi fascinating people! I have a question...I want desperately to read the classics Pride and Prejudice, The House of the Seven Gables, The Scarlet Letter & the House of the Seven Gables, Jane Eyre, etc....but I get so lost in translation I can't make it past the first few pages. What is the secret to understanding this all0but-lost version of the English language? I'm no good at Shakespeare either....The words tousle me around and spit me out with something that resembles a cross between pig latin and klingon :) Any suggestions?

message 148: by Alexandria (new)

Alexandria (msalimarie20) | 6 comments you're tackling half the books I am this summer. sparknotes helps me. It gives me a chapter summary and analysis. That's just what helped me

message 149: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 627 comments I'm with Alexandria. I read a section then read the summary and analysis in spark notes. Helps me a great deal and keeps the story more interesting in the parts that drag on.

message 150: by Heather (new)

Heather | 2 comments hmmm...I've never tried Sparknotes...Is that the same as Cliff Notes? I really want to understand what the heck they are saying and why these books are considered classics....too bad I want to read way more than I have time for :)
