Kristi (kristicoleman) Looks like we are ready to roll!

Wendy (inotherwords) Yeah!! I'm excited to get started! I read this in August 2011 and finished the remaining books in the series by October 2011. I'm looking forward to this re-read and the discussion.

Suzanne (thysanura) Woohooo!

message 5: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Is this for all five books or A song of fire and ice?

message 6: by Ronyell (new) - added it

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) This is great!! I actually have this book on my TBR list!

message 7: by Martha (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) Leslie, this is for the first book in the series. Although I hope we can eventually read them all!

Sera I finally started this last night, and I am loving it.

Deana (ablotial) Woo hoo! looks great Kristi :) Can't wait to start discussing this one.

message 10: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Thanks Martha! I read most of this one, then saw the HBO series, and realized that I had missed a lot of the intrigue, so I am starting it over.

Becky I just finished this book back in October maybe? I'm about to finish the third and move on to the fourth soon. I am literally blown away by Martin. I love the characters, even the ones I hate ! :D

message 12: by Kristi (last edited Jan 06, 2012 10:51AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kristi (kristicoleman) That's how I felt too! Even the "bad" characters you find yourself loving! These books are just GOOD!

Becky They're very tangible characters. No one is one-sided, you can sympathise and despise everyone at some point.

Wendy (inotherwords) What are the chances of reading the entire series as a group or will we be only reading A Game of Thrones and then moving on to something else?

message 15: by Sera (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sera Wendy, we can always read the series as a side read with those folks who are interested if the rest of the books in the series aren't chosen as a full group read. We would just need to let the moderators know.

I, for one, would be interested. I'm hopeful that others would be as well.

message 16: by Martha (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) I'm interested, too, but have many other books lined up for this year so will have to see how my schedule is after we finish these and a buddy read.

Kristi (kristicoleman) Wendy wrote: "What are the chances of reading the entire series as a group or will we be only reading A Game of Thrones and then moving on to something else?"

If we don't do it as the main group read we could always set it up as a side read...

Loretta (lorettalucia) Wendy wrote: "What are the chances of reading the entire series as a group or will we be only reading A Game of Thrones and then moving on to something else?"

I think it would be a bit off-putting to members who aren't interested in this series if we devote 2 years (which is probably how long it would take, given our pace and the fact that the books only get longer from here) to reading the entire series. It would be like saying we read one Classic Chunkster and one "A Song of Ice and Fire" Chunkster at a time.

Of course, reading them as side reads is another matter, but I don't know that having the series as our main read would be helpful to the group as a whole.

message 19: by Martha (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) I agree, Loretta. Not everyone will love it.

Deana (ablotial) Completely agree! Though I am sure I will want to read the whole series, I know there are a lot of people who would not be interested and be put off by never getting a chance to read something different. I would love to have reading partners to help me push through the remaining books though.

message 21: by Martha (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) I'm interested in continuing the series after this one and I'm sure there are others who will be.

message 22: by Sera (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sera We read Pillars of the Earth as a side read (moderated by Loretta), and it was a great experience. I think that we could do the same with this series. I agree that it wouldn't be fair to those not reading this series to make it a continuous group read.

Amanda I've been trying to reread this along with everybody via audio book, but I'm afraid I've had to give up! I really cannot get along with the narrator! I have an idea in my head of how all the characters would sound and it's just being read all wrong! Unfortunately I don't have the time to catch up in print right now.

Deana (ablotial) The narrator really does make all the difference in the world!

Sera Deana wrote: "The narrator really does make all the difference in the world!"

I agree!

Amanda Deana wrote: "The narrator really does make all the difference in the world!"

Absolutely! The version I have is read by an older-sounding man whom I didn't find awfully engaging. If I didn't enjoy the books so much I might have stuck it out. Hoping everyone else is enjoying it!

As I expected was unable to keep on schedule! Finished the book last night. AMAZING. Cannot wait to continue to discuss it with everyone

message 28: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (bibliocrates) Hey y'all! Remember me?

I just bought this book this evening, and if it's as great as I keep hearing it is, I'm sure I will have no trouble at all catching up.

I haven't joined y'all in a group discussion since last year's The Stand by Stephen King. I moved back to Colorado from Alabama and with getting settled in, trying to find work, adjusting to all the changes, I really haven't been reading much. I miss it! I'm really excited!

How is everyone?

message 29: by Martha (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) Hi Amy! I lived in Colorado in the late 70s. It's beautiful, but then so is Alabama ... my mother's home state. AGoT is wonderful. I'm a bit behind, but hoping to catch up.

Kristi (kristicoleman) Hey Amy! I live in in CO too! What a big adjustment from Alabama! The book is really good, I bet you will love it. Join in when you get each section finished, can't wait to hear what you think!

message 31: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (bibliocrates) Hi Martha, Kristi! Yes, Colorado is beautiful. I've live here before, southern Colorado. Now, I'm in northern Colorado, much prettier, right by the mountains!

Are there going to be threads for the remaining sections for those of us that want to read ahead?

message 32: by Martha (last edited Feb 09, 2012 02:07PM) (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) Yes, but they don't get put up until that week. I'm so glad you're enjoying the book! I lived in Colorado Springs for 2 years. Loved it.

message 33: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (bibliocrates) Drat! Can't they be put up now? Please? I like to make my comments section by section, so as not to spoil anything. I really don't think I can stick to the schedule on this one. I'm hooked!

Martha, I also lived in Colorado Springs. My parents had a house in Cheyenne Meadows, can't beat the view there, gorgeous!

message 34: by Martha (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) We didn't have a very nice view, but took lots of drives. We lived in Widefield as my husband was stationed at Fort Carson for his last 2 years in the Army. I loved it out there. We camped near Pueblo many times.

message 35: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (bibliocrates) That's where I'm from, Pueblo. Northern Colorado is so much better than Pueblo!

Deana (ablotial) Amy - when I read ahead, I write my thoughts for each "ahead" section in a word file. Then when the post gets put up, I can just paste in what I thought from back then, and don't have to remember what I thought.

message 37: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy (bibliocrates) That's a good idea, Deana.

Smart.

Martha (marthas48) Looks like we're taking a break. :-) It's giving me a chance to read The Hunger Games! LOL I heard that Season 2 is starting tonight, but I don't have HBO right now. :-( Looks like I'll wait until I've read the 2nd book.

message 40: by Sera (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sera Really? Thought that it was April - aren't they still re-running Season 1? I don't know - asking to find out.

message 41: by Martha (new) - added it

Martha (marthas48) Maybe my friend was wrong. I hate to miss it, but would rather read the book first. I have a copy already.

Kristi (kristicoleman) I updated the schedule to reflect the little reading break last week. Let me know if we need another and I'll throw it in.
