Katy | 2662 comments Hello (:

I really liked Louise-Lesley's idea for group challenges, so I wanted to join in!

Unfortunately, having read all the books in her list, I couldn't! So I started thinking about what I could do as a challenge. I came up with this - Read more short stories! (I tend to avoid them as I enjoy getting to know a character)

I won't set a time limit, as I know how busy we all get, so let's get going! Anyone can recommend short stories for the group to read, or discuss what they have read! (:

ENJOY!

Katy | 2662 comments SUGGESTED:

-Sherlock Holmes
-Graham Greene
-Grimm fairy tales

Let's go!

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Yay!

My favourites are the classics; Sherlock Holmes & Graham Greene! Although Graham Greene is ridiculously hard to find, never mind on the Kindle.

There is a few lists on listopia for short stories too:

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Also have you read all the Grimm fairy tales? I'm sure they can be classed as short stories - love those!

message 5: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I haven't read them! I'll definitely get on it though! Thanks for the suggestions (: Why didn't think of Holmes?!

message 6: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I love Grimm tales !
Will add the shorts I read if I do.... Out of curiosity, what makes a short story a short story? Is it only the amount of words?

message 7: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Er. My comment won't post!!

That is a very interesting question! When does a short story become a novella? And when does a novella become a novel? Maybe someone has the answer in terms of word counts!

message 8: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments If I'm honest, I tend to avoid Novella's too!

message 9: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I think we may be the exact opposite. I'm currently reading a book that is by far one of the longest I've read voluntarily in quite some time (Part from 2 by my favourite 2 authors, ever!). I HATE long novels and will only read them when they promise to be so worth it.

Luckily so far this one is good.

I tend to go for short and sweet more :P

Only the person who writes a post can edit it, Katy. Sorry.

All Simon and I can do is delete it.

message 11: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments Oh okay! Thanks for that, Patti! (:

I've read a few books of short stories lately - they are good when you are busy because you can quickly read them between other things that you have to do! Don't forget to put A Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Gallimaufrey on the list! I've read most of it now, just two or three stories to go...

It's years since I read any Sherlock Holmes, I must give those another go!
:0)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments James Everington (one of 'our' authors) has a great book of short stories - The Other Room. They are described by him as 'wierd fiction' which sums them up. He is often described as 'horror' but I think this sells him short.

message 14: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I have all the Andrew Laing ones. Don't think I have anymore short stories...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments if you are into sciFi/Fantasy/Horror you could try Re Awakenings, an anthology of new Speculative Fiction

Cynan Jones (cynanjones) | 24 comments Hi all,

As per my recent bloggy bit in my author profile as per short stories, here are three collections I would not miss!

Last Night Stories by James Salter

Everything Ravaged Everything Burned by Wells Tower

Love and Other Possibilities by Lewis Davies

Of course, the other option is to read short novels! (Apparently, readers do not like them and they are not commercially viable! Right. Great Gatsby anyone...?)

Everything I Found On the Beach by Cynan Jones

The Long Dry by Cynan Jones

message 17: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Wait the Great Gatsby is short? Best news I've heard all day.

Cynan Jones (cynanjones) | 24 comments Ok - here we go, some less obvious ones:

Fup by Jim Dodge

1933 Was a Bad Year by John Fante

Utz by Bruce Chatwin

In the Winter Dark by Tim Winton

The Moon Is Down (Penguin Modern Classics) by John Steinbeck

(And my first one was only 28,000 words!)

Katy | 2662 comments Wow! Thanks Elle!

My exams are over now (thank god), so I will definitely have time to catch up on all these recommendations!

message 28: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments All 49p. I'm a bit bitter they didn't just put them together but then again they can make more money from them separately -.-

message 29: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Yay Katy !

message 30: by Katy (new)

Katy | 2662 comments I'd prefer to spend more money and have them all together! You're right, though. Amazon just want more money!

message 31: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I suppose it makes my book count look amazing~

message 39: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments Katy I have recently read 2 shorts and a novella by Kealan and he is IMO a master of the craft of short stories. One of the books even has a couple of sequels.
Another short story writer in our group is Beverley Carter,Ignite recommended her and she is also worth following up.

message 40: by Amos (new)

Amos Cassidy | 393 comments I love short stories but tend to go for the weird ones that make me shiver, for example 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill or you could try TALES FROM THE ETHER by Amos Cassidy - Oh yes that's us! Hee, hee!

message 41: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Shameless plug there AC ;o)

Just right though, if you don't do it who will?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm really pleased the Easter egg hunt bumped this thread. We have many excellent writers of short stories in our group.

Actually, I think it would be nice if the authors would give us links to their short stories here, as long as Katy doesn't mind?

Would anyone object to a bit of blatant self promo of short stories in here?

We could start a new thread for short story promos, if we think that would be better, of course.

I think that would be great! Short stories do not get enough credit IMO. There are some fantastic shorts available written by our very own GR authors. I like to download and keep them for those moments when I fancy a quick read, like on the bus, or with a cuppa before I pick the kids from school.
