I read the first chapter. :). It has a happy ending right? Like not the he broke up with me but I'm okay with it type of happy ending. I want to read it now!

I assure you it has a happy ending...no suicides, no overdoses, no disgraced forevers, no bloody breakups.

message 53: by Sam (new)

Sam | 30 comments I'm looking for a book with a trans* main character, especially one with a MtF/ transfeminine main character. If there's something that fits that description that's dystopian or fantasy, awesome, if not, that's cool too. I've read a fair amount of FtM stuff, but the only MtF YA book that comes to mind that I've read is Luna.
I'd prefer that the character either just happen to be trans* or the book to be about them being trans*, as opposed to the book being about them being the love interest and someone else questioning their sexuality because their love interest is trans*.

message 54: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Eliason (RachelEliason) | 121 comments Sam, my novel is about a trans main character (mtf) that is also a computer hacker. Their is a love interest of sorts in the story, but it's not about them. The novel covers their coming out but their is a lot more to the story than that. You might want to check it out:

Thanks! It would be cool if you could make sure it's listed in all the right places in our group bookshelves - I checked the m2f shelf and it's not listed there.

I didn't realize I hadn't put it there. Thanks for pointing that out.

message 57: by Danni (new)

Danni | 38 comments I would really love some recommendations for YA where the focus is very much on the romance. I realise that is quite broad, but just something really sweet and lovely about two boys falling in love. I've just read Safe and I would like something else like that. I've also read Without Sin which I loved too. Something romantic and sweet and sexy if possible please.

message 58: by Gino (new)

Gino Alfonso | 46 comments Hi Danni, try Boy Meets Boy, Dream Boy and The World of Normal Boys... Are you a guy Danni or a girl Danni?

message 59: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17284 comments maybe Play Me, I'm Yours, The Celestial (historical), Wide Awake, A Secret Edge, and definitely Boy Meets Boy.
Thinking Straight is about religion and being gay, but has a very sweet relationship in it. Rainbow Boys is also good.

Dream Boy has a sad ending just FYI.

message 60: by Danni (new)

Danni | 38 comments Thank you Gino, these look great, Dream Boy especially looks like just what I'm looking for. I will give them a try.

I'm a girl Danni :)

Any more suggestions would be much appreciated.

message 61: by Lissa (new)

Lissa (parisbvamp) | 64 comments Sam Kadence has a book that's just been accepted that focuses on the romance, but it won't be out till like Sept. It's called On the Right Track. Sadly no way to put that in your tbr pile yet.

Thanks Kaje, I've actually got a few of those listed as tbr already - will definitely try them out now.

Lissa - thanks for the suggestion :) September?!?!! Oh man, I can't wait the 30 seconds my kindle takes to download, let alone 5 months! Gulp ;)

Xan Rooyen | 22 comments Just read a fantastic dystopian novel featuring a male bisexual protagonist. The entire premise is that the government uses music to control the masses. It's a great read and the sexuality of the character is incidental. Coda (Coda #1) by Emma Trevayne

Very cool. I added it to the group bookshelf as "bi-characters" and "dystopian" - if you wanted to edit that to add other appropriate shelves that would be excellent.

message 65: by Miriasha (new)

Miriasha If anyone knows of books that have Beauty and the Beast storylines but with two girls/women, please tell me! I've already read Kissing the Witch Old Tales in New Skins by Emma Donoghue but I'm looking for more! It's kind of an obsession of mine for some reason :)

message 66: by Kaje (last edited Aug 02, 2013 09:21PM) (new)

Kaje Harper | 17284 comments Interesting. I know gay male versions (mainly adult) but not with two female MCs.

message 67: by Lade (new)

Lade (ladet) hi everyone, I'm looking for an LBGTQ book that has to do with faith or religion, humour or depression. It could be fiction or non fiction but I prefer non fiction

Scars also deals with depression and self-harm, although it is a pretty intense book and might be triggering for someone with concerns about abuse or self-harm. Well-written though.

A Really Nice Prom Mess is a pretty funny M/M book.

Both of those are fiction.

David Sedaris writes memoir/humor, although I won't vouch for how fictionalized it is. My favorite is Me Talk Pretty One Day

Prayers for Bobby: A Mother's Coming to Terms with the Suicide of Her Gay Son is a family memoir about religion, depression and suicide

New request!

I'm digging teacher/student romantic relationship storylines right now. I LOVEEED Where You Are by JH Trumble. Any suggestions?

message 71: by Kaje (last edited Sep 03, 2013 10:15PM) (new)

Kaje Harper | 17284 comments That's a difficult one, because it's ethically questionable and that makes it hard to write positively (other than erotica-type forbidden relationships). I'm not aware of any YA and LGBT other than that one. Maybe someone else does. Or mentor-student?

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm open to non-YA, non-erotica, I'd that opens any sort of door. And I agree, it's a touchy topic, but I'm for some reason very drawn to it. I second the expansion to mentor-student, if that helps. :)

message 73: by Gabby (new)

Gabby | 166 comments Ummm, I know one but it's not LGBT which I think is the whole point lol
Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead

Where You Are is a fantastic book. Can't think of anything like it. But Vampire Academy, whilst not LGBT YA, is a brilliant series and if you are liking that general theme you might just like this series :)

What about And Then I Met Him? It's a free online read. It's more student/mentor(tutor) and it's LGBT.
And Then I Met Him by L. Arthur

message 76: by Sam (new)

Sam | 30 comments I haven't actually read this one, but I remembered seeing the synopsis over on a LGBTQ YA books blog: Love & Lies: Marisol's Story Love & Lies Marisol's Story by Ellen Wittlinger (Blog post here: ) The one book I have read by that author, Parrotfish, was pretty good, but the reviews for this one seem pretty mixed.

It's not a huge storyline but I'd suggest Skim Skim by Mariko Tamaki

Come to think of it I'm not sure of any YA lesbian books that have come out in 2013. I have a few others to mention so here is hoping you find something you like! Hard to say if they will be available in your library or not, but it's worth keeping any eyes out for:

Adaptation just came out in soft cover - literally nabbed my copy today so it's fresh on the mind (2012)

Dare Me is pretty dark but a good mystery (also from 2012)

Between You & Me was not my cup of tea, but still worth mentioning just in case it works for you (lots of 2012 books haha)

Beauty Queens if you are okay with weird/silliness. Very feminist too! Also includes a transgender character (2011)

Tricks is not new, but it's not advertised to have a main lesbian character and I'm set to spread the word! XD (2009)

Here are a few that I have not read but look promising and were published in the past few years:
Starting From Here, Silhouette of a Sparrow, Kiss the Morning Star, Sister Mischief, The Difference Between You and Me, The You Know Who Girls: Freshman Year, It's Our Prom, Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom

message 82: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17284 comments In 2013 we have listings for
Twixt - F/F dark fantasy
That Witch! - high school
Finding Ashlynn - two girls from different backgrounds
Just for Kicks - fantasy (I'm not sure how F/F it is, but it was listed as LGBT)
The Road to Her - F/F romance
The Second Mango - fantasy

You can find older books as well on our F/F and lesbian bookshelves, and on this thread: YA books with F/F romance or lesbian characters

message 83: by Miriasha (new)

Miriasha I'd always suggest Malinda Lo.

Ooh, you just reminded me that Sarah Diemer (author of Twixt) also has a free f/f short story The Witch Sea and it's really cute. You can grab a copy .

PS. that is a great list, by the way! My TBR pile just got bigger. XP

Also f-f for 2013 is If You Could Be Mine by Sara Farizan.

message 90: by Rainbowheart (last edited Nov 21, 2013 10:28AM) (new)

Rainbowheart | 717 comments There's also f-f in The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson. This is super queer-themed because a good chunk of the characters are bi. The two lead guys are gay/bi and the MC's mom is married to another woman.

message 91: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 717 comments And another f-f romance for 2013 is Love In Revolution by B.R. Collins.

message 92: by Gabby (new)

Gabby | 166 comments I was just wondering if this group has a shelf for HEA or happy LGBT books, because I'm always looking for them because they're the ones that I enjoy the most. Does anyone know of some good ones? (Short stories and Novellas are okay too)

We don't, and you're right - that might be good. Almost all the group free stories tend to be happy (mostly HFN - happy for now - given how young the characters are.) We can add a shelf though... I'll link it in a minute.

My favorites might include -
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Sock it to Me, Santa!
Rainbow Boys trilogy
Thinking Straight
Social Skills (16+ for sex)
Know Not Why
Pretty Shade of Grey
The Celestial
Boy Meets Boy

I don't read enough F/F stories and most I've read are like Keeping You a Secret or Annie on My Mind, the older ones (mea culpa), to make good recommendations but I'm sure you will get some from other readers here.

message 94: by Kaje (last edited Nov 30, 2013 11:41AM) (new)

Kaje Harper | 17284 comments I added a shelf - happy-romantic-end ; so far I only put one book on it to make sure it worked, but feel free to add this tag to appropriate books as you shelve or edit them. Unfortunately on GR, you have to add shelf-tags to books, not books to shelves, so this tag has to be added to each book where it applies, and I don't have time ATM to do that. But anyone can add it where it fits.

I found one! Actually, two. It's FTM rather than MTF, but it's fantasy post-apocalyptic, and the character being trans is not at all the focus of the story. Check out Love in the Time of Global Warming and The Island of Excess Love by Francesca Lia Block.

message 98: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17284 comments :) Great.

message 99: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 717 comments And another one for people looking for transgender fantasy...

Eon: Dragoneye Reborn and Eona by Alison Goodman

It's a gender bender since the MC is a girl pretending to be a guy so she can do magic, but there is also an important MTF character in both books named Lady Dela.

message 100: by Rainbowheart (last edited Dec 07, 2013 12:56AM) (new)

Rainbowheart | 717 comments Another transgender paranormal....

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

An important character named Valentina is MTF.
