V.R. Christensen (vrchristensen) Snappy quote to come.

V.R. Christensen (vrchristensen) As promised, a snappy quote! And boy is this scene full of them!

Giants of both sexes are, by a wise dispensation of Providence, created, for the most part, gentle. If Mrs. Wragge and a lamb had been placed side by side, comparison, under such circumstances, would have exposed the lamb as a rank impostor.

I wish I could write like that. It's clever, eloquent and funny all at once. I like Mrs. Wragge. I do not like Mr. Wragge and it is because of Mrs. Wragge I dislike him. What an interesting way to characterise someone, through another person. I think that's rather brilliant, really. Not because of what Mrs. Wragge things or says about her husband, but because of how she is because of him. Very interesting.

Now observe! There are many varieties of Rogue; let me tell you my variety, to begin with. I am a Swindler. ... Swindler. Definition: A moral agriculturist; a man who cultivates the field of human sympathy.

The captain cleared his throat; mentally assembled his entire army of words--horse, foot, artillery, and reserves; put himself at the head; and dashed into action, to carry the moral intrenchments of Society by a general charge.

After which, he rationalises his modus operandi. Which I think is very clever and very well said, and why not? He is only making sure we as a society fulfill our moral duty.

I think I met Mr. Wragge last Friday evening, actually.

Marialyce Yes, he is a "piece of work" as the saying goes. It always amazes me that people such as he can justify what they do and make it sound as if they are altruistic and have humankind in their heart and mind. The captain and his wife's relationship is so odd. Was she like this before or did he make her the simpleton she is now?

Well, let's hope Magdalen is savvy enough to use the captain as much as he intends to use her. Interesting how Collins has probably made this rogue into a main character. I would not have thought he would assume Magdalen's education in the dramatic arts. He is a sly and cunning man so Magdelen best be always on her guard.

V.R. Christensen (vrchristensen) Yes, he's a scoundrel, through and through. And if he were truly interested in Magdalene, even if it were for the money he might get her, I might forgive him. But as he'll chance sides in a heartbeat I'd like to see him thoroughly thrown over. Magdalen clearly has her eye on him, but I'm not sure it's going to be enough, after all.

Of course we can't know, but my feeling is Mrs. W. is mostly like that because of him. I'd like to see her be restored by Magdalene's care. Again that's useless speculation, but still.

Silver Though Captain Wragge cannot be trusted, I have to say that I find Captain Wragge and Magdalene make a rather amusing pair of partners in crime as it where.

I do feel sorry for Mrs. Wragge, it had been my initial presumption that she was always like that and that Mr. Wragge had chosen her because of her simplemindedness because he would figure that way his wife would not question him or what he does. Though it could have been marriage with him that had made her as thus.

V.R. Christensen (vrchristensen) I think she was probably always simple, but I think it's he that makes her...I don't want to use the word hysterical, but she's a mess and I think it's owing to him. Her nervousness and agitation, at any rate. I like her, though.

I agree with you about Wragge and Magdalen. They are bound to give each a run for the other's money.
