I have already read this one, but I will probably follow along with the discussion. This one was my favorite of Sarah Addison Allen's books.

Questions for Chapters 1-3

1.) What do you think possessed the club to start spouting out secrets at the meeting and why was Paxton able to fight it?
It sounds like it has to do with a bit of magic.

2.) Fancy man. Sebastian. Gay or not gay??
I think that he is. If he isn't it would surprise me. Usually when guys experiment like that in high school, they end up being gay. I could be completely wrong though.

3.) Do you think Willa will end up going to the gala?
I think she will. I think she is going to decide to go at the last minute and surprise everyone.

4.) What secret(s) do you think were buried that Agatha talks about? And could they be physically buried or do you think she was using it as a figure of speech?
I read the blurb on the book, so I know it is physical. I think with physical secrets though, there are always emotional secrets as well. I am interested to know the whole story.

5.) Georgie says "peach" twice. Could the tree at Blue Ridge Madam be a peach tree?
I am not sure what kind of tree it is, but it seems likely.

1.) What do you think possessed the club to start spouting out secrets at the meeting and why was Paxton able to fight it?

I agree with Laura, it sounds like something magical was happening in the town. Not just because of the strange urge to spit out secrets, but also because of the whole disappearing reappearing invitations.

2.) Fancy man. Sebastian. Gay or not gay??

I'd speculate gay or a metrosexual.

3.) Do you think Willa will end up going to the gala?

I'm guessing the gala has something significant with what is going on so I think so.

4.) What secret(s) do you think were buried that Agatha talks about? And could they be physically buried or do you think she was using it as a figure of speech?

I'll go with what Laura said. It's something physical. I would think that is somewhat of a spoiler in the synopsis, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if it truly is.

5.) Georgie says "peach" twice. Could the tree at Blue Ridge Madam be a peach tree?

Does anyone have this in eBook format? I'd love to know if we could find out how many times overall peach is mentioned in the book and who the Peach keeper is. You may be right Rachel, I didn't even wonder about the tree.

I loved this little banter! I sure hope so. I think they are a perfect match.

7) What do you think about Willa being the Walls of Water High School Joker and the story that goes with it?
It was a bit surprising. It didn't seem to fit with the image painted of her in the first chapter. It does make her character more likeable though. I am hoping we learn more about her father and grandmother.

Well, I'm so confused abut Sebastion. That sounds like an innuendo doesn't it?
I was confused too. I am now leaning towards him just being metro sexual. It sounded a lot like an innuendo to me.

I thought it was a bit creepy and didn't really fit with my picture of the type of decor Sebastian would have in his house. It made me wonder what type of grandmother he had.

I can't wait to hear more about this whole murder thing.

11) What's your first impressions of Paxton and Willa?
I am surprised that they didn't become friends sooner. It seems like they would make great friends. I like them both but I think Willa has the more interesting story.

What did you think of Sebastion's reaction to Paxton's almost attacking him? It didn't sound exactly like he was saying no, but it didn't exactly sound like a yes????
I thought maybe he was just trying to make her feel better, but at the same time it seems like maybe he really does like her. Their relationship is so confusing! I am glad that she stopped because I think she would have regreted her actions if she didn't first know his feelings. I do need to pay more attention to the chapter headings. Good point, Lisarenee.

It may be a ghostly presence that affects only the weakest of minds.

I think he is gay. I am not so sure about Paxton either. Is Sebastian the one she is love with? it that is the case it would be too obvious.

3.) Do you think Willa will end up going to the gala?

Sure. I think it will be one of the pivotal parts in the story.

4.) What secret(s) do you think were buried that Agatha talks about? And could they be physically buried or do you think she was using it as a figure of speech?

Physically buried. At least that is what the synopsis says

I think so. The synopsis does say skeleton found buried beneath the property’s lone peach tree

I want them to end up as a couple. They kind of seem perfect for each other

7) What do you think about Willa being the Walls of Water High School Joker and the story that goes with it?

I think she was trying to make an impression with all those pranks. She seems obsessed with her heritage may be she was trying to be a part of history, to show that she had it in her. Her father may have been trying to make her feel guilty by lying that he lost his job because of her.

I does sound like an innuendo. I reread the lines a couple of times just to be sure. He is very confusing I am starting to think he is not gay.

He did say it belonged to his great aunt. May be she was friends with Paxton and Willa's grandmothers. Is it just me or does the old society have a Coven feel to it.

Willa seems interesting but I am not much of a big fan of spineless characters so not much interested in Paxton

Paxton wants a fairy tale life with everything perfect. To an outsider her life looks like a fairytale but her very need for perfection is driving her crazy. Regarding Sebastian I had my doubts whether he is the guy Paxton is really interested in, I thought she only saw him as a friend. But now that I know he is the one she is interested in I think he is making her work for it. To show in some way that she is really interested in him

#7-Interesting thought. Willa didn't strike me as the type of person who needed attention, but I like the idea of her trying to be apart of history. I think that does suite her.

#9- Your right, it was his great-aunt! I kept thinking it was his grandmother for some reason.

I hadn't thought that before but now I am. Hmm....

She also said, " To an outsider her life looks like a fairytale but her very need for perfection is driving her crazy."

I've met people like that and I always wonder if its an act or they truly do lead a perfect life. I usually doubt it.

13) So chapter 7 is named Relativity. And it was significant chapter name. I think it was the author's way of hinting that Tucker was related somehow to someone whom later in this section of reading we learn is Willa. Or do you think the author was trying to establish how things are connected?

15) Paxton seems to come to a realization about the Women's Society Club. She decides it's a superficial club that does as little as it can then brags and celebrates. Do you think she's going to stop being perfect? Do you think she might change? First the attack on Sebastion, then the drinking and now this. I wonder. Instead of being who everyone wants or thinks her to be could she perhaps gain a back bone and this is the turning point? Now that would be fun to see.

Seems appropriate since it sounded like there were a lot of parties.I like the glimpse of Georgie and Agatha in this chapter that the stories and photos paint. What did you make of Willa's vision of the party? Did she somehow experience it herself or just her imagination gone wild?

I think it could have been a bit of both. It seems like most of the chapter names have double meanings.

I wasn't really shocked. I figured it was either Georgie or Agatha that killed him.

15) Paxton seems to come to a realization about the Women's Society Club. She decides it's a superficial club that does as little as it can then brags and celebrates. Do you think she's going to stop being perfect? Do you think she might change? First the attack on Sebastion, then the drinking and now this. I wonder. Instead of being who everyone wants or thinks her to be could she perhaps gain a back bone and this is the turning point? Now that would be fun to see.
I am hoping to see her change. I don't want he to continue to be walked all over. I also want her to see that the Club is not doing anything to help her and maybe it is time to move on from the Club. I think her transformation is definitely interesting and I got a chuckle from the drunken convenience store scene. I could just see them now in my head.

I think she was letting her imagination go wild, so much so that she was able to experience the feelings of it. I have done the same thing before. I am really loving this book, even though it is a story that has been told before, it is being done in a different way. The author definitely paints a picture.

I think its interesting. The author keeps using trees as metaphors for the character's emotions. Willa's father and his charisma was also compared to a peach. It is a unique way to connect the story together.

I don't think he is gay either. I think his upbringing caused him to look for acceptance anywhere he could find it. He experimented and then realized who he was and I don't think it was gay.

I don't think we do. I think there is still more to find out.

I didn't give much thought to the chapter name at first. But now that you have mentioned I think it somehow deals with Tucker's relation to Willa. Or may be it just deals with the different effect Tucker had on people. Relativity by definition deals with a thing in with respect to another.

Not much. I pretty much thought either Agatha or Georgie did the killing.

Yes it would be. She is changing already. May be this book is more about character development than mystery. Both Willa and Paxton need to change and accept who they are.

I would bet on her imagination going wild. She was so focussed on learning more about her grandmother that she might have imagined her the way she wanted her to be

Yes, if what Agatha says is true and Tucker is Willa's grandfather she may have inherited some of his mysterious powers she kept talking about. In which case Willa is completely ignorant about her heritage

I am still not sure. I know he is rebelling but he seemed too confused with his feelings.

No, I don't think so. There is more to this story than what Agatha said. Did any one else notice the appearance of a black and yellow bird in particular situation. One was when they discovered the skeleton. The other when Paxton wakes up in Willa's couch. Willa also has her encounter with this bird. Is it significant in some way?

I did notice that! I was wondering if it had any significance. You know it also mentioned that the bird in that creepy painting was also black and yellow. I wonder if the bird is Mr. Develin's ghost?

I didn't notice that the bird in the painting was black and yellow. That changes things. Do you think Sebastian's great aunt was in on it?

I think the bird is Mr. Devlin or Sebastian's great aunt I think I am obsessed with her. It seems a bit strange that after all these strange experiences people allowed Mr. Devlin to stay. What year was the witch trials anyway? I seem to be lost in the timeline.

2. It seems like everyone in town back in the 30's had something to do with Devlin. Do you think he really could perform magic, or do you think it was just his personality?
People believe what they want to believe. May be they did't want to believe that they were taken in by a con man so he was turned into a magician. Who knows? But there are a number of things happening in the present which seem to support the theory that he could perform magic.

3. What did you think of the love potion idea? Were you surprised that Paxton admitted to Sebastian what she thought about doing? What do you think about him not responding to what she saw him doing in High School?

When she admitted to Sebastian about the love portion idea I kept thinking its about time. Then the way Sebastian responded was a bit odd. I think that he has trouble letting go of the image that he has created for himself. I think he deliberately uses the words lovely and beautiful in a sentence to confuse people.

4. Being a coffee person myself, I found Rachel's thoughts on coffee and love to be interesting. Do you agree with her? Do you think coffee is like love, even if you don't drink it?

Gee.. can't comment on that. I am not much of a coffee drinker nor do I know much about love other than what I read in books

5. Chapter Thirteen has a very interesting title: The Joker, the Stick Man, the Princess, and the Freak. Do you think they all learned something about themselves or each other in this chapter? What did you think of the sudden need to leave? Are they all avoiding the truth's about themselves?

I think what they learned was no matter how hard they try they can't escape from being what they are and that upsets them somehow.

Nope, I am as confused as ever regarding Sebastian. Guess I will have to wait till the end of this book to understand.

Laura's Questions Chapters 11-13

1.What did you think of the story about the painting? This bird keeps showing up everywhere. Do you think the bird is trying to keep Mr. Devlin away from everyone's mind, or do you think the bird is evil and is trying to keep him alive?

Hopefully we'll find out. Could be symbolism or something else. If we knew which type of bird and it was always the same we could look it up, but I think it isn't one in particular. I did find this, but I'm not sure it applies yet:

Middle Eastern and Asian cultures often speak of birds as symbols of immortality. In East Indian myth, every bird in the world represents a departed soul, and in Christian art, birds often appear as saved souls"

Everyone seems to believe he could. I don't know.

I'm soooooo confused.

I think it's a stretch, but I thought it was cute.

That's who they were but its not who they are now. Now, like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, they need to find where they fit together. Their shapes have changed, edges have been smoothed while others have been roughened and what was once apart will now come together I think.

I feel like I'm in the middle of a tennis match. He is , no he isn't, yes he is, no he isn't. Anyone got a flower handy???? Maybe that will solve things.

I'm on the "Sebastian isn't gay" team. There's just no way. Even though he dresses well no completely gay man would let the opportunity arise to kiss a woman or be confused about said woman. I think he's like everyone else in this book. trying to let go of who everyone saw him to be, but finding it easier to keep up the mask instead of fashioning a new one.

I didn't even think of that as a possibility, but since she supposedly created magic with her food it could have been a nice direction to take the story.

I think he was around as a ghost since Agatha was pretty much talking to him when the nurse brough her dinner and again when she said it felt like he was gone.

I certaintly think he did. My favorite was the "someone my mom doesn't like". Haha.

I think he wanted to have everyone to himself. He wanted to run the show.

I think he was dead all along. Georgie hit him with the frying pan and when she ran to Agatha's house and Agatha went back with her he was dead so they threw him out the window. I can see where broken bones and such from being pitched out the window would make it look like he fell to the coroner and cops.

I wasn't especting it at all, but I was proud of her. I would've done the same.

Again, I was really proud of her. Seemed when she started having a real friend she grew a backbone.

The Joker, the Stick Man, the Princess, and the Freak. It was pretty much the last chapter we saw them all that way. It's like they grew up.

It was ok. I wasn't completely bored but not completely estatic over it either. I felt some things just didn't fit like... the peaches, the birds, the weird blurting out of secrets. I understand how they all fit in with Devlin and such, but I found those things to be awkward together. I also didn't feel connected to any of the characters. I gave it a 2.

34) What did you think of the ending?

That was probably the best part of this book. I'm glad everyone seemed happy and on their way to becoming who they really were.

Here I was disappointed. I thought the birds meant more than what they turned out to be. Also there is a lot left without explanation such as the painting and the particular coloring of the bird

I don't know. We don't get that much insight into Sebastian's character. May be Paxton doesn't care any more,even if he doesn't meet all the criteria. Since I love food, I am going to say my favorite item on the list "is being a good cook". I know limited imagination

There are stories like this where devil comes to a peaceful village with kind hearted people and appeals to there most darkest desires and there by bringing about their ruin. In such a sense I would have to agree he was pure evil

May be when Tucker died people started coming into their senses making Agatha realize the injustice that was done to her best friend

I don't approve of the move. Instead of quitting Paxton could have reformed the group from the inside

About time. It was evident that she was unhappy living with her parents and needed to take control of her life. Can't say I am surprised with her move

The Joker, the Stick Man, the Princess, and the Freak. I was pretty tired by the time I reached this Chapter and couldn't keep my eyes open but the chapter heading made me want to keep on reading at least till the end of that chapter. Also that is the only one I still remember

I think I will rate it 3 stars. The book wasn't bad it did hold my attention but it is not much of an extraordinary story and there were a great number of flaws and plot holes. I am still not satisfied with all the answers that I got

I for sure thought there was going to be some sort of connection, but of course, I was wrong. I was disappointed also.

I think Tucker was around as a ghost. I think the birds leaving out of the tree was a symbolism of him leaving for good as he realized that he had lost his hold there.

I think he did, otherwise I don't think she would have compromised. She doesn't seem like the type. I think being a good cook was my favorite also. I love cooking shows and I aspire to be a better cook someday.

I think he may have been jealous of friendships. We don't really know much about his background so there is no telling what his motives were. I think people's experiences help to shape them.

Again, she is finally coming into her own. I am glad that she is done letting people stomp all over her and tell her what to do.
