L (suddenexpression) How about Cast On Kill Off? I'd link to the book but I'm on the app and have no idea how.

message 52: by Isabel (new)

Isabel Knitty is recommending [sort of] this:

message 53: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 3 comments I'll add [The Goldfinch](book) as a suggestion for 2014

message 54: by Isabel (new)

Isabel I'd second the motion the The Goldfinch!!

I'll add that! And Barbara, just FYI, the linking process doesn't work the same way here as it does on Ravelry (sadly). I still think Ravelry is one of the best websites ever - even if you're not a knitter! (Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ could learn a thing or two from them, frankly).

So, how do I get the book to show up here?

Barbara, just above the text box where you type your comment there's a link "add book/author". It lets you choose whether to add just the book title or a picture of the cover.

Rebecca (hopgal) | 2 comments I listen to audiobooks while I am knitting, so I am recommending one here. Mary And O'Neil by Justin Cronin. It's new in audio at my library. Not knitting-related, but there is mention of a wool sweater in the blurb, does that count? A terrific author.

ETA: Just happened upon this fun biography by Kathy Griffith's Mother: Tip It! by accident. That might be fun! And now I have to add another disc to my Netflix Q, which is still not as long as my Ravelry Q. :-)

message 63: by Isabel (new)

Isabel Here's one that I'd love to see for our selection process:

/book/show/2...

struggling to paste the cover image....sorry.

Rebecca, we take any and all books here - we love knitting books, but read plenty of unrelated stuff too! Keep the suggestions coming!

MaggieBelize wrote: "Not knitting related either, but I just finished The Cuckoo's Calling, a detective mystery by "Robert Galbraith" (aka J K Rowling) and I *loved* it. Can't wait for the next in the series!"

Maggie, I had no idea that was going to be the beginning of a series, very interesting. Poor thing, despite efforts for anonymity, I'm sure all the reprints will say JK ROWLING! and then in small print (writing as Robert Galbraith).

So many good knitting books popping up too, it's like another fall!
Knitting Yarns Writers on Knitting by Ann Hood

Adventures in Yarn Farming Four Seasons on a New England Fiber Farm by Barbara Parry

I'm having a terrible case of "Wanttoreadallofthebookseverpublished" -itis. Yikes!

Fixintoknit | 14 comments Zoe, I bought Adventures in Yarn Farming several months ago. Oh my, what a beautiful book and what lovely writing. It's not really a pattern book but does include some patterns, and I am itching to cast on a few of those.

I've been dipping into childrens/teen fiction, and a couple are worth book club consideration.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children, #1) by Ransom Riggs

Wonder by R.J. Palacio and fascinated by some non-fiction books I've heard about.

Scarcity Why Having Too Little Means So Much by Sendhil Mullainathan and

AWOL The Unexcused Absence of America's Upper Classes from Military Service -- and How It Hurts Our Country by Kathy Roth-Douquet

And this looks good too!
Empty Mansions The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune by Bill Dedman

and everyone is reading Jo Nesbo!
The Snowman (Harry Hole, #7) by Jo Nesbø

Ahhh! Help! Too many books!

I LOVED "Miss Peregrine" and the sequel is out now as well.I have it on my Kindle, but had to finish some others first.

message 74: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 10 comments These are great suggestions. Jo Nesbo has been on my radar for a while now but I haven't ready any yet. Empty Mansions looks really good, in fact I might pick that up for a Father's Day gift and get one for myself as well.
I would like to read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children too. I seem to remember hearing about this book before and being interested in it but then I guess it slipped my mind.
Thanks again for the great suggestions!

message 75: by Mardy (new)

Mardy (beachbabymom) | 10 comments I just started reading "The Supremes..." and I was hooked from the opening sentence! I'll try to find Empty Mansions for July, but highly recommend this book for another month. That opinion may change as I get further in, but I doubt it...

Rachel wrote: "Here are a few ideas:

The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat

Isabel I can't work out how this might fit into the current alpha-alliteration thing that's going on this year, but I think "Black River" by S.M. Hulse is a great group read.

We're using the alphabet to help us make decisions when we're challenged. That doesn't mean we can't step outside the box. :) thanks for the suggestion.

message 78: by Alcornell (new)

Alcornell | 21 comments Thoughts for November:

"this isn't so much a retelling of Wuthering Heights as a complement to it." Nelly Dean by Alison Case

also, any Jo Nesbo book;
The Leopard (Harry Hole, #8) by Jo Nesbø
The Snowman (Harry Hole, #7) by Jo Nesbø

message 79: by Alcornell (new)

Alcornell | 21 comments ...and suggestions from previous months look tempting too!

Mary Jung (mkjfrj) | 30 comments I think I already voted for Uprooted - if I didn't, I'd like to now.

message 83: by Alcornell (new)

Alcornell | 21 comments Will a poll go out? I don't know if I've got the choosing process figured out. I got my preferences on GR reset so I will receive polls...missed it last time.

Had another thought about book choices, though I see Uprooted is liked by some.

The Nature of the Beast (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #11) by Louise Penny

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

No word from Rachel, so I'll put up a quick poll, a mix of picks from this page and one or two of my own. Thanks for your patience, kids ;-)

message 86: by Christy (new)

Christy | 4 comments I heard a podcast that mentioned this is the 200-year anniversary of Emma by Jane Austen. In December, even (if I'm remembering correctly). I enjoy most everything Austen; Mansfield Park and Emma being
my least favorites. That interview got me thinking it's time re-evaluate with another reading of Emma.
