ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments Yup this is a weird one! But very challenging!

Explanation:
Ever do a secret santa or xmas exchange?
This is JUST like that, except instead of a gift you will be giving the person, it will be the choice of BOOK they must read for the month.

We will be doing this via sign ups, then the names will be randomly done and assigned.
Whatever name you get, you choose the book they must read, preferably the book chosen should not be in their TBR list. This is the whole point of the challenge! ;)
After the book is read they will post that they are done as well as how they liked the book chosen, with a short or long review.

Post in this thread if you are interested please! Also post with questions if you are unsure.
(clearly mark that you are playing in your post please also!)
BOOK CHOOSER - > PARTICIPANT

Tosca - > Tricia (Tosca has chosen Dreamwalker by Kathleen Dante)

Glori - > Yz (Glori has chosen You Slay Me Aisling Grey Guardian) by Katie MacAlister)

Stephanie - > Sarah (Steph has chosen Full Moon Rising by Keri Arthur)

New_User - > Melissa (New_User has chosen Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione)

Melissa - > Cheryl (Melissa has chosen Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton)

Lara - > Sheree (Lara has chosen White Lies by Jayne Ann Krentz)

Nikki - > Tosca (Nikki has chosen A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole)

Sarah - > Amanda (Sarah has chosen Touch the Dark by Karen Chance)

Jael - > Kasia (Jael has chosen The Becoming by Jeanne C Stein)

Yz - > Jael (Yz has chosen Hell's Belles by Jackie Kessler)

Sheree - > Lori (Sheree has chosen Claiming the Courtesan by Anna Campbell)

Tricia - > Nikki (Tricia has chosen Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K Hamilton)

Kasia - > Stephanie (Kasia has chosen The Host by Stephenie Meyer)

Lori - > New_User (Lori has chosen Blood Ties Book One The Turning by Jennifer Armintrout)

Cheryl - > Lara (Cheryl has chosen If You Dare by Kresley Cole)

Amanda - > Glori (Amanda has chosen Twilight by Stephenie Meyer)

To explain this is NOT pairs. One person chooses for another person in the group. All names have been chosen out of the virtual hat (so to speak)

The arrow after your name is who you are choosing the book for.

Now lets have some fun!

Sarah | 367 comments Sign me up, too...with the caveat that I'd like to join for Feb. This month is tied up with Yz's original challenge over in the PNR group. I don't know if I can fit any more in for this month!

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments Ya lets just plan this for feb.=D

In future months we will put the post up a few days before the next month begins and leave it for a few days to let everyone sign up.

Lori (moderatrixlori) sign me up!

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments We can use that as a basis to go on Kenjii.. though everyone would have to keep that list super up to date hehe

Or we can just keep it to the Romance Genre. What do you guys think?

message 14: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (last edited Jan 17, 2009 08:56AM) (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Tricia,

Here is a suggestion:

I think the picker will limit herself to what the other person has on her TBR shelf here on GR. I think that will simplify things. As for the genre, I think it will not matter, as long as the reader had put it on her TBR list it is assumed that she would want to read it.

What do you think?

Also you would probably put a deadline for signing up, so you can do your "matching" that will allow pickers to check the shelves, select the books, and give the readers time to get their copies.

Tricia...this is a great idea...good job!

message 15: by ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË (last edited Jan 17, 2009 08:59AM) (new)

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments Sounds good if everyone is ok with that :) I will have to update my list I think to make sure mine is good to go! lol

Though I was thinking that wouldnt be much of a challenge if its something they already planned on reading hehe. I was thinking this could help us find new authors and books we might not know about by reading something someone else might think we like based on our TBR list.

Hmmm...actually...you got a point there, Tricia. Maybe I spoke too fast...I actually like that idea, too.

Maybe, we can leave it to the picker if she wants to pick one from the reader's TBR shelf or recommend a book that is totally new to the reader...

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments Ya, I am sure most will probably pick from the TBR but it should be known that it could be ANY romance book :)
As long as it fits the Romance theme of the group :)

message 18: by Nikki (new)

Nikki ♥ Sign me up too ;)

message 19: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyfraser65) | 772 comments Yz, Tricia & Co, My problem is that I don't have my TBR pile on this site. I only put my library books on the 'to read' and everything else is used for keeping a track of what I've read etc. My TBR is all on Librarything.com

message 20: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments No sweat, LibraryLass. The one who ends with your name will just have to be creative on what book she will pick for you...LOL..I'm sure anybody in the group will be up for the challenge...and I'm sure you won't mind being surprised...LOL

message 21: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) If you don't mind my 2 cents...I think it's more fun if we don't pick from the person's TBR list. That's like asking someone to choose a gift from a list you've already provided them. I think you could use their TBR list as a way to get a feel for what they might like but I think you should pick something out for them that is not something they may have considered on their own. It's a way of stretching them to try something new. But, you should first check to make sure that the book is readily available and not too hard to find.

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments Agreed Lori :) I think it will make for a better challenge that way :)

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

sign me up.. sounds like fun..

message 24: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1245 comments Maybe we should be picking something we ourselves have just recently read. That way we are sure to have at least one person to discuss it with!

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 367 comments Lori's got the right idea. Part of the fun with this sort of thing is guessing what the other person would enjoy, then seeing if you are right. That's where the review and feedback part of this challenge are going to come in. We have to be willing to share what we get out of the experience, to say if the choice is dead on or not.

This is what I do at work. You'd think it would be easy to pick a book for someone, but that's not always true! It's like being Nancy Drew, conducting an investigation and looking for clues leading to the right book. You don't often get to pick something you like without considering if it fits the other person's ideal.

I've never really had someone pick my books for me, so it will be interesting to be on the other side for a change.

message 26: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Good point, Sarah. I like picking books for friends, and as a former middle school teacher, I considered it part of my job, recommending books to my students, but as you say, there is some investigating involved in the process. It really helps if you have a fair idea of the person's personality and their likes and dislikes.

Since, this is on an online venue, I guess, we can use the person's shelves as a peek into the person's character and come up with our recommendation.

I think this will be fun. Great idea, again, Tricia. Now I'm eager to know what book will be recommended to me.

message 27: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) We can use their shelves and we can also go back and read some of their posts, both here and in the PNR group if applicable. I think this will be a great way to get to know each other better.

message 28: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Ditto on that, Lori!

message 29: by Cheryl (last edited Jan 18, 2009 03:01PM) (new)

Cheryl (cheryllaflammegmailcom) | 86 comments I think this is a great idea.

Yz, I am with you. I also am eager to see what book would be picked for me.

I guess you might consider putting up two books, give the person a choice between the two. That could be interesting as well.
As I am thinking about this you could have one be from the person's TBR pile and the other selection not. That way if they are not able( for whatever reason) to go out and purchase a new book,or go to the library, they can still participate. Just a thought! :)

message 30: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments That's also cool, Cheryl. Now, I can't wait for February and who will pick for me, and who do I get to pick for...LOL

message 31: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendyfraser65) | 772 comments Yz, could you please withdraw my name.

message 32: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments LibraryLass,

Tricia is in charge of this challenge but i'm sure that will not be a problem.

message 33: by Amanda A (new)

Amanda A | 769 comments This sounds like fun! I'd like to participate, so please sign me up.

My TBR shelf is not up to date on here, but I'll work on transferring it over from Shelfari before February.

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments Updated the list, as well as the explanation :) (just added something to the bolded part about how you choose the book.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

i have a lot of books i need to read that i haven't started.. maybe to save money we can use some of them? we can always post what books we have at home so the person who is picking can make sure we have it. or can get it in there area.. i know my book store has issues getting books in if not given long enough... but i do have like 4 to shop between so i can always luck out.. :)...

message 40: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Hi Tricia. I was wondering if you going to announce the pairs soon in case we need to order books or something. I know I frequently have to get a book transferred in from another library.

Thanks!

Glori (divina) | 37 comments Hi!

I am new to the forum. Is it too late to join the challenge?

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments No not too late! I am going to be announcing names this evening so will add you in now :)

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments oops I spelled your name wrong! fixing that now lol

Glori (divina) | 37 comments Don't worry, for some reason the people at the coffee place next to my house keep calling me Lori or Gloria. lol ;-)

message 46: by ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË (last edited Jan 26, 2009 04:10PM) (new)

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments You can post your book here and I will edit the list to reflect the chosen book.

Remember look at the TBR list of your chosen person and try and pick something they dont have on it!

message 47: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (last edited Jan 26, 2009 04:52PM) (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I'm recommending Hell's Belles by Jackie Kessler for Jael. Since most of your books lean more towards urban fantasy, I think you will like this saucy, raunchy book about an ex-succubus on the run from hell, and hiding as a mortal stripper in the Big Apple.

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 367 comments For Amanda, I recommend Touch the Dark by Karen Chance. Your bookshelf seems to have a nice mix of fantasy and historical stories, so I think Chance's world and characters will appeal.

If I looked up the correct library system for where you live, you should have a copy available to borrow.

(For backup selection, or for future reading, I also recommend The Rest Falls Away by Colleen Gleason. It will appeal to your history/chick lit side.)

ÓË¥T°ù¾±³¦¾±²¹ÓË¥ (siddie) | 407 comments Very nice Sarah! To even look up the library system. I hadnt thought of that, that was very cool of you :)

message 50: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1245 comments OK Cheryl - I'm choosing Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton for you. It's the first in her Merry Gentry series with a bit of mystery, suspense, paranormal, romance and sex all wrapped into one book. This is one of my favorite series. If you can't get a hold of this book, then I suggest starting the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich (One for the Money is first).
