Julia | 11782 comments HNR. The science fictional aspects of this novel sound good, the Romance, not so much, Have you read it yet? If yes, what did you think?

HYR The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester ? He was the first -- in 1951-- to write about telepaths in this 175 page novel.

Btw, I wasn't rec'ing Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir above; I didn't care for it.

Shades of Treason was recommended to me, but I have not yet read it. I rarely read any sort of memoir -- most are too serious -- and my personal reading is for fun. So, I didn't even consider Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir as a potential read.

HNR The Demolished Man It doesn't sound like a book which I would enjoy.

HYR Tiny World Terrariums: A Step-by-Step Guide to Easily Contained Life by Michelle Inciarrano Tiny World Terrariums A Step-by-Step Guide to Easily Contained Life by Michelle Inciarrano or another "how to" book on growing plants?

Julia | 11782 comments HNR. I'm really, really good at killing plants, inside and outside; I ignore my yard and plants, mostly.

Two funny, funny memoirs I've read, but wish I'd listened to are Bossypants by Tina Fey Bossypants by Tina Fey and Yes Please by Amy Poehler Yes Please by Amy Poehler . HYR either of them?

Julia | 11782 comments The Handmaid's Tale may be the scariest book I've ever read and I've only read it the one time, decades ago, not wanting to revisit it. I think if you didn't enjoy it, the book was doing its job. A lot of the reviews of Article 5 referenced The Handmaid's Tale.

HYR Hyperion* (Hyperion Cantos, Book 1) by Dan Simmons Hyperion (Hyperion Cantos, #1) by Dan Simmons ?

*It won a Hugo for Best Novel in 1990. The Hyperion Cantos trilogy remains one of my all-time favorite scifi series.

message 630: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments It's maybe been twenty years since I read The Demolished Man, but I remember it as really good. It's the first novel that addresses telepathy, so on the sf tv show "Babylon 5," the governmental organization of telepaths is lead by a character named Alfred Bester. The novel is short and a murder mystery.

HNR Hyperion, which one a whole bucket of awards. I've got The Terror by Dan Simmons, which I've been meaning to read.
