In his post in the First Impressions thread, Arthur mentioned the American woman's "wanting" that extends to the cat. It struck me that so much of what she says and does is about what she "wants," that wanting is an extremely important part of the story, and maybe this is even true of the husband.

So what do you all think about "wanting" (and you to, Arthur, expand on your idea if you would).

Gio (giobannaschlitz) i said it in another thread...but will repeat it here.

i think she doesn't know what she wants, therefore she wants everything she sees. the cat being the next among others. so what happens to the cat once she gets it?

people who want so much are never happy with what they have, which is sad. too many 'have to have's' and not enough 'like to have's' make people miserable. and i think she's miserable. or at least, not happy with her current life.

I think so too. I imagine the cat will be back out under a chair during the next rain, and she'll be off somewhere with George wanting something else.

Gio (giobannaschlitz) exactly. and maybe that's why george is so indifferent towards her. its like he knows what he wants and he's content

I love that contentment of George's and I feel mostly sad for her. Sad that she is not just enjoying what she's got. Cause hanging out in some seaside European town on a rainy day with a cafe downstairs and a loved one and a good book sounds like heaven to me.

Gio (giobannaschlitz) no kidding. in fact, i'd probably be lounging in bed, naked reading some great 'holiday' book. sigh. i could use that right now.
