Actually, 4.5 stars.
Barbara Kingsolver has done her usual splendid job, using the basic plot of Dickens's David Copperfield to portray the personal and social devastation of the Oxycontin abuse epidemic in rural Virginia. Demon Fields's rich, authentic first-person narration carries the reader through a tale of material and emotional poverty, failed social safety nets, self-defeating choices, and personal resilience.

Amor Towles sure knows how to put together a story.
