it was amazing
I'd seen the movie numerous times as a kid when my father watched it on TV, but for years didn't even know it was based on a book. Even once I did find out, it took me years again before I got around to reading it. A pity. I finished it in a matter of a few hours and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. This book should be better than 3 stars, BUT... I had assumed that the books that followed this one in Berry's Oregon trilogy would follow on with the same story. When I picked up the second book and discovered that it was a completely different story, just still set in mid 19th century Oregon, it completely ruined the ending of this one. NOTHING was resolved!
