Can someone explain the phallic symbolism to me please?

Hyped this up way too much in my mind I think. Interesting imagery, a couple of really creepy ones in there, but the storyline was confusing and the vibes were off. I never felt "in it" per se. I still think I would read on though if I could get my hands on the next copy.
