Finding this novel curiously engaging. Cummings adopts a satirical tone that seems at odds with the realities of this prison, and thereby accomplishes something unique: a lightening of the spirit, a wall of imperturbable wit that counters the starkness and horrors of this concentration camp.

(Let it be known that even the French were known to conduct such systematic cruelty to the people it deemed unpatriotic )
