[close] In 1985, when I was twenty-one, I recorded my grandmother Rebecca (n茅e Levy) Baruch Cohen telling stories about her early life as as part of an elite Sephardic Jewish family in Turkey and her subsequent migrations to Spain, Cuba and New York. My grandmother was a vibrant, shape-shifting, endlessly creative person whose life journey brought many challenges. Over the years, she has inspired my work as a novelist in oblique ways, but it wasn鈥檛 until decades after her death in 1991 that I felt ready to turn to her story more directly in my writing. I wrote my novel Kantika as fiction but drew on a rich mix of oral history, family photographs and research. Here, you'll find a five minute video I made about the inspiration for Kantika and my research process. It includes snippets in my grandmother's own voice from those long ago interviews.
