I light a candle, get a large cup of coffee (a cliche, I know... but it works!) and I begin. I don't wait for inspiration to strike or I'd be waiting all day. Writing is a job like anything else and you wouldn't wait for inspiration in any other office job (you'd probably get fired if you tried it!) Most of the time it's about knuckling down. However, I'll add that having as few distractions as possible is really helpful. So sometimes it's a case of putting the phone out of reach, pulling the curtains, wearing headphones - whatever it takes!

I'm busy brainstorming ideas for my follow up to GOOD HUSBANDS. It won't be a sequel but will also be a suspenseful read, looking at the issues that matter to women.

Read as much as you can get your hands on! Not just current books, but all sorts from as many different voices as you can manage. It'll help your own voice emerge. And secondly: just write. Anything! A journal, emails, poems, random thoughts. You don't have to tackle a full novel right away if it's overwhelming. Just start by playing with words, developing your ideas. When you then begin to write in earnest, you'll have a stronger idea of who you are as a writer and about what matters to you.

The idea was sparked by a heated conversation about #MeToo that took place one night at the local pub during the trial of Harvey Weinstein. I was shocked to hear very strong opinions from other women criticising those who had made the allegations against Weinstein. This set me thinking about how women really feel deep down about allegations of sexual abuse and then: what would they do if it was much closer to home? And so the idea for GOOD HUSBANDS was born!
