I removed her shoes and socks and, kneeling on the floor, with tears in her eyes and mine, I washed her feet. As I did, I said, “Jessica, I’m doing this because I want you to know that your father will do whatever it takes—whatever it takes—to make sure that we get through this. I can’t make you okay. That’s God’s responsibility, not mine. But I will serve you however you need me to to make that happen.”
