Publishers Weekly reviews MIRO

After a long, nerve-racking wait, I was thrilled to find a fantastic MIRO review in the October 9th issue of Publishers Weekly. Having numbed myself in preparation to read said review, I find a side-effect in that it has taken me a few weeks to absorb the news and appropriately celebrate this important occasion. So here I am, finally shrugging off my stupor. The full review follows, originally posted on ."Nasr’s impressive debut, set in an unnamed country, follows five...

23 reasons to celebrate

This week, to celebrate World Peace & Harmony Day (I made that up), MIRO will be enrolled in a Kindle Countdown Deal. Actually, I’m celebrating 23 fantastic Amazon reviews, the readers and authors who took the time to share their feedback, and an educational and quite thrilling nine months as a published novelist. I am not celebrating my skills as a brilliant self-marketer: that badge will stay in the drawer for now.Special thanks to the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ community that I wish I had discovered earlie...

MIRO advances to quarter-finals of BookLife Prize

The BookLife Prize for Fiction celebrates the best in indie publishing. Yes, the cash prize for the grand finalist is a nice draw, but there’s really nothing that beats having your work pass before the eyes of a respected editor or best-selling author—one of the perks of making the finals.Today, MIRO progresses to the quarter-finals, vying with 13 fantastic stories in the General Fiction category. Check them out at, and take a moment to appreciate the labours of these hard-working aut...

MIRO scores in the BookLife Prize For Fiction

Entering into competition is one of the rites of passage of every debut author. For my novel, MIRO, the BookLife Prize For Fiction (an offshoot of Publishers Weekly) was the second trial by fire following a review by a distinguished reader. Either I could squirrel myself away and make believe that I had no interest in comparisons, or I could allow my labour of nine long years to be judged among my indie peers. To say I breathed a sigh of relief over the initial critique is an understatement.M...

Q&A: What inspired MIRO?

As a follow-up to his wonderful, Luke Sherwood interviewed me about the inspiration behind my debut novel, its setting and its characters. Some serious soul-searching followed, and I credit the candour of my answers to his very thoughtful questions. The Q&A portion of the article is republished here with his kind permission. Read the original interview at, dated September 10th 2016.Q&A with A.E. Nasr, author of "Miro"by Luke SherwoodBasso Profundo: It seems obvious you...

MIRO releases in paperback

There’s nothing like unboxing your first batch of proofs. Especially when you consider it’s the climactic moment after a long, difficult period ruled by one overriding impulse: to tear it all up and set it on fire. (Which leads me to wonder whether this ‘burning desire has anything to do with fire playing such a huge role in MIRO’s plot, but that’s a rumination for another day.)It’s an urge you’ve resisted from the beginning. At the outset of every chapter, and at the conclusion of every rev...

MIRO: published at last

I like to say that my debut novel, MIRO, is a nine-year labour of love. What I really mean is that it was a nine-year labour of love, hate, discovery, angst and crippling doubt.I also like to say that MIRO is an ode to all the things that make us brave when we have little reason to be. In comparison to the struggles I explore in my book, getting published seems so small a thing, but today I needed a lot of that bravery to click the ‘Publish button, freeing MIRO onto Amazon’s pages worldwide....
