i’m just trying
to look through
my headache
clenching my jaw
and trying to act tough
wondering
if everyone else
finds everyday life

fought in WWII

one saw Europe from inside
a Sherman tank

the other hit France
at the end of a silk
parachute

both were wounded
both survived

the tank driver died
after a lifetime
of Pall malls, Chesterfields, and Camels

came home from store
found old crippled dog of mine
thrashing about in a panic
up to his shoulders
in the backyard pond
I dropped the groceries
ran outside
stripped off my jacket
and plunged into the water
to haul him out

all of my novels
were written under
the influence of marijuana.
this is not an addiction,
this is a working method.

ninja cell warriors

my friend and fellow poet
has gotten some notoriety of late
because she pissed off a bunch of catty women.
i think it would be
scary to be on the receiving end of that kind of vitriol
people just go crazy on the internet�
in prison we called it
ninja cell warrior�

that is
you talk massive shit
when you are safely locked in your cage,
but when the door opens,
you turn into a pussy.

on the internet,
everyone is safely locked in their cell
so they talk as much shit as they want.
personally, i always tell fuckheads
that if they want a piece of me
they’d better come get it in person.

i also have a personal motto
that has served me well:
i don’t respond to criticism,
only subpoenas.
