It鈥檚 several things wrapped up in one work, it addresses wildly varied themes, and it almost gleefully defies the formulaic shape that novel-length fiction all too often seems to take in 2024. Calling it a book that doesn鈥檛 appeal to casual readers would do it a disservice, but it emphatically is one that all but demands its readers engage critically with it in order to fully appreciate everything it has to offer.

The plot of the book is partly a political drama. Queen Daelyn sends Shea, a disgraced political official and protagonist of our story, off to the border city of Owenbeg to oversee the construction of a massive tower. The tower is a military installation meant to check the neighboring kingdom鈥檚 aggression, but as is sometimes the case when a state embarks on a massive military industrial project, the construction is behind schedule and over budget. So it falls to Shea to manage the local politicians, a community of immigrants (or perhaps more accurately, refugees), the complicated prodigy chief engineer, and the exotic and deadly foreign technology underpinning the construction in order to put the project in order.

Sort of. Setting the stage like this might be accurate, but it鈥檚 not very precise.

Because woven into the story is a wonderful non-linearity and surreality. Interior conflicts borne of Shea鈥檚 personal tragedies long past float to the surface via memories and flashbacks. Following the lines of the past as they intertwine with Shea鈥檚 narrow goals at the tower slowly but surely come together into a tapestry that exposes that the politics aren鈥檛 what they seem, the tower isn鈥檛 what it seems, the immigrants aren鈥檛 what they seem, and the world itself is also not what it seems.

Indulging for a moment in the 鈥渉ow a story gets structured鈥� nerdery that I bring to reading from doing my own writing, and it鈥檚 obvious that SLEEPING WORLDS is not beholden to the story structures that are most common in popular fiction. Google 鈥淗ollywood Formula鈥� and 鈥淲edding Crashers鈥� or something like that and you鈥檒l find a roadmap for structuring a story. So too with things like 鈥�3-Act鈥� or 鈥�7-Point鈥� structure. SLEEPING WORLDS is none of those things. Barsukov leaned into writing a work that is emphatically, gleefully, its own strange is beautiful thing.

Similarly, in the world of genre fiction post Brandon Sanderson, there is almost a baseline expectation that secondary worlds and the magic systems that power them will be fully set forth and explained as though the reader had a reference guide to how the world was engineered. SLEEPING WORLDS, on the other hand, is a callback to a different era or at least a different style of storytelling. A style where things are weird and readers are asked to suspend their disbelief without doing the fantasy equivalent of stoichiometry calculations. There are airship things (skyrafts). There are antigravity devices that sometimes kill people. How about spiders that can tell when you鈥檙e lying? How do they鈥� stop鈥� just roll with it.

I think some readers will bounce off of this story precisely because SLEEPING WORLDS is different. It is not a book written to chase a trend on instantsnaptoks. If you go into it expecting the equivalent of a popcorn action film, you might bounce off of it too. But if you go into it ready to revel in its strangeness and engage with the complicated themes that it explores, themes as varied as national/cultural identity, refugees and their place within societies, the dangers of technology, geopolitical game theory/windows of opportunity, and even observational reality theory (!), then you鈥檒l be better for having read it.

As is his wont, he interrogates systems, social, economic, and in this case, ecological, in ways that betray just how interested he is in those subject in the real world. This is not a bog-standard real world analogue fantasy realm, this is something far more wild and far more interesting, and by building the world that he has built (and the characters he populated it with), he is able to examine a series of complicated themes that resonate in the world beyond the page.

The world is one of empire, but empire under constant threat. Not threat by invasion by foreigners, or orcs, but by being overrun by massive eldritch kaiju鈥攍eviathans. Only the seawalls, and the complicated bureaucracy of the empire hold the leviathans at bay, and only the vagaries of that bureaucracy keep the empire itself running. The empire is one of bizarre biological adaptations, mutations, and what I will refer to as plant-based-nonsense. Mad scientists modify people using strange mutagenic potions to grant enhanced strength, speed, memory, and far far more.

Our protagonist is one of those modified humans, a man with a perfect memory who is employed as the right hand man鈥攁nd literal eyes鈥攐f a Holmesian style mad genius investigator (though, to hear the author tell it the relationship is less Watson and Holmes, and more Starling and Lector). While his principal remains blindfolded and unwilling to leave her house, he embarks on an investigation into a series of murders that threaten to bring the seawalls down and topple the empire itself.

Along the way though, we walk through the halls of power and are confronted with an all too familiar, and all too discomforting, tension between short and long term incentives. Power, after all, is comfortable with power, and power tends to do what it can to both accrete and protect itself鈥� even at the expense of itself in the long term. In these moments the window into the world of THE TAINTED CUP becomes a lens on our own world, an incisive critique of the halls of power and the rationalizations that those inside the halls of power use to justify their position (and what it costs to maintain that position). ...more

I don鈥檛 think this is quite true. I think when it鈥檚 done well it鈥檚 less a window to the future, and more a mirror that reflects the present. In GENERATION SHIP, Michael Mammay polishes a mirror and calls it a window. He shows us a generation ship built to colonize a planet orbiting a distant star (hardly a 2023 type of challenge), but despite appearing at first blush to be a window, it鈥檚 a mirror, and we鈥檙e looking at ourselves the entire time.

GENERATION SHIP gives us what鈥檚 on the label. It鈥檚 a novel about the people aboard a generation ship on the verge of arriving at its extrasolar destination. The fabric of the society that has bound this community together over the 200ish years in transit is fraying because鈥� well鈥� how *couldn鈥檛* it? Several generations had lived and died all working toward the goal of colonizing a planet, and now this particular generation gets the chance to do so? What if you were the last person too old to see what you had come so far to see? What if you were the person in charge of keeping a delicate peace aboard a ship that absolutely requires it? What if you were an ambitious genius stuck, by virtue of the rules and regulations governing the ship, in a role that you know squanders your potential? What if you were in charge, and everyone鈥檚 lives hang on your decisions?

These concerns are relatable, but where the window silvers over and is fully replaced by the mirror is in the, honestly, infuriatingly believable petty bullshit. I found myself wanting to reach through the pages and grab characters by the throat and scream 鈥渄o you not see how your narrow concerns should be subordinate to the greater project?鈥� How do all of these people prioritize their narrow political nonsense over the landing of a lifeboat of humanity on a habitable planet? Do they not see how there are thousands and thousands of lives at stake? It鈥檚 almost unbelievable, when faced with a goal so lofty that people would be so petty, so political, and so callous to their fellow humans.

Surely if we were faced with a challenge with so dire of stakes, and asked to sacrifice so very little to advance the survival of thousands and thousands of people we share a society with, we would. Wouldn鈥檛 we?

Oh.

Nevermind.

Like I said, science fiction, when done well, is a mirror. And sometimes what we find in the mirror isn鈥檛 the most flattering.

At the end of the day, GENERATION SHIP is one of those reads that is punchy, it pulls you forward, it has satisfying characters arcs and the players grow and struggle and achieve and fail. It isn鈥檛 a ra-ra cheer a tidy conclusion type of book, because ultimately it鈥檚 telling the story of how messy human nature is, and how our dedication to societal ends is vulnerable to individual priorities. And doing that well doesn鈥檛 exactly lend itself to a Hollywood ending. The journey, however, is fantastic, as at the end of the day it was one of my favorite reads in recent memory. ...more

It interrogates themes of gender roles, the nature of what it is like to born different in some way, and about the interplay between forces that are revolutionary and poorly understood dueling for supremacy in a world desperate to apply some manner of order to events that appear chaotic and uncontrollable.

Our protagonist, Sarah, is a young widowed apprentice midwife whose husband drowned under mysterious circumstances. Furthermore, she has a connection to these uncanny births鈥搒he was born with a tail鈥� a tail that was amputated. Therefore, we see this world through the eyes of someone who can pass as an unaffected human, and who sees those born affected not as monsters but as something else.

Sarah, by strange twists of fate, finds herself working with a pregnant gentlelady with a husband who is a man of means and of reason and science (such as it was at the time). And her connection to this pregnancy as well as her own uncanny nature places her squarely at the heart of a struggle between science and reason and an embrace of the primal weird of the uncanny.

The book is a compelling read, and pulls the reader forward, layering in a deepening mystery at the heart of why these births are happening with every chapter, and more importantly, tying every development to the conflict at Sarah鈥檚 heart (navigating her place in a world designed to exclude people like her (people like her in many more ways than one)). And it leads us to an epic climax where the fate of the world lay in the balance.

If anything, it is the efficiency with which the story is told that may be my only 鈥渃riticism.鈥� We move from discovering the conflict, to discerning what it is that makes Sarah Sarah, to turning the page and finding ourselves in the climax so quickly, I found myself wanting more time spent meandering these paths, ruminating on not only what those paths meant for the world of A SEASON FOR MONSTROUS CONCEPTIONS and its characters, but more importantly what they mean for the real world, and the way I see that world.

Because (and here鈥檚 where we pay off that very first parenthetical) how does one reckon with the central conceit at the heart of this story? As a baseline, it鈥檚 clear that to the people of London in this book, they do not want uncanny children. In their eyes, these uncanny children are defective鈥搃f they even survive. They鈥檙e cast out. They鈥檙e鈥� other. One need not be terribly introspective to see the metaphor applied to our society. How does our society view children born鈥� different? How should we? How do I?

There鈥檚 a peculiar type of fear to parenthood where you want the best for your child鈥揾ow could you not鈥揳nd you hope nothing goes 鈥渨rong.鈥� What if my child were born unhealthy? Or with some genetic abnormality? So many birth announcements include some variant of the phrase 鈥渂oth baby and mother are healthy鈥� and no doubt that phrase addresses this looming fear that is everpresent and almost entirely out of anyone鈥檚 hands but chance. But is it ethical to desire my child not be born with a genetic abnormality? Would I be unethical to hope my child be born striking some kind of genetic lottery鈥搊r at least avoid rolling genetic snakeyes?

And it鈥檚 the latter question that cuts to the heart of how Sarah and the increased incidence of uncanny births fits into this analysis and makes the closing description an 鈥渋ncreased incidence鈥� rather than an 鈥渆pidemic.鈥� Clearly, Sarah thrives regardless of her Uncanny nature. Clearly one can look around the the real world and see countless children and adults dealt hands not of their choosing and who are thriving nonetheless. And yet, still that question lingers: How would I react faced with similar circumstances?

It鈥檚 not an easy subject matter, and it鈥檚 certainly not something resolvable in a few hundred word book review. But, to my perspective the finest stories are the ones that expose conflicts within the reader and demand the reader look at hard places within themselves. Those, ultimately, are the stories we remember.

On one hand, this is a book that lends itself to the current-marketing-zeitgeist of making funny faces while moving a book across a phone screen for thirty seconds while listing tropes and emojis, but that would do it a terrible disservice.

Essiya鈥搕he sole surviving heir to the royal family of Jasad鈥揻led from the massacre that accompanied the destruction of her kingdom. She took the name Sylvia and found an existence in anonymity on the margins of society. By virtue of her bloodline as a Jasadi, she can use magic. At least, she ought to be able to use magic, except mystical handcuffs restrict her from doing so. This restriction, however, is convenient, because just being a Jasadi鈥搕o say nothing of actually using magic鈥搃s enough to warrant a death sentence at the hands of the kingdom of Nizahl which was busy finishing the job it started when it massacred her family and destroyed her kingdom.

When she found herself suspected of being a Jasadi by none other than the heir of Nizahl it鈥檚 only the intervention of a mixture of fate, bad luck, and her concern for another young orphan that combined to force the Nizahl heir to name her as his champion in an annual contest waged between the royal houses. From there she is forced to work with the scion of her world鈥檚 destruction as she learns more about her magic, her past, and discovers there鈥檚 far more to everything than she realized.

You can see all of tikstantgramable details lurking beneath the surface. A MAGIC TOURNAMENT! AN ORPHAN WITH A MAGIC SECRET! A MYSTERIOUS PAST! CONSPIRACIES AND SCHEMES! ENEMIES TO鈥� LOVERS?! But reducing the book to those tropes might drive engagement on social media platforms I do not participate in, but it really avoids doing anything to shed light on the soul of the book. THE JASAD HEIR is about a survivor鈥檚 guilt, their shame, their trauma, their journey to liberate themselves of the harms the world perpetuated upon them. It鈥檚 about loyalty and duty and how those are often chosen for us, not by us. It鈥檚 about learning to love in spite of everything conspiring to encourage hate. And that鈥檚 all a bit more than a list of tropes鈥� no?

I struggled with how to write this review in part because I had a nagging sense while reading it that I was missing something. The world that Sylvia exists within was hard to sort out in my mind. Perhaps this is because the ARC I read did not have a map. But I was getting the sense that people traveled among the kingdoms too quickly, or that their environment changed too much, or鈥� something I couldn鈥檛 quite put my finger on. Action sequences seemed fuzzy around the edges. Then a action scene involved a character being stabbed in the chest only to carry on a conversation, and I started to grow more skeptical. It was only when another huge set piece involving massive, almost godlike, magic reforging the very landscape it was being fought on that I had a realization:

THE JASAD HEIR does not care about that tight hyper-reality. It is not that book. Just like STAR WARS is not hard sf and doesn鈥檛 pretend to be as it celebrates the fantastic elements it incorporates, THE JASAD HEIR revels in being a fantasy. And that realization unlocked the whole experience. Not to cast any aspersions on authors who go into exhaustive details in the attempt to achieve a near-facsimile of reality in their fiction, but not all stories benefit from that.
